<strong>Aid</strong> To The <strong>Church</strong> <strong>in</strong> Need<br />

Pilgrimage <strong>to</strong><br />

Lebanon<br />

Spiritual Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Canon Chris<strong>to</strong>pher Tuckwell<br />

3 rd - 11 th June 2013

This pilgrimage, <strong>to</strong> Lebanon, will be <strong>in</strong> prayerful solidarity with suffer<strong>in</strong>g Christians <strong>the</strong>re<br />

<strong>and</strong> throughout <strong>the</strong> Middle East. Neville Kyrke-Smith, <strong>the</strong> charity’s UK direc<strong>to</strong>r, reflects on<br />

what he encountered <strong>in</strong> this most ancient of Biblical l<strong>and</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g a recent fact-f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g trip.<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g bridges of hope: Amid <strong>the</strong> turmoil <strong>and</strong> tension of <strong>the</strong> Arab Spr<strong>in</strong>g, Christians are<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g bridges of peace <strong>and</strong> cooperation <strong>in</strong> Lebanon <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East.<br />

The <strong>Church</strong> <strong>in</strong> Lebanon faces some immense challenges – implor<strong>in</strong>g us <strong>to</strong> respond <strong>in</strong> faith<br />

<strong>and</strong> charity. Christian leaders are bridge-builders, engaged <strong>in</strong> dialogue as <strong>the</strong>y strive <strong>to</strong><br />

br<strong>in</strong>g about peace. Our cont<strong>in</strong>ued help is vital <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, as <strong>the</strong>y rely on our prayers <strong>and</strong><br />

compassion.<br />

“We are bridge-builders with o<strong>the</strong>r faiths,” Melkite Archbishop Elie Haddad of Saida (Sidon)<br />

<strong>to</strong>ld me when I visited Lebanon <strong>in</strong> June 2012.<br />

Archbishop Haddad’s Maronite counterpart, Bishop Elias Nassar, agreed, say<strong>in</strong>g: “The<br />

Christian presence is so important here as a bridge-builder – <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r communities like<br />

<strong>to</strong> deal with Christians.” Urg<strong>in</strong>g ACN <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue its support for dialogue projects <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Middle East, Bishop Nassar said:<br />

“Please enable us <strong>to</strong> witness <strong>to</strong> God <strong>and</strong> show Jesus <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> people.”<br />

“We follow our Lord’s comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> give testimony of our faith. Thank you!<br />

We pray for you!”<br />

The faith of Christians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East – <strong>in</strong> our Biblical homel<strong>and</strong> – <strong>in</strong>spires us. Please<br />

jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>Aid</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong> <strong>in</strong> Need on this special pilgrimage <strong>to</strong> Lebanon, as <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r we try <strong>to</strong><br />

susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith of our bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> sisters <strong>in</strong> Christ.<br />
