CAVITATION<br />

The cavitation diagram shows three operating zones of the pressure reducing valve<br />

plotted against the upstream and downstream pressures, namely :<br />

Zone C : normal duty, no cavitation<br />

Zone B : medium duty, risk of cavitation<br />

Zone A : heavy duty, the pressure reducing valve shows cavitation.<br />

Continuous operation in the red cavitation zone could cause rapid damage of the<br />

internal parts.<br />

SIZING<br />

Example 1 (cavitation)<br />

Pressure reducing valve with : Inlet pressure P1 = 14 bar- Outlet pressure P2 = 3 bar.<br />

From the cavitation diagram it can be seen that the pressure reducing valve is<br />

constantly working in the red zone. To avoid rapid deterioration, two pressure<br />

reducing valves could be used, one connected upstream to the other.<br />

Upstream pressure reducing valve: pressure front from 14 to 6 bar (green zone).<br />

Downstream pressure reducing valve: pressure front from 6 to 3 bar (green zone).<br />

PRV115<br />

Pilot operated pressure reducing valve designed to reduce a higher upstream pressure to a<br />

constant lower downstream pressure. This very accurate valve is deisgned to operate with a<br />

minimum of maintenance. The only moving parts in the valve are the diaphragm and the stem<br />

assembly, which are guided by an exchangeable bearing in the cover and the valve seat. The<br />

<strong>Watts</strong> PRV115 is easy to install and adjust.<br />

AUTOMATIC CONTROL VALVES<br />

EU100 RANGE<br />

Automatic self-acting control valves designed <strong>for</strong> regulating water flow in water pipelines, such<br />

as: Waterworks, irrigation, fire-fighting, process plants, etc.<br />

The main functions per<strong>for</strong>med by the valve (also valve combinations) are as follows:<br />

- Shut-off - check - reduction, stabilization of the pressure - relief, overpressure<br />

- pressure support - level control - flow control.<br />

The more advanced models are equipped with a central control unit (EU900), of AISI 303<br />

stainless steel construction, which allows the regulating action to be per<strong>for</strong>med as required by<br />

setting the flow opening and closing speeds as well as the response gradient to the deviations.<br />

The pilot devices serve <strong>for</strong> determining the type of function and the set-point of the parameter<br />

under control. All valves are provided with visual indication of the valve plug stem position.<br />

OPERATING PRINCIPLES<br />

The self-acting valves of Series EU100 consist of a main two-way<br />

body of globe type Fig 1, whose flow section is controlled by a<br />

shaped plug actuated by the energy supplied by the flow under<br />

control through a diaphragm inserted between the body and cover to<br />

<strong>for</strong>m the operating chamber. When a small quantity of the fluid flows<br />

through the water control circuit, this circuit places the following ports<br />

in communication with each other :<br />

- upstream port with pressure generally higher<br />

- downstream port with pressure generally lower<br />

- port of the operating chamber with regulated intermediate pressure.<br />

An adjustable throttle is installed at the outlet of the upstream port,<br />

and be<strong>for</strong>e communication with the operating chamber. The pilot<br />

device is installed at the inlet of the downstream port. When the pilot<br />

device is fully open Fig 2 it allows direct discharge of the operating<br />

fluid coming from the upstream port; this causes a drop in pressure<br />

due to the throttling and determines a low level of pressure in the<br />

operating chamber and discharge of the latter.<br />

The valve plug is raised to full opening position, thrust by the fluid<br />

under control. The fully closed pilot device Fig 3 causes the same<br />

high pressure present on upstream side to be present in the<br />

operating chamber (throttling with zero flow does not cause drops)<br />

and determines the fluid under control to be shut-off.<br />

When the pilot device is in intermediate position Fig 4 it allows partial<br />

discharge of the operating fluid coming from the upstream port; this<br />

produces a proportional drop in pressure due to the throttling and<br />

determines, in the operating chamber, an intermediate level of<br />

pressure and volume. Hence the valve plug modulates the lifting of<br />

the valve plug (in opening or in closing) thus ensuring that the<br />

required levels of flow or pressure are reached.<br />

EU114 RATE OF FLOW CONTROL VALVE<br />

Self-acting diaphragm valve serving to control the flow rate passing the valve at a<br />

constant and settable value: normally the maximum acceptable drawing off value is held. The<br />

flow rate is monitored continuously through a calibrated flange located upstream of the valve,<br />

whose piezometric sockets are connected to the special pilot device which also allows<br />

setting with a differential pressure gauge. Version with needle valves. Obviously the<br />

available flow rate range (see table below) depends on the ND and calibrated<br />

flange; there<strong>for</strong>e it should be stated when ordering.<br />

the adjustment range chosen. The piezometric pilot device is fastened to the main valve<br />

the tank while the main valve it is at bottom of the tank. The float operating rod allows<br />
