residential and administration buildings 

Modern building technology and higher demands on living comfort have fundamentally changed electrical 

installation in private houses and residential buildings. The days of “just a few sockets and switches” are long 

gone. Nowadays, links to modern telecommunication and data services are a must, even in private dwellings. 

The same goes for administration buildings that have to be equipped not only with an efficient power supply, 

but also with complex data and communication networks. 

Rapid skirting duct system 

Creating the maximum of space in the smallest of rooms – this 

is the benefit offered by OBO’s Rapid 45 duct: compact 

design with 45 mm cover, high-quality aluminium body, anodised 

or coated to RAL, also available in white plastic or aluminium-look, 

fast device installation without sockets. 

Device installation duct systems 

Choose from a range of profiles and duo-ducts with separate 

data section. All RAL colours, powder-coatings and special 

lengths of up to 3 m (up to 6 m for aluminium) are possible. The 

elegant systems are complemented by a space-saving and fastinstallation 

range of devices in the Modul 45 adapter technology.

Media columns 

Media columns are particularly suitable for administration buildings 

and offices. Installed at intersections or at the workstation 

itself, they can be easily “tapped” at any time. Flexible 

solutions in true OBO style: functional, elegant, in different profile 

variants and lengths of up to 6 m. In all RAL colours or anodised 

and fully pre-assembled and pre-wired on request. 

Underfloor systems 

The underfloor systems lend OBO’s Cable Management real 

style. They are concealed in the floor and make power, data 

and telecommunication networks invisible. Data floor outlets 

and/or media columns guarantee perfect connection options. 

This product range spans screed-covered ducts to screedflush 

systems through to cavity and false-floor systems. 

Modul 45 range 

Extremely compact and quick to install: Modul 45 type installation 

devices. Switches and sockets are simply clipped into 

position, – and remain available at all times should the installation 

be modified at a later date. Can be used for device installation 

ducts, underfloor systems, media columns and 

Deskbox. 

The final metre to the desk 

Flex duct and Deskbox mean the final metres to the desk can 

also be bridged easily and intelligently. Flex duct routes cables 

to the desk, Deskbox brings data and communication connections, 

sockets and switches elegantly and functionally 

within reach.

Cassette solutions for junction 

boxes and service boxes in floors

The cassette solutions are designed 

for use in dry rooms. The 

range includes cassettes with a 

centre tube cord outlet for floors 

which are mopped and versions 

with a edge cord outlet for drycleaned 

floors, plus blanking 

cassettes. They fulfil all the requirements 

of DIN VDE with respect 

to moisture protection and loadbearing 

capability. The narrow 

cassette frame fits flush with the 

floor covering after it is laid. 

The cables are protected and 

tread-proof, either by means of 

the edge cord outlet (for drycleaned 

floors) or by means of a

Use in heavy-duty areas 

The task of cable routing and unit installation occur in areas with high traffic loads, 

such as exhibition areas in museums and car showrooms, sales areas, concourses 

in airports and stations, workshops, etc. 

These areas are commonly referred to as heavy-duty areas, as here the live loads 

place additional requirements on the floors and the installation systems. Besides 

static forces, dynamic forces may also have an impact, which should be taken into 

account in individual cases. 

Installation systems and floor coverings – a need for harmony 

The floor structure, screed type, covering thickness and the floor covering type 

– these are all key factors in the selection of the installation systems. Stone or hard 

coverings are often used in heavy-duty areas, on account of the applications involved. 

These can be cleaned easily and are very resistant to the live loads. 

The type of the cleaning required for the floor covering has an impact on the selection 

of the installation systems. If wet cleaning for floors is required, then the covering 

must offer moisture protection for the cables and resources installed in the floor. 

With regard to the covering thickness, the type and thickness of the floor coverings 

are of major importance. The smallest of bends can cause thin, hard floor coverings 

to break. Thick floor coverings have a positive effect on the load capacity of 

systems, as the load is distributed over a wide area. 

Note 

As the thickness of the floor covering and the load capacity increase, the weight of 

the covers of the installation system also increases. As these may require “handling” 

in some cases, agreement is required from all involved parties at an early stage. 

In the case of smooth floor covering surfaces, suction units are a suitable aid for 

opening covers/cassettes. 

If the coverings are uneven or porous, then additional opening aids, such as 

threaded sleeves in the cassettes for installation keys, can be used. 

Standardisation 

In the current standard, DIN VDE 0634, load requirements for electrical installation 

systems are specified only for office applications. Although these requirements are 

relatively stringent, no products can be tested for the so-called heavy-duty sector. 

Current applications thus require detailed requirements from consultantes and 

construction engineers, and appropriate product testing. 

Ackermann – systems for the heavy-duty sector 

In recent years, Ackermann has worked closely with consultantes and construction 

engineers to develop a wide range of individual solutions for sectors with increased 

load requirements. 

As far as possible, these solutions are based on standard products, and tailor 

-made solutions are only created for the points at which the heavy-dutys impact. 

Based on the experience gained, there are now system solutions available for 

screed-flush and screed-covered installation. Flexibility and safety are at the heart of 

the development process. 

The moisture protection offered by the system corresponds to DIN VDE 0634. 

Screed-covered solution 

In the two system sizes, 250 and 350, the ducts S2 and S3 are used in the standard 

version, along with the UZD box. Additional supports in the box ensure the 

necessary stiffness and load capacity. 

To provide a cover above the device installation, square or round heavy-load cassettes 

are used along with the GRAF9 service unit together with the installation cover 

with heavy-load support. 

Load classes 

The system solution “heavy-duty, screed-covered” is available in two versions: 

- Load class 1 for static loads of up to 10 kN. 

- Load class 2 for static loads of up to 20 kN. 

- GRAF9 for loads of up to 7.5 kN.

The screed-covered duct system - EÜK - is used to cover large floor areas in office and administrative buildings 

with electrical resources. In the screed, ducts and floor boxes form a (dense) grid and make conductor routing and 

installation options available for electrical resources. 

The EÜK screed-covered duct system is layed, positioned and fastened on the bare concrete. The duct sections 

are covered by the screed. The boxes are flush with the screed.

The flushfloor trunking system - OKA/T - is used for conductor routing and the installation of electrical resources in 

the underfloor area. The trunking system can be opened along its entire length and is thus particularly suitable for 

regular changes to laid conductors in dry-cleaned floors. 

The primary advantages of the system include: no welds, snap-in partitions, no pre-fabricated junctions required, 

lid fixing at any point along the trunking route and floor service outlets at any point. 

These advantages reduce installation times and costs.

The Ackermann open, flushfloor trunking 

system, is accessible at all 

points in its route. This enables cabling

The raised floor trunking system – RFT – provides a modular cable way for power, voice and data. Formed by 

header trunking and branch trunking, a network of cable paths is created beneath the raised floor tiles in the 

600 mm grid of the floor. “Crossovers” guarantee safe separation of the different current types at crossing points. 

The trunking system requires no additional cutting and is thus extremely installation-friendly, flexible and safe.

Design 

service units consist of: 

– Floor covering protection frame and flushfloor frame 

including: 

– univseral fixing bracket, 

– hinged cover (captively located in the floor covering 

frame, lockable, automatic closing) including: 

- fushfloor lowerable or above-floor cord outlet with seal, 

- turn-lock fastener with automatic cover positioning, 

Cover structured with concentric circles - recesses and raised sections. 

Material 

Cover and protection frame made of die-cast aluminium, Tube made 

of polyamide. 

Function and design 

- The impressive surface - concentric circles, additionally emphasised by contrast 

varnishing of the recesses - removes the necessity of working the floor covering 

into the cover, which benefits both weight and handling. 

– The surface structure reliably prevents damage and scratching of the varnish, 

meaning that use is still possible in areas with high traffic loads, such as museums 

or ticket and exhibition halls. 

– The circular shape of the Service unit is independent of the direction and therefore 

combinable with all plan shapes. 

– All the materials used are extremely friction-resistant and are resistant against normal 

cleaning agents.

Laying the underfloor duct 

The underfloor ducts must be laid on the bare concrete of the building and then 

covered with the screed. 

Danger 

If there is insufficient screed covering of the ducts, then the screed may tear 

when there is a load. Comply with the minimum screed covering of the ducts 

(see VOB Part C/DIN 18353 and DIN 18560 “Floor screeds in 

building construction”). 

Use of underfloor boxes 

Two types of underfloor boxes are used: underfloor junction and branch box UZD 

and empty underfloor box UGD. Underfloor junction and branch boxes are placed 

in the duct section ... 

... to simplify conductor pulling (at a distance of approx. 8 m). 

... if there is a change in direction or junctions. 

Empty underfloor boxes are used to install flush-floor installation units, GRAF 9 

variable height service units or height adjustable cassettes. 

The decision whether an underfloor box is used as a junction or branch box or an 

empty underfloor box should be taken before applying the floor covering. 

We advise the general use of empty underfloor boxes, which can be equipped 

with service units GES or inserts ZES of the same size. Connection expansions by 

replacing service units GES are always possible with the appropriate box size. 

Connection system 

Electrical devices are installed in: 

- GES service units or RKS/RKRS/RKSN cassettes 

– Variable height GRAF9 or SH(F) service units or RKF/RKRF/RKFN cassettes 

– Telitank above-floor installation units. 

Expansion of the connection at a later date is possible by drilling the underfloor 

ducts. Units are then installed under an SH(F) protective cover or in a Telitank.

When planning and setting up underfloor electrical installation ducts, take the

Duct direction corrections 

Small duct direction corrections (up to 7°) in the course of the cable duct can be 

compensated in the insertion openings of the underfloor sockets without adjustment 

cuts (see Fig. “A”). 

Sloping duct insertions 

Sloping duct insertions (> 7°) can be created using appropriate adjustment cuts 

(see Fig. “B“) depending on the box size and insertion opening 

(see table below).

1. Use the duct layout plan to select a fixed 

starting point for the installation, for example a 

junction box. 

2. Tie two guide lines (approx 150 mm above the raw 

concrete) at 90º to each other, ensuring that they 

match the duct layout plan. 

3. Position the first junction box centrally below 

the intersection of the guide lines and level

4. Lay duct / trunking sections to reflect the layout 

plan. Ensure ducting compartments are aligned as 

indicated by the continuous marking on the top of 

the duct. 

5. Open the pre-punched side walls of the underfloor 

box and insert the duct as far as it will go. 

6. Fasten the underfloor / junction box and 

readjust to required screed depth level.

depth (max. 120 mm) using the levelling

Screed work 

As the duct system or part of the duct system serves as a binding pull 

gauge for the screed, the levelling must be agreed with the construction 

company. 

When applying the screed, the person laying the screed must 

carefully prepare, seal and pull away the screed around the junction 

boxes. 

Divider strips must not be used as the junction boxes can only achieve the 

robustness specified if they are joined directly to the screed. Using divider 

strips can damage the flooring. 

Important: 

Screed can be damaged by cracks. Do not put strain on adjacent systems 

and system components that are joined to the screed before the screed has 

hardened. 

Care should be taken to ensure that the sealing process does not create 

hollow areas between the components and the screed. Possible openings 

can be found, for example, at joints between ducts and connection lugs and 

vertical bends or to UZD/UGD underfloor sockets. The top connections, like 

the assembly protection cover and the assembly or blanking covers should 

be sealed using appropriate means. 

Aggressive screed (e.g. magnesia screed) 

With this screed, all metallic components which come into contact with the 

screed should be protected with an accredited corrosion protection agent 

based on epoxy resin (two coats).

Use in poured asphalt 

Essentially, there are no restrictions with respect to the use of the 

installation duct system in poured asphalt.

Screeds, general. 

Under some circumstances, chemical or thermal strain can occur which 

means taking special additional measures to protect the installed systems 

(see, for example, VOB Part C (ATV), DIN 18353, Paragraph 3.1.8). 

Use in poured screeds 

When using screed-covered duct system in poured screeds, all the 

openings in the duct system must be sealed using appropriate means (e.g. 

using adhesive tape). 

The following is deemed as the most practical approach to using the system 

in poured asphalt: 

a) Under no circumstances must the screed-covered ducts come into direct 

contact with the poured asphalt. The high installation temperature 

(approx. 250ºC) means that it is not impossible for metallic components to 

be deformed. 

b) The duct systems are laid on the bare concrete and fixed in accordance 

with the fitting instructions. 

c) The duct routes are protected against heat shock using an appropriate 

layer of insulation (e.g. Fasoperl sheets or bitumen-coated corrugated 

cardboard). 

d) The socket bodies do not require additional insulating strips. 

e) The poured asphalt is applied.

To be used in conjunction with levelling brakkets 

only. Insert screed anchors on side profiles 

and fix them by turning clockwise (at 800 

mm spacing, 6 on each standard trunking 

section). 

11. Optional: 

Cut levelling screws of fixing angles to 5 mm 

lower than top of side profile. (Use a tape to 

cover the top sides of side profiles to prevent ingress 

of screed into fixation holes.) 

12. Caution! Do not walk over trunking during 

screed work. Trunking may be used 

as a levelling plane. 

13. Earthing of trunking: 

All metallic parts of the trunking (base and 

side profiles) provide connection possibilities 

for the earth conductor clamp 8AWR (separate 

order no.). 

For fixed height trunking system, a smooth and levelled 

surface must have been prepared, onto 

which trunking system shall be installed. 

Arrange to provide ”Ribbon/Packing” screed below 

trunking profiles without leaving any pockets 

belows and secure base of trunking to floor slab at 

least at 600 mm spacing at holes provided at the 

base. 

Seal all openings and gaps with polythene sheets 

and/or masking tapes and/or silicon putty (to be 

supplied by installer). Provide rust preventive coat 

with zinc rich paint on all cut edges of trunking and 

components.

GES/GRAF9 Service units 

Requirements for use in wet-cleaned floors 

DIN VDE 0634 Part 1 defines moisture protection for flushfloor and variable 

height service units as follows: 

a) The service unit must be protected against water levels of 10 mm on the 

floor surface (resistant both in the operational and non-operational states). 

b) Unclosed openings, such as cable outlets must have a minimum distance of 

30 mm to the floor surface (splash protection). 

GES flushfloor service units and 

GRAF9 variable height service unit 

Flushfloor service units GES can, in line with the standard, only be used in dry 

rooms with dry-cleaned floors; by contrast GRAF9 variable - height service 

units can also be used in dry rooms with wet-cleaned floors. Both meet the 

relevant DIN VDE regulations and thus the level of safety required 

by the European Community. They are installed in the covers of underfloor 

boxes and underfloor trunkings of the appropriate 

underfloor systems. 

Accessories for power, telecommunications and data systems are mounted in 

separate mounting boxes or parts of such boxes made of insulating material. 

The use of mounting boxes made of insulating material provides the greatest 

possible safety against the transfer of error voltages from the power connection 

area to the telecommunications components or neighbouring metallic parts of 

the underfloor box or the underfloor trunking. All the incoming and outgoing 

connection conductors must have strain relief. The mounting boxes can be 

lowered into the interior of the underfloor box the underfloor trunking. The plug 

height (measure without contact pins) of the connected consumers may therefore 

vary between 27 and 47 mm. 

With a plug height of 47 mm, the screed height must be at least 80 mm. The 

mounting boxes can be lowered using notched guides. Flush-floor service units 

GES can be equipped with several (differing) mounting boxes, depending on 

the design. Each mounting box can be inserted, lowered and removed separately. 

SH(F) variable height service units 

SH variable height service units can, in accordance with the standard, only be 

used in dry rooms with dry-cleaned floors; however SHF variable height 

service units can also be used in dry rooms with wet-cleaned floors. Both meet 

the relevant VDE standards and thus the level of safety required by 

the European Community. 

A single accessory can be installed inside; the device and the connecting plug 

are protected by a hinged cover. The hinged cover has a rotating bearing so 

that the cord outlet opening can always be turned to the best possible position 

towards the consumer. 

Mounting of flushfloor service units (GES) 

1. During installation, it is assumed that floor covering has already been applied 

to the mounting covers and that the installation openings have been cut open. 

The mounting procedure for installing the service units is more or less identical 

for all sizes. Therefore, the following section will describe the mounting procedure 

for the GES4 service unit as a representative for all the service units. 

We will draw your attention to items which deviate from the mounting procedure 

for the GES4. 

2. To fix the GES4 service unit in mounting covers of empty underfloor boxes or 

trunkings, you must first remove the hinged cover (1). To do this, move it to the 

vertical position and pull the left-hand side of the cover out of its bearing. 

3. Then insert the carpet protection frame (6) of the service unit into the 

mounting opening (4) and fasten it using the corner screws, which affect the 

clamping angle. In doing so, ensure that the clamping brackets (2) are securely 

located under the mounting cover (3).

9. Mounting of the “round” service units 

The mounting procedure corresponds to that of 

the GES 4 Service unit. However it has the following 

differences: 

a) Fastening of the GESR4 or 

GESR(A)7 Service unit: 

when the hinged cover is open, all the fastening 

screws are accessible. 

b) Fastening the GESR9 Service unit: 

of the six fastening screws, four can be reached 

immediately 

when the hinged cover is open, 

while the two in the hinge area become accessible 

when the hinged cover is pulled forwards towards 

the cord inlet. 

c) GESR4, GESR(A)7, GESR9: 

Removal of lid of circular outlets Open lid (1) and 

overstretch it by more than 90°. Hinge (15) will 

release automatically and lid can be layed down. 

For complete removal of lid, use a screwdriver to 

release the hinge from the frame. Closing the lid: 

Simply close the lid and press on top of it until reaching 

the end position (“click”).

1. Screw the GRAF9 and the mounting box support 

together.

service unit.

permanently elastic sealing compound). 

In the case of service units with a protective floor covering 

frame, ensure that the frame covers the whole of 

the appropriate area. 

3a. With flush-floor installation with a floor covering application 

frame, the opening in the floor covering has a 

diameter of 328 mm. This means that there will be a 

3 mm gap around the service unit for later sealing. 

The application frame must be flush with the top 

edge of the floor covering. Walk-over protection must 

be guaranteed, i.e. the service unit must not be pushed 

downwards by traffic loads. 

3b. When using the DR spacer rings, place two 

rings around each service unit so that the 

floor covering application frame is flat against 

it. Fill the space between the application 

frame and the opening in the floor covering 

(ø 328 mm) with suitable 

sealing material. 


4. Connecting the devices: 

open the rotary lock using a screwdriver or coin and 

the cover of the service unit will spring up. 

Open the service unit cover, push out the Tube from 

below and lock it into the operational position by turning 

it to the left. 

Open the hinged cover of the Tube, pass the conductors 

through and connect the plugs to the devices. 

Close the cover, ensuring that the approved plug 

heights are not exceeded and no conductors are 

crushed. 

The cover engages automatically when lightly pushed. 

Arrange the conductors and close the hinged cover of 

the Tube. 

5. Remove the terminal connection: 

open the rotary lock with a screwdriver or a coin and 

the cover of the service unit will spring up. 

Open the cover of the Service unit. 

Remove the conductors, close the hinged cover of 

the Tube. 

Unlock the Tube by turning it to the right. 

Close the service unit cover and push in the Tube by 

applying slight pressure with your foot. 

The cover and the Tube must be flush against the 

frame to ensure moisture protection. 

Protective measure 

The service unit must be included in one of the 

protective measures against indirect contact. 

According to DIN VDE 0100, the effectiveness 

of the protective measure must be tested and 

proved when an electrical system is installed.
