RECREATION 

SCHOLARSHIPS 

The Salina Parks & Recreation Department 

is committed to providing quality recreation 

opportunities to all residents regardless 

of their economic condition. Persons 

requesting assistance must fill out the 

application form and have it approved 

before signing up for programs. Persons 

receiving assistance are eligible for the 

approved allocation once per calendar year. 

Requests may be renewed any time after 

January 1. 

R E F U N D S 

For persons wishing to cancel their 

registration for any activity sponsored by 

our department, a full refund will be issued 

up to and including the first session of a 

class or program. Refund requests must be 

received by our office no later than the first 

week (or day) of the program. After the 

first session and up until the midway point 

of the program, persons who wish to cancel 

and seek a refund would only be eligible 

for a 50% refund. Once again, the refund 

requests must be received by our office no 

later than the midway point of the program. 

Persons wishing to cancel and request a 

refund after the midway point of a program 

are not eligible for a refund. 

NOTE: This refund policy does not apply to 

trips and tours, a separate policy is in place 

for our travel program.

Athletic Mission Statement 

Salina Parks & Recreation Athletic programs are 

dedicated to providing an outlet for the citizens 

of Salina to participate and be involved in an 

atmosphere that is a safe, fun, and positive 

experience. 

We strive to give adult participants as many 

opportunities as possible to compete, recreate, 

and socialize, while at the same time promoting 

fair play and good sportsmanship. All adult 

sports programs are intended to create an even 

level of play for all people to participate in all 

leagues. 

All youth teams and leagues are developed with 

the intent to provide the kids with fundamental 

motor skills, basic rules, and the true 

understanding of teamwork through sports; 

while at the same time stressing sportsmanship 

and respect. Providing an equal opportunity 

for all participants to ensure healthy minds 

and bodies through physical activity is also an 

important goal.

Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship 

Initiative (SAYSI) 

Mission Statement 

The Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship Initiative 

(SAYSI) has been organized to promote 

comprehensive sportsmanship programs for all 

youth sports in the community. In conjunction 

with local youth sports providers, continuing 

education will be provided for parents, coaches, 

officials, and all youth participants. Coaches, 

parents, and teams will be recognized and 

rewarded for fostering good sportsmanship at 

all age levels. The overall objective of SAYSI is 

to show how important sportsmanship is at the 

youth sports level and to make it contagious 

enough to have a positive impact on all 

community activities.

Join the Salina Table Tennis Club for weekly play, 

every Monday from 6:30-9:30 pm, at Sunset

G YMNASTICS 

The Parks & Recreation Department continues to offer a comprehensive gymnastics 

program to guide children in their development of gymnastics skills, as well as self esteem, 

independence, and character building while having a fun and unique experience in a positive 

atmosphere. Class limits are 8 per class and there must be a minimum of 3 children to keep the 

class open. All classes are under the direction of Gymnastics Supervisor Sheena Torres. Fees are 

for one class per week. Your coach reserves the right to move your child if necessary. 

The Preschool Gymnastics program is set up like an obstacle course.

*Example for Vault; we will have frog sacks for hopping races, a mini trampoline, mini vault with 

springboard, etc. 

The last day of the session will be a combination of all four events. As the children get older the 

skills preformed at each station will vary. Please note that our Preschool gymnastics program is

Technique I, Technique II, and Pre X-Treme Team are classes offered to girls that have

team. Technique I and Technique II met twice a week for one hour each and Pre X-Treme Team

Safe Kids - Bicycle Helmets 

The Parks & Recreation Department is proud to 

be an active member in the Salina Safe Kids 

Chapter. Our goal is to promote the health and 

safety of children in Salina and Saline County. 

Our role in the chapter is to distribute bike 

helmets. Bike helmets reduce the risk of head 

injury by 85% and the risk of brain damage by 

almost 90%. The bike helmets are available 

through our office at 300 W. Ash, Rm. #100. 

Bike helmets are available in four sizes; Toddler, 

Small/Medium Youth, Medium/Large Youth, and 

Adult. Helmet cost is only $10.00 each. There 

is no limit on the number of helmets each family

To help insure that future generations in Salina

What’s Outside? Lakewood Discovery Center is located in Lakewood Park and is surrounded by 

99 acres of woods, prairie and lake. We are proud to be the guardians of Salina’s Urban Wildlife 

Sanctuary, which offers a safe place for the wildlife within city limits. Within the Sanctuary you will 

find nature trails winding through various habitats, including wooded canopy, a sandy shoreline, 

a meandering river channel, and a restored native prairie area. Just outside the Center, you will 

find herb, wildflower and butterfly gardens. There are also bird and squirrel feeders, all which 

attract wildlife and give you an opportunity to see the wild animals up close. For a more in-depth 

experience, you may call and schedule nature walks and/or tours Monday through Friday. To 

schedule a program, please call 826-7335. We will also be happy to answer any questions you

Once the site of a Native American battle in 1857, this natural area located in 

Indian Rock Park now provides the public with an opportunity to explore a variety 

of habitats. Indian Rock Nature Trail is designed to introduce you to these diverse

as it may have been when the settlers first came to this spot in 1858. To learn more about its

habitats as it meanders through scenic rock bluffs, woodland, lakeshore, and 

restored prairie. Follow the trail to the top of Indian Rock Hill for a spectacular 

view of Salina and the surrounding area, or to its base, the site of our two-acre 

fishing lake. The Indian Rock Natural Area is being maintained to recall the land 

geology, plants, and animals, as well as its place in history, you may partake of a self-guided tour 

by using the trail brochures, located at the trailhead 

on the southwest end of the park, or by calling the 

Lakewood Discovery Center (826-7335).

Lakewood Discovery Center trips and activities are designed to bring out the natural side 

in you and are structured around natural/educational points of interest. Our destinations/ 

programs range from minimal physical activity to strenuous activity. To better gauge the activities 

suited for you, we’ve assigned a star system to each event, ranging from 1–5 stars.

the Red Carpet Country 

in Northcentral 

Oklahoma will be

locations; hiking the rugged wooded canyons 

of Roman Nose State Park, and exploring the 

amazing crystal salt flats of the Salt Flats wildlife 

area. We will be staying overnight in cabins at 

Roman Nose State Park, we will take in the views 

of the park on an afternoon hike that crosses 

canyons, mesas, craggy bluffs, and woodlands 

that cover the Oklahoma landscape. We will 

enjoy a campfire supper and a night under the 

stars. On Sunday we will head north to the 

unique salt flats to explore this natural deposit 

of salt crystals that grow under the surface of 

the ground. The pure white ground extends as 

far as the eye can see.

stop, the brand new, just opened, Flint Hills

the beauty of the Flint Hills environment. How 

about a little culture at the Beach Museum 

highlighting the artist Yoshiro Ikeda? Ikeda’s 

work combines the organic aspects of nature, the 

ever-changing weather, and the art of dancing. 

For the grand finale of the day we proceed to 

McCain Auditorium to experience “Sleeping 

Beauty”; a breathtakingly beautiful, timeless, 

good-trumps-evil classical ballet, performed by 

the Moscow Festival Ballet.

The Civil War $1,975.00 

150th Anniversary Tour 


The Civil War is one of our nations most trying 

times as a country, the struggle between new 

and old ideas and the direction that our nation 

should take spawned the bloodiest time period 

that we have endured. The Civil War era is now 

one of the most popular time periods for people 

to study and experience. We will start our tour 

in the nation’s capitol, Washington D.C.. We 

will visit the Smithsonian museums, popular 

memorials and civil war sites. We will spend two 

days in the capital touring our history, then we 

will embark on our Civil War battle field tours. 

We will visit in succession Bull Run, Antietam, 

and Gettysburg, a full day for each site for you 

to take in all of the rich historical resources they 

have to offer. There will be many opportunities 

for customized experiences at each battlefield. 

These three iconic battles mark the beginning 

of the war, the high point and bloodiest battle, 

and the decisive blow to end the war. The 150th 

anniversary of the Civil War provides special 

events and exhibits at these parks that we will 

be able to enjoy. After our three day battlefield 

tour we will return to Washington D.C. return 

home. This seven day six night tour will reveal 

some of our nation’s most historical landmarks 

and the people that shaped our future. Limit: 30

Civil War in Kansas? *** 

Did you know that Harriet Tubman required slaves 

to walk on a bed of sweetgum fruit (stickers) to 

secure passage on the Underground Railroad? 

What about Quantrill posing as an abolitionist in 

Lawrence, Kansas to capture slaves to return to 

Missouri? Discover many more facts and have 

a great adventure as we journey to Lawrence 

for Civil War on the Western Frontier as they 

commemorate the early history surrounding 

the anniversary of Quantrill's Raid. We will 

also enjoy a wonderful meal and a night at the 

famous Eldridge Hotel. Sunday we will journey 

to Manhattan for an Underground Railroad 

tour featuring Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, 

Captain Mitchell, Strong Farm, Reverend Blood, 

and others who helped to make Kansas a free 

state! This program is brought to you through 

the cooperation Salina Parks and Recreation 

and the Smoky Hill Museum.

You have the right to sign up for this E-TREKS and have a great time. The meeting place 

will be the Smoky Hill Museum. After introductions, we’ll head out for the Ellsworth 

Correctional Facility to experience the living, working and program areas of the facility 

while learning how it operates. After a delicious lunch, we’ll visit the Saline County 

Sheriff’s Department where we’ll tour the Saline County Jail and try our hands at 

SIDNE, a vehicle that simulates the experience of driving while under the influence. 

Then we’ll learn how investigating crime has gone mobile, with a trip to the Salina 

Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit. See what this amazing piece of 

equipment can do. An information packet will be provided for all participants with important 

dress code information and other requirements for our various visits.

Special Populations 

Adult 

The Adult Special Populations Program runs year-round 

Program 

and is adapted to provide recreation to those with 

special needs ages 18 and older. A monthly calendar, registration 

form, and newsletter (News & Views) is published stating dates of 

activities, times, locations, fees, and other important information. If you would like to be added 

to our mailing list or to request further information about our programs, please call the Parks & 

Recreation office at 309-5765. Pre-registration and payment in full is required before an activity 

begins. Below is a sample of various activities provided during the spring months. Transportation 

is provided within the city limits for most activities for an additional fee. 

LET’S EAT! - Once a month we choose a restaurant to 

visit for a meal. It may be in or out of town. Movie Night 

and Let’s Eat are sometimes combined for Dinner & a 

Movie. The locations, dates, and times are posted on 

the monthly calendar. 

DANCES - Approximately every other month a 

dance is held at Friendship Center, 746 Commanche. 

Transportation is not provided to dances. Refreshments 

are provided. 

BOWLING - Bowling is offered twice a month at All Star 

Lanes. Each participant will bowl two games each week. 

SPORTING EVENTS - Trips to various seasonal sporting 

events are offered each month if available. These may 

include: W.S.U. games, Wichita Wingnuts, Kansas City 

Royals, T-Bones games, or Wichita Thunder Hockey. 

ZUMBA - Ditch the work-out.. Join the party!! Are you ready 

to party yourself into shape? Thats exactly what the Zumba 

program is all about. It's an exhilarating, effective, easy to 

follow, latin inspired, calorie burning dance fitness party that's 

moving millions of people toward health. 

MOVIE NIGHT - Once a month we travel to Showplex Cinemas 

in the Central Mall to watch a movie. Participants choose the 

movie they want to see. Choices are then narrowed down 

to the most popular two. The group is split up, and a staff 

member accompanies each group to their respective movie. 

All movies chosen are PG13 and under. 

ESCAPE PACKAGES - These include day trips to local or regional attractions 

including Worlds of Fun, Kansas Cosmosphere, Wichita zoo, and others. 

GETAWAY PACKAGES - These trips are medium priced and are usually 1-3 

days in length. They have included Kansas City, Omaha, Oklahoma City, & 

Wichita. 

ADVENTURE SERIES PACKAGES - These trips are major vacations 3-7 

days in length with lots of activities planned. Previously trips have included 

Miami Beach, New York City, Las Vegas, Disney World, San Francisco, and 

cruises.

travel opportunities for area senior citizens and other

This monthly newsletter is published the last 

Monday of each month in the Salina Journal’s 

Neighbor’s section. This insert includes a 

calendar of events and activities for Salina 

Parks & Recreation, the Salina Senior Center, 

Friendship Meals menu, and other resource

Senior Center, Parks and Recreation Office, and 

the Parks and Recreation kiosk in the Central

Computer Classes 

The Salina Parks & Recreation Department, 

and the Salina Senior Center, offers a variety of 

computer courses. A class on computer basics 

is offered the second week of each month, at 

1:00 pm. An “E-Mail/Internet” class is offered 

the third week of each month at 1:00 pm. 

SCUG (Senior Computer Users Group) meets 

the fourth week of each month at 1:00 pm. A 

genealogy interest group meets at 1:00 pm the 

first and third Friday of the month. Open lab is 

available Monday through Friday at 9:00 am. 

Registration is not required and these classes 

are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bal-A-Vis-X Exercises $20.00 

This unique class is a series of Balance/Auditoruy/ 

Vision/ eXercises of varied compleexity , all of

are done with sand-filled bags or racquetballs. 

These exercises enable the whole mind-body 

system to experience, promotes self challenge 

and fosters peer teaching. It is just plain fun.

Body Shaping 

Body Shaping has been developed through the 

cooperation of the Salina Family YMCA and the 

Salina Parks and Recreation 50 Plus Program. 

This class is designed for those interested in 

weight training, walking, using a treadmill, 

elliptical, stationary bike, and more. Class 

meets in the YMCA Fitness Room on Monday, 

Wednesday, and Friday from 10-11:30 am or 

1-2:30 pm. Monthly fees are $15.50 for 2 days/ 

week, or $20.50 for 3 days/week. An instructor 

is available to help develop a personal training 

plan and assist with the machines. This is a great 

way to tone muscles and stay fit. Registration

Gazebos & Stage 

The Parks & Recreation Department has two 

gazebos available for your use at no charge: 

One small gazebo in the Oakdale Park Formal 

Gardens and one small gazebo in Sunset Park. 

The large gazebo in Jerry Ivey Park can be 

reserved for a minimal. The Eric Stein Stage 

at Oakdale Park can also be reserved through 

the Parks & Recreation office. Potential users of 

the stage in Oakdale and the Ivey Park Gazebo 

are required to fill out a permit application 

to reserve these facilities. Call 309-5765 for 

reservations up to one year in advance. 

Park Restrooms 

Seasonal restroom facilities are available at 

our community parks and larger neighborhood 

parks. Restrooms are open from early April until 

late October. Year-round heated restrooms are 

available in Oakdale Park, Jerry Ivey Park, Bill 

Burke Park, ECRA, and at the four downtown 

locations. 

Spray Grounds 

The latest additions to the Salina park system 

are water playgrounds opened at three different 

park sites. Located in Jerry Ivey, Centennial 

and Hawthorne School Parks, the spray grounds 

have both in-ground and above-ground interactive 

features, built-in seating, and shade 

structures. These facilities will be open daily 

throughout warm weather months, weather 

permitting.

centers, two buildings in the parks and the Golf Course 

Clubhouse available for use by civic organizations, family reunions,

users of the neighborhood centers, the Eric Stein Stage in Oakdale and the 

Jerry Ivey Park Gazebo are required to fill out a permit application to reserve these

Bicycle/Pedestrian Path 

In April 1993, the City of Salina was awarded a 

grant from the KS Department of Transportation 

for construction of a biking/jogging path 

on the flood control levee in the east part of 

town. This project was funded 80% by KDOT’s 

Transportation Enhancement Program and 20% 

by City of Salina funds. Totaling 3.1 miles from 

Bill Burke Park to Magnolia Road, the path is 

constructed of crushed limestone screenings on 

the levee and along the river in Bill Burke Park, 

and reinforced concrete along and under the 

Crawford Street bridge. Completed in the fall of 

1995, this community project provides excellent 

transportation and recreation opportunities for 

pedestrians, joggers, and bicyclists. Additional 

path entry points are available in Oxbow Park 

and on East Cloud Street. All users are asked to 

observe the posted rules.
