Vocational Training Educational Center (VTEC)<br />

In order to provide accessible and affordable training, <strong>IRM</strong><br />

has three major vocational centers. One is in Rawalpindi<br />

working in collaboration with Behbud Pakistan since 2002,<br />

while one each in Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot, both started<br />

after the earthquake with the former in collaboration with<br />

ILO, aiming to assist communities rebuild their lives. VTEC<br />

In order to respond to the deficiencies in public and private<br />

sector schools, <strong>IRM</strong> established this resource center in 2005<br />

based at <strong>IRM</strong> in Islamabad. It is run by skilled trainers and<br />

benefits from the advice <strong>of</strong> international education experts.<br />

its head <strong>of</strong>fice and nine regional <strong>of</strong>fices, annually<br />

Atrains over 30,000 men and women both at the national as<br />

well as international levels in numerous vocational and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills. Our portfolio <strong>of</strong> over 300 types <strong>of</strong> training<br />

courses is developed after thorough research and refined<br />

through the constant input <strong>of</strong> experts, to meet the evolving<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> communities and clients. Over the last 15 years<br />

NRSP-<strong>IRM</strong> has catered to the training needs <strong>of</strong> NRSP, other<br />

<strong>Rural</strong> Support Programmes (RSPs), public and private sector<br />

organisations, NGOs and INGOs in Pakistan, Central Asia<br />

and the SAARC countries.<br />

The Staff Training Programme is devoted to improving the<br />

specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes <strong>of</strong> development<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who are recognized for their high<br />

performance, cultural sensitivities and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

competencies.<br />

Social Organisation Training<br />

NRSP, like the other ten RSPs, believes in “harnessing the<br />

people's potential” to ensure development which is<br />

equitable and sustainable. The institute therefore, informs<br />

and engages community members to recognize<br />

the benefits <strong>of</strong> forming Community<br />

Organisations (COs), so as to harness<br />

existing resources on a self-help<br />

basis for sustainable economic<br />

transformation in their lives. <strong>IRM</strong><br />

has so far developed a wide range<br />

<strong>of</strong> training programmes in social<br />

organisation, that include<br />

programme packages for gender<br />

and development, skill<br />

enhancement <strong>of</strong> CO members and<br />

building community skills in<br />

monitoring and evaluating development<br />

interventions.


<strong>Management</strong> Training Programme<br />

Courses in this programme enhance the<br />

training skills <strong>of</strong> development<br />

practitioners to support community<br />

development programmes adapted<br />

to meet community requirements.<br />

With almost 100 different types <strong>of</strong><br />

training packages, <strong>IRM</strong> trains the<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> RSPs and other NGOs to<br />

become trainers who motivate<br />

communities through social<br />

mobilization.<br />

The “Orientation Training Workshop” is an intensive 15-day<br />

course along with a 3-day refresher training with rigorous<br />

field attachments. Designed for NRSP Interns, it is<br />

recognized by other development organisations as a reliable<br />

way <strong>of</strong> creating in-depth understanding <strong>of</strong> practical and<br />

theoretical issues in development.<br />

Micro Finance Programme<br />

If community members save, they are more likely to become<br />

self-reliant, therefore, COs are encouraged<br />

to open and contribute regularly to a<br />

savings accounts. This <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

emergency relief to community<br />

members who are in dire need; in<br />

addition to that it can also be<br />

invested for individual or<br />

community-based enterprise and<br />

infrastructure development. The<br />

institute <strong>of</strong>fers scores <strong>of</strong> Micro<br />

Finance training packages and also<br />

facilitates linkages between<br />

communities and Micro Finance services.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Programme<br />

The Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Program with support from<br />

<strong>Rural</strong> Support Programmes Network (RSPN), an umbrella<br />

forum <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Rural</strong> Support Programmes in Pakistan, aims to<br />

enhance pr<strong>of</strong>essional competencies <strong>of</strong> senior and mid level<br />

managers <strong>of</strong> the RSPs by developing a need based curricula<br />

for training packages that provide academic, technical and<br />

managerial up-gradation <strong>of</strong> skills. A year-long Women's<br />

Leadership Programme that will supplement the managerial<br />

capabilities <strong>of</strong> women employees <strong>of</strong> RSP as well as other civil<br />

society organisations is also an integral component <strong>of</strong> the<br />

PDP programme.<br />

The Community Training Programme strengthens the<br />

process <strong>of</strong> social mobilization by building CO members'<br />

management capacities to break the vicious cycle <strong>of</strong> poverty<br />

by training rural men and women in acquiring marketable<br />

skills.<br />

Community <strong>Management</strong> Training Programme<br />

Focused on enhancing the management and leadership skills<br />

<strong>of</strong> community activists and leaders, this<br />

section equips them with the skills <strong>of</strong><br />

financial management, book-keeping,<br />

participatory planning, monitoring<br />

and identification <strong>of</strong> community<br />

needs for enterprise development.<br />

Training courses include<br />

Community <strong>Management</strong> Skills,<br />

Community Activist Action Planning<br />

and Leadership <strong>Management</strong> Skills<br />

Training programmes.<br />

Natural Resource <strong>Management</strong> Training<br />

Environmental conservation is a cross cutting theme in our<br />

training <strong>of</strong> community members about sustainable natural<br />

resource management. <strong>IRM</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers over 35 types <strong>of</strong> training<br />

programmes for all aspects <strong>of</strong> crop management, livestock<br />

and fisheries management, social forestry and beekeeping.<br />

We train master trainers and community members in<br />

innovative resource management, focusing on incomegeneration,<br />

environmental conservation and sustainable<br />

land-based livelihoods.<br />

Social Sector Training<br />

Focusing on education, health and<br />

sanitation, this section trains<br />

teachers from government and<br />

community based schools in 'childfriendly'<br />

pedagogy. Based on the<br />

precepts <strong>of</strong> social mobilization, the<br />

programme emphasizes<br />

strengthening community-based<br />

school management and monitoring the<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> education.<br />

Health-sector training focuses on building the skills and<br />

capacities <strong>of</strong> paramedics who address issues in the service<br />

delivery <strong>of</strong> primary and reproductive health care and health<br />

awareness. <strong>IRM</strong>'s training courses teach how to access safe<br />

drinking water and sanitation for healthy environment.<br />

These trainings have enabled hundreds <strong>of</strong> communities to<br />

maintain their own supply <strong>of</strong> clean water and to reap the<br />

economic and health benefits that result.<br />

Vocational Training<br />

With almost 100 kinds <strong>of</strong> vocational and<br />

technical trades, <strong>IRM</strong> provides<br />

innovative and need-based capacity<br />

building facility for rural men and<br />

women. The courses enable them<br />

to gain access to sustained<br />

employment, better wages, and<br />

business opportunities that<br />

maximize their pr<strong>of</strong>its. Women's<br />

skills enhancement is a special feature<br />

<strong>of</strong> vocational training with many<br />

vocational fields dedicated entirely to women.<br />

There is a special allowance for people with disabilities to<br />

take up skills that mainstream them into normal pursuits <strong>of</strong><br />

life.<br />

Academics Programme - The Future<br />

<strong>IRM</strong>'s Academics programme will <strong>of</strong>fer a unique<br />

combination <strong>of</strong> theoretical and applied research on multiple<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> rural development and poverty alleviation. With<br />

an aim to institutionalize field based learning into an<br />

academic purview, this programme will<br />

become the foundation for the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Poverty Studies. The current Post<br />

Graduate Programme <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

Diploma in 'Human Resource<br />

<strong>Management</strong>' and 'NGO<br />

Leadership and <strong>Management</strong>' and a<br />

Diploma in English Language<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency. Additional Diplomas in<br />

Social Development, Micro Finance,<br />

Monitoring and Evaluation and Gender<br />

and Development are planned.<br />

Centers <strong>of</strong> <strong>IRM</strong><br />

As the scope <strong>of</strong> <strong>IRM</strong>'s work expands, centers have been<br />

established to maintain the task <strong>of</strong> support and resource<br />

development.<br />

Akhter Hameed Khan Resource Center (AHKRC)<br />

The Resource Center, established in 2000, is<br />

named after the pioneer <strong>of</strong> social<br />

mobilization and participatory<br />

development in Pakistan and South<br />

Asia. Akhter Hameed Khan was the<br />

founder <strong>of</strong> the "Orangi Pilot<br />

Project" in Pakistan and the<br />

Comilla Project in Bangladesh.<br />

His outstanding contributions also<br />

include Daudzai Integrated <strong>Rural</strong><br />

Development Programme in<br />

N.W.F.P and Aga Khan <strong>Rural</strong> Support<br />

Programme.<br />

With RSPN's support, AHKRC functions as a unique and<br />

dynamic hub <strong>of</strong> development information from Pakistan,<br />

South Asia and other regions <strong>of</strong> the world. Our services<br />
