SPECIAL SELECTIONS
$USD
Public’s close relationship with the food and wines of the Antipodes has led us to
assemble a uniquely focused wine list offering a vital and evolving selection of
New Zealand and Australian wine – unparalleled in the United States.
Here are some special varietal selections from two of our favourite producers
Henschke Vineyards (Barossa Valley, Australia)
The Henschke Vineyards which date back to the dawn of Australian viticulture (in the 1860s)
are now owned and run by Stephen and Prue Henschke, the family’s sixth generation of wine
makers. Prue farms biodynamically and provides fruit for Stephen’s winemaking that produce
wonderful and elegant wines that provide a multi varietal window into South Australia.
Pinot Noir, “Giles”, 2010 105
Shiraz, “Mount Edelstone”, 2005 197
Shiraz, “Hill of Grace” 1990 690
1994 700
2006 999
The Shiner Concern
When stripped of the perception of a winemaker’s pedigree and with no knowledge of the
vineyard, do we enjoy a wine differently?
AvroKO, Chef Brad Farmerie and Napa wine guru Adam Gordon are introducing two new wines – a
Chardonnay and a Cabernet blend – produced by highly acclaimed Napa and Sonoma winemakers
whose identities will never be revealed. Named after ‘a shiner’ (the term given to a labelless
wine) the anonymity allows us to enjoy the flavors without regard to ratings, specific
provenance or the winemakers’ pedigrees.
The unnamed, masked shiner bottles are available as a limited edition.
Inquire with our sommelier.
ANTIPODEAN INFLUENCE ABROAD
$USD
The benefit of having a centuries-old winemaking tradition (think Bordeaux and Tuscany)
include an understanding of the most sucessful grape varietals, a deep understanding of
local terroir and often international recognition based on a long track record.
Sometimes, however, a lengthy wine tradition carries baggage and red tape that inhibits
new techniques and creativity.
In places such as Australia and New Zealand a lack of strict wine laws and tradition
has inspired just the opposite: a reinvention of winemaking technique and philosophy.
By virtue of their antipodean seasons many Aussies and Kiwis migrate northward after
their autumn to make wines in Europe (and the US), bringing with them their refreshing
point of view and energy. Some of those émigrés choose to stay on in the north and we
have selected a few wines from the Old World and the US made by some of them. Enjoy!
David Family, Pinot Noir, 2007 164
(Santa Lucia Valley, California)
Australian proprietor Michelle Reeves donates ten percent of each bottle sale to
Habitat for Humanity.
A Tribute to Grace, Grenache 2010 112
(Santa Barbera, California) 2007 magnum 231
Biodynamic wine by New Zealander Angela Osborne. This wine is a lighter
expression of grenache, and named in honor of her grandmother, Grace.
Sequel, Syrah, 2008 113
(Columbia Valley, Washington)
John Duval is legendary for his years of making Penfold’s Grange. When he
branched off on his own, he started making some fantastic Barossa wines… but
he gets restless in the off-season! Luckily for him there is a Northern
Hemisphere with an opposite season. Each fall he heads to Washington State and
keeps busy making this powerful syrah.
Futo, Cabernet Sauvignon+, 2007 417
(Napa Valley, California)
Winemaker Jason Exposto studied viticulture and enology at Lincoln University
in New Zealand. After winemaking stints in Western Australia and New Zealand
he moved to Napa and studied with David Abreu before taking the reigns at Futo.

THE “AUSTRALIAN” BLEND
$USD
Just as merlot is used to flesh out the sometimes austere character of cabernet sauvignon
the world over, syrah was once used in Bordeaux to do the same thing ~ adding spice,
fruit and gusto to a reserved cabernet. In Australia that blend has become a classic,
finding itself the base for many of the country’s most highly regarded and serious wines
and these selections, from some of Australia’s better known producers, deftly illustrate
the style.
