Located 30km north east of central
Auckland and just 4km from the end
of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Tiritiri
Matangi Island is one of New Zealand’s most important
and exciting conservation projects. 120 years of farming
saw this 220-hectare island stripped of 94% of its native
bush, but between 1984 and 1994 volunteers planted
between 250,000 and 300,000 trees. The island is
now 60% forested. The remaining 40% will be left as
grassland for species such as the Takahe. In conjunction
with this planting programme, all mammalian predators
have been eradicated and a number of species of
threatened and endangered birds have been successfully
introduced. Nowhere else in New Zealand can you
readily walk amongst so many species in such significant
quantities. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring
Tamaki Hikoi
For years, Maori from local Ngati
Whatua tribe have passed down
from generation to generation,
sacred tribal history, traditions
and ancient stories. Guides from
the Ngati Whatua tribe re-tell these ancient and sacred
stories on the Tamaki Hikoi - a walking tour through
Auckland. Learn how Ngati Whatua discovered Tamaki
(Auckland), why it was so fiercely fought over, how
the people co-existed with the land and the arrival of
foreign vessels to Tamaki shores. The walk begins at
Maungawhau (Mt Eden); the site of a majestic Pa (Maori
strategic stronghold). You will walk past iconic Auckland
landmarks, stopping along the way at places of historical
significance to the Maori. After a brief break the journey
continues through the heart of the city, before coming
to an end at the edge of the Waitemata Harbour on
Auckland’s waterfront. A moderate level of walking
ability required. Wear comfortable walking shoes and
General Information
Auckland – Your Host City
Auckland is an urban environment where everyone
lives within half an hour of beautiful beaches, hiking
trails and a dozen enchanted holiday islands including
Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Islands. It has
a warm, sunny climate, a background rhythm of
Polynesian culture and a passion for outstanding food,
wine and shopping. In the Maori language, Auckland is
known as Tamaki Makau Rau, the city of 100 lovers. It
earned this name because it was a place desired by all
and conquered by many.
The Auckland region is an antipasto of environments
laid out on a huge platter to make one amazing city,
boasting three harbours, two mountain ranges, 48
volcanic cones and more than 50 islands. Auckland’s
population is approximately 1.3 million, making it by
far the largest city in New Zealand, with one third of the
country’s entire population.
Auckland is a gourmet lovers delight – hundreds of
restaurants, locally-grown specialties and awardwinning
wines to match. “Pacific Rim” cuisine is an
Auckland specialty, fusing Pacific and Asian flavours
with fresh local produce. Most of Auckland’s unique
places and major attractions are within half an hour of
the central city. Whether you rent a car, catch a bus or a
train or board a ferry, you’ll quickly be where you want
to be. For those who prefer the convenience of a tour,
you can choose from a range of operators offering a
variety of sightseeing trips and experiences.
For more information about Auckland, visit www.
aucklandnz.com
Arriving in Auckland
Travelling to Auckland is easy with the Auckland
International Airport only 10 kilometers from the city
centre. A 5-minute walk connects the domestic and
international terminals, and a free inter-terminal bus
service is also available. A number of shuttle buses,
Maxx regional transport and Airbus services operates
airport transfer services to hotels and the city centre.
Rental cars are located in the arrivals terminal at both
the domestic and international airport. Taxi ranks
are situated at the western side of the Jean Batten
International Terminal and in front of the Air New
Zealand and Qantas domestic terminals.
