MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c® <strong>Auto</strong><br />
The new high performance coat<strong>in</strong>g
INNOVATIVE COATING<br />
WITH HIGHER VALUE<br />
IN USE<br />
MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c® <strong>Auto</strong> is an <strong>in</strong>novative, th<strong>in</strong> hot dip z<strong>in</strong>c coat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
alloyed with alum<strong>in</strong>ium and magnesium. Specially designed<br />
for <strong>the</strong> <strong>automotive</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> offers a number<br />
of advantages. Along with outstand<strong>in</strong>g resistance to corrosion<br />
and stone chipp<strong>in</strong>g, it reduces coat<strong>in</strong>g thickness and lowers<br />
weight creat<strong>in</strong>g value. Excellent press shop and assembly<br />
performance ensure higher yields. All result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a lower<br />
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).<br />
MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> at a glance:<br />
In comparison to conventional z<strong>in</strong>c coat<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
• Th<strong>in</strong> (35/35 g/m2) hot-dip z<strong>in</strong>c<br />
coat<strong>in</strong>g alloyed with alum<strong>in</strong>ium<br />
and magnesium (1.4 – 1.8 %)<br />
• Improved corrosion resistance<br />
(2 to 4 times)<br />
• Improved resistance to<br />
stone chipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• Lower weight<br />
• Improved weldabililty for<br />
shorter cycle times<br />
• Cost effective<br />
• Th<strong>in</strong>ner coat<strong>in</strong>g improves<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />
• Excellent process<strong>in</strong>g properties<br />
lower TCO<br />
• Reduced gall<strong>in</strong>g for higher<br />
press shop yield
High value <strong>in</strong> use<br />
Thanks to its advanced properties, MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> lowers <strong>the</strong> Total<br />
Cost of Ownership (TCO) and improves susta<strong>in</strong>ability by reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> consumption of valuable raw materials.<br />
Improved press shop performance<br />
Our advanced MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> reduces gall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
by 20% and <strong>the</strong> frequency for press shop<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>tenance. This was demonstrated by <strong>in</strong>-house<br />
test<strong>in</strong>g and presented <strong>in</strong> a report at SCT 2011 and<br />
Galvatech 2011.<br />
MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> is characterised by more constant<br />
press<strong>in</strong>g behaviour. Unlike conventional<br />
galvanised coat<strong>in</strong>gs (GI), surface textur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong>tact at all press<strong>in</strong>g stages reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
need for additional (spot) lubrication. This has<br />
been demonstrated <strong>in</strong> actual customer press<br />
shop trials.<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong> target applications of MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong><br />
are severe deep draw<strong>in</strong>g parts. The new<br />
coat<strong>in</strong>g enables a larger process w<strong>in</strong>dow for<br />
press<strong>in</strong>g parts. This clearly improves press shop<br />
performance compared with GI – regardless of oil<br />
type and with less sensitivity to <strong>the</strong> amount of oil<br />
required (see graph). This is an important factor<br />
when it comes to lower<strong>in</strong>g TCO <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> press shops.<br />
Excellent pa<strong>in</strong>tability with<br />
improved weldability<br />
The pa<strong>in</strong>tability of MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> is comparable<br />
to conventional z<strong>in</strong>c coat<strong>in</strong>gs. Spot weldability<br />
is excellent with a wide weld current range<br />
(>1.7kA). As demonstrated <strong>in</strong> a series of weld<strong>in</strong>g<br />
trials, <strong>the</strong> electrode life of MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> is high<br />
compared to GI100 and GI140 coat<strong>in</strong>gs. This<br />
improved weldability ensures higher l<strong>in</strong>e-up<br />
time and shorter cycle times.<br />
Ideal for corrosion-sensitive applications<br />
Along with <strong>the</strong> advantages for press shop and<br />
assembly, MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> offers a number of<br />
benefits <strong>in</strong> vehicle eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. This <strong>in</strong>novative<br />
coat<strong>in</strong>g offers two to four times more corrosion<br />
protection than GI, as shown <strong>in</strong> illustration,<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g its way <strong>in</strong>to high corrosive environments.<br />
Next to its improved corrosion resistance,<br />
as proven by <strong>the</strong> French Corrosion Institute,<br />
MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> has a better stone chipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
resistance. Due to this advantage and its gall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and edge corrosion properties, MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong><br />
is especially suitable for exterior panels. The<br />
surface quality which is required for this type of<br />
applications is currently under development.<br />
Susta<strong>in</strong>ability: achiev<strong>in</strong>g more<br />
with less resources.<br />
Due to its high performance, MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong><br />
achieves more by consum<strong>in</strong>g less resources.<br />
This <strong>in</strong>novat<strong>in</strong>g coat<strong>in</strong>g is our answer to <strong>the</strong> ever<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g demand for susta<strong>in</strong>able solutions <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>automotive</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. From steel suppliers<br />
apply<strong>in</strong>g less z<strong>in</strong>c, through higher yield <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
press shop to lower amounts of z<strong>in</strong>c <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />
<strong>the</strong> product.<br />
Available for a variety of steel grades<br />
and dimensions<br />
MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> is available on form<strong>in</strong>g, high<br />
strength and advanced high strength steel<br />
grades. Next to MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c <strong>Auto</strong> with a coat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
layer of 70 gr/m 2 , we supply MagiZ<strong>in</strong>c coat<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
up to 200 gr/m 2 . A choice of surface treatments is<br />
available upon request.<br />
