In the decade since Scott Sturdy and his band of ’02
Group brothers and sisters convened the first ‘Gathering of
Perfectly Aged BMW Motorcars’ at the Westbend Winery in
Lewisville, the event has grown by leaps and bounds. It has
outgrown its original vineyard venues, shed its ‘vineyard’
label, and turned into an official BMW CCA Regional Event.
Titled simply The Vintage and still overseen by Sturdy, it
now takes place annually in Old Salem Village in Winston-
Salem. And in this correspondent’s not-so-humble opinion,
it easily rivals quite a few of the National Oktoberfests of
recent years in both attendance and ambiance. Here’s why.
The Gathering this past May was even bigger than
last year’s record show. It attracted 280 ‘show’ cars – BMWs ranging from Isettas and Neue Klasse
sedans to the latest models allowed by Vintage rules, in this case BMWs from the late ‘80s – and
one lone motorcycle! On Saturday, the cars created a gorgeous multi-colored panorama of BMW’s
history as they lined the historic village’s Main Street from end to end. Their drivers had come to
from as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Canada, Maine and Minnesota, which kind of put the lie to the
