IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL CRISIS (Mid 2009)
In 2009 real GDP growth will fall to 3%, the slowest rate since the early 1990s, before recovering in 2010. The main engines of
industrial growth (construction and mining ) depending on financing from international donors are expected to slow down linked to
the global credit crunch. Exports will contract in 2009-10, owing to slower economic growth in the country's main exports markets as
well as low global prices for energy and minerals. In addition, decreasing demands for electricity abroad, especially in Thailand,
have resulted in a drop of over 30% in electricity exports to that country. Moreover, coffee and garment exports have also dropped
over 20% each, while agricultural products face a dramatic drop in their prices.Gold will fare better, with global prices edging up
2,9% this year, but that will not be enough to prevent a contraction in exports.
