It is our pleasure and privilege to serve as co-presidents
in 2008, the year of celebration of the
University of Tennessee Gardens’ Silver Anniversary.
We are especially honored because the Gardens
have emerged as an exceptional experience—putting
increasing numbers of visitors in touch with a landscape
of horticulture and heritage in this community.
Thanks to the talents and efforts of Dr. Susan
Hamilton, James Newburn and a host of dedicated
volunteers, the Gardens today are more appealing
than ever. With the recent completion of the
Friendship Plaza, campus, community and Friends
will have many more opportunities for gathering,
greeting and learning in this special public space.
As a university search committee diligently seeks
additional leadership for the Gardens, we ask you,
our donors and special Friends, to join with us in
celebrating the 25 years that the Gardens have been
an essential part of the quality of life in our great
community. The new donor wall in the Friendship
Plaza—a stunning piece of sculpture made of
Tennessee marble—now sits above the Gardens site
as a testament to the past and present Friends who
have believed in the mission and essential value of
the Gardens.
Please join us as Silver Anniversary Friends of the
Gardens if you can. We will be happy to speak with
you personally to share our vision for the future of
the University Gardens.

To Friends of the
UT Gardens:
We have been astounded by the generosity of the many
donors who have recognized the significance of the
Gardens for its 25 years in the Knoxville community
and for its potential status as a State Botanical Garden
in Tennessee.
In response to our appeal, 20 donors will receive
permanent recognition on the marble donor wall in the
Gardens for gifts ranging from $2,500 to $25,000. The
first set of inscriptions on the first panels begins March
1. A second cutoff date for completing the list of
Silver Anniversary Friends is planned Aug. 15, with the
second set of inscriptions due to be completed in time
for the dedication of the Friendship Plaza Sept. 28.
All donations in support of the University Gardens’ 25 th
Anniversary Celebration are welcome. Donations at
the level of $250 and above will be recognized on the
annual donor listing in the Plaza. Donors at the level
of $2,500 and above are designated Silver Anniversary
Friends and will be permanently recognized by name
on the marble donor wall. Special recognition is
afforded larger donations as space is available. Please
call me if you wish to discuss options in recognition of
larger gifts.

Since 1983, the University of Tennessee
Gardens have exemplified the educational,
research and outreach missions

Annual Blooms Days in the 25 th anniversary
year of 2008 at all UTFCU branches.

Annual Report 2007
Established in 1992, the Friends of the University
of Tennessee Gardens is an 800-member nonprofit
501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to advocate,
promote and raise funds for the Gardens from citizens
on the university campus, in the community and
across the state.
Internally, the Friends continued to improve the operations
of a rapidly growing organization, adding for
the first time a quarter-time executive director to
a part-time administrator and a part-time coordinator
for member services. In 2007, membership
increased nearly 30 percent and funds raised grew by
more than 85 percent.
On behalf of the Gardens, the Friends joined forces
with community groups, professionals and contractors
to complete two major projects:
With a grant of $5,000 in 2006 from the
դդ
Knoxville Garden Club, a project involving input
and art work from schoolchildren and twig artist
Kelly Brown assisted garden designer Sherae
Patterson and the Gardens staff to complete
renovation of the Touchstone Table Garden in
2007. A second grant of $10,000 in late 2007
from the KGC has also been awarded in recognition
of the club’s 85 th Anniversary and the
Gardens’ 25 th Anniversary, both to be celebrated
in 2008.
Beginning with a signal donation of $10,000
դդ
from Henry McIlwaine Jr. in 2006, and a challenge
grant from an anonymous donor of another
$10,000, the Friends leveraged additional
funding from members, new donors and corporate
sponsors to continue Phase 2 and Phase 3
of the Friendship Plaza reconstruction, valued
at nearly $100,000, in 2007. All basic hardscaping
elements were to be finished by the end
of 2007. The Plaza will afford a gathering place
with flexible configuration for many different
types of events. A final phase will seek to match
remaining features with donors. Still awaiting
final decision as the year came to an end was a
grant from the University Campus Beautification
for furnishings. A final report on this project
should be available by early 2008.
In 2007, the Friends of the University Gardens demonstrated
support for the Gardens by:
Continuing discussion with University of

Tennessee Institute of Agriculture administrators
for how best to obtain and fund experienced,
executive leadership for the Gardens in order to
help make them sustainable and build support
in the community for additional personnel and
infrastructure.
Meeting with state industry and community
դդ
leaders to explore prospects for cooperation and
more substantial funding for this horticultural
resource.
Developing relationships for the long term
դդ
for stewardship of public service aspects of
the Gardens, both in the present and future
locations.
Collaborating with other community groups in
դդ
demonstrating the value of nearby nature, gardens
and public spaces to the quality of life
of our citizens.
Supporting student interns in spring, summer and
դդ
fall with funding of $24,640.
Facilitating educational programs.

Surveying visitors to the Gardens.

Beginning planning for celebration of the Gardens

Silver Anniversary in 2008.

դդA first co-op advertisement in the CityView
philanthropy issue sponsored by Stanley’s
Greenhouses.
դդA three-way cooperative venture with WUOT-FM
and University of Tennessee Personal and
Professional Development for promoting 10
educational courses attended by 179 students,
only 22 of whom were members of the Friends.
Regularly updated welcome boards, brochures and

newsletters in the Gardens.
Distribution of the rack cards in all East Tennessee

tourist welcome centers.
A third printing of the development brochure with

a full spectrum of opportunities for support.
դդRegular publicity sent to 65 East Tennessee and UT
media for at least 60 recurring and special events
in the Gardens, as well as central distribution for
main events through the Tennessee Department
of Tourist Development.

8,000 readers in eight issues.
Periodic listserv advisories and queries to nearly

200 subscribers, plus a regularly updated Web site.

The Friends raised funds for the Gardens in 2007 by:
դդDeveloping case statements for increased public
support of the Gardens.
Developing contacts and beginning conversations

with donors to the Gardens for permanent recognition
on the new marble donor wall in the Plaza.
դդMaintaining accurate listings of donors and making
timely acknowledgements in cooperation with the
UTIA Development Office.
դդAttracting our first major corporate donor—the UT
Federal Credit Union—in anticipation of celebration
of the 25 th Anniversary of the Gardens in
2008.
Increasing membership in the Friends nearly 30

and avid gardener Mineko Lewis. A retired English
instructor at UT, Mineko was active in both the French
Club and the University Gardens. For many years she
donated to the Adopt-a-Garden program in memory of her
