IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL CRISIS (Mid 2009)<br />

In 2009 real GDP growth will fall to 3%, the slowest rate since the early 1990s, before recovering in 2010. The main engines of<br />

industrial growth (construction and mining ) depending on financing from international donors are expected to slow down linked to<br />

the global credit crunch. Exports will contract in 2009-10, owing to slower economic growth in the country's main exports markets as<br />

well as low global prices for energy and minerals. In addition, decreasing demands for electricity abroad, especially in Thailand,<br />

have resulted in a drop of over 30% in electricity exports to that country. Moreover, coffee and garment exports have also dropped<br />

over 20% each, while agricultural products face a dramatic drop in their prices.Gold will fare better, with global prices edging up<br />

2,9% this year, but that will not be enough to prevent a contraction in exports.<br />
