Fieldbus systems are used in digital networks which control machines and devices within a production plant<br />
with the help of actuators and sensors.<br />
The IEC standard 61158-2 defines the profile of so-called H1 buses. The bus systems Profibus and<br />
FOUNDATION Fieldbus now predominant in process automation, follow this communication protocol.<br />
Fieldbuses shall meet the following requirements<br />
• Use in hazardous and non-hazardous areas<br />
• High transmission speeds<br />
• Large amounts of data<br />
• Real-time ca<strong>pa</strong>bilities<br />
• Deterministic<br />
• Energy supply via bus<br />

Levels of the Hierarchy<br />
Digital communication and data transfer within a production structure takes place horizontally, i.e. between<br />
devices on one level, and vertically, to the systems on the other levels of the hierarchy.<br />
