Endowment Golf Classic August 15, 2011 RETIREMENTS Flossmoor Country Club & Idlewild Country Club Members of the 2011 Endowment Golf Classic Committee at their May meeting are seated, Kerry Beukema ’00, Sandy Sweeney, Greg Underwood, EGC Co-Chair, Eileen Gallagher Daw ’78, Tracey Anderson, and Byron Anderson ’79. Standing is Mike Murphy ’70, Joe Zagone ’74, Sue Sheehan Trump ’75, Robert Gromala ’97, Carol Burke Swanson ’81, and Jim Matese ’74. Those not pictured include Mark Peifer ’81, EGC Co-Chair, John Brennan ’97, Carlo Gozzi ’00, Patrick Hanifin ’03, Tony Makarek ’64, Mary Moffatt, Ryan Noth ’03, Tom Raczka ’00, Shannon Reidy ’90, Susan Van Etten ’80, and Marielle Zagone. Sr. Agnes Ann Pisel, O.P., taught Theology at Marian for 31 years at all levels, but most recently found an attachment to teaching the freshmen. She’s one of the key figures at Marian Catholic who knows the generations of families that have called MCHS home. Her love of Marian is evident in her dedication to the students and her caring ways. We will miss her gentle sense of humor and constant support of all that is Marian Catholic. Sister will enjoy a well-deserved year’s sabbatical and discern where God will lead her next. Fortunately, she will continue to keep her home residence at Marian through the fall semester. Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President, announced in August 2010 that the Endowment Golf Classic Fund of Marian Catholic High School has now reached over $2 million, thanks primarily to the efforts of Endowment Golf Classic committees, golfers, and sponsors over the past 21 years. While savvy investing and careful stewardship of the Fund remains steadfast, the overwhelming participation of golfers and sponsors has steadily contributed to the Fund’s growth. A record thirty-seven students received scholarships from the Endowment Fund for the 2010-2011 school year; students who might not otherwise have been able to continue their education at Marian Catholic. “I am dedicated to Marian Catholic and am honored to be awarded this scholarship. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me,” remarked one recipient who begins her senior year this fall. To add even more excitement to an already great day of golf, the committee this year has added a $100,000 Hole-in-One shootout, which will see the winners of the men’s and women’s “closest to the pin” contests from both Idlewild and Flossmoor Country Clubs (4), and the golfers with the lowest net score from each course (2) qualify for a 165-yard shot. With a crowd gathered around the 18th hole at Flossmoor CC before dinner, including golfers and guests looking on from the patio and balcony, the six contestants will take their best shot at $100,000. There is still time to reserve your sponsorship or golf in the August 15th outing. You can also join the group for dinner and the terrific silent auction that evening. Call Gail Young (708) 756-9770 to make arrangements. Bob Rodey came to Marian Catholic 18 years ago, after retiring from the public school system. Along with his sidekick, faculty member Mike Raftery, Bob helped establish the American Studies program at Marian Catholic and also taught history. Bob is best known for his engaging class discussions on issues of American History. He has an uncanny ability to make history come alive and capture the imagination of students. In retirement, Bob will use his wealth of knowledge and experience to help write the new AP History tests. Sandy Riley has been at Marian for 24 years. Madame Riley was hired as a theology teacher, but taught French for 23 of her 24 years at Marian. Madame Riley is a gracious woman who instilled a love of the French culture in her students. She is always most sincere in helping her students succeed. Sandy intends to travel to her homeland of Italy and enjoy being with her extended family. She promises to come back to Marian periodically as a substitute teacher. 4
Metro Alumni and Friends at Union League Continued from page 1 Our new Communications Coordinator is James M. Murphy ’05 who is currently a staff accountant and client services manager at State Street Financial Group. James is a member of DePaul’s President Club and the Young Alumni Committee at DePaul, and is a member of the Marian Catholic Young Alum Phonathon Committee. “This year’s event at the Union League Club provided an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with the Marian community. Many different graduation years were represented by those in attendance. Being from the class of ’05, I was glad to see that there were ten to fifteen 2005 graduates. The best part about the event was that it was downtown in the loop and easy to get to after work,” said Murphy. The alumni office is very excited to have the commitment from all three alums and looks forward to this new partnership with them. One of the highlights of the evening was the formal commissioning of the officers of the newly visioned Marian Catholic Alumni Association by Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President, who read a prayer written for the occasion by Sister Margaret Schreiber, O.P. ’67, a Dominican Sister and an Alumna who authored the blessing, establishing a very poignant tradition. “This new leadership brings a fresh perspective to the MCHS Alumni Association. This was a great event to kick off the newly energized and revitalized Alumni Association. There was an electric energy in the room that was undeniable. With this strong kick off, and with this motivated leadership, our Alumni Association will definitely touch more people,” said Carol Burke Swanson ’81, Director of Alumni Relations. The Class of 1984 was well represented at the Metro Gathering by Tim Fallon, John Benish, Mario Pierre-Jerome, Kelly O’Hea Taylor, Mike Lyman, Bill Sullivan, and Jim Hughes. Equally well represented was the Class of 2005 which included Kevin Moffatt, Valerie Ruiz, Kevin Rippey, Colleen Peabody, Victoria Zylstra, James M. APPALACHIA 2011 Service Trip Sister Dorothy Marie Solak, O.P., nine adult chaperones (who serve as drivers, worker bees and cook) plus twenty-five students going into their senior year at Marian Catholic, set off on the annual summer pilgrimage to Harlan, Kentucky for the first of two mission trips in conjunction with C.O.A.P. (Christian Outreach to Appalachian People) based in Harlan. An eye-opening and heartwarming adventure, MCHS students endured bug bites, sunburns, paint splatters and occasional bruises to accomplish their assigned jobs of siding, landscaping, demolition, painting, and site clean-up. After dinner, much-needed showers, and some free time, everyone gathered to reflect on the day’s events, many becoming aware of skills and talents they didn’t know they possessed. The group is pictured just before reflection time on the final night of the journey. 5
