Fem solide album på åtte år. Det er det ikke mange norske band som kan skryte av. Ikke mange band generelt sett heller. Med 

«Heat» beviser EL CACO at de kan nettopp det. EL CACO følger sin to-års syklus for utgivelser og er i tradisjonen tro klare med 

et nytt forrykende album. Denne gang med ny trommis, og Fredrik Wallumrød er ikke bare en solid forsterkning, han gir bandet 

en ny dimensjon. Maestro Daniel Bergstrand (IN FLAMES, MESHUGGAH etc) har nok en gang sittet i produsentstolen, og med 

splitter nytt studio har «Heat» rett og slett blitt EL CACOs beste og mest velproduserte album noensinne. Og det sier ikke lite. Fra 

åpningen med «The Glow» til avslutningen i «One Week» tre kvarter senere har EL CACO gitt oss en oppvisning i storslagen og 

hardtslående rock. Singelen «Heat Heat» er rett og slett et monster og dukker opp på stadig flere radiolister.

har de tryllet fram 10 herlige låter, der americana-referansene henger tjukkere utenpå enn

William Elliott Whitmore - “More Soulful than a Graveyard” (Daytrotter) - Set to Release Animals 

In The Dark February 16th, 2009. 

From the first lines of “Mutiny,” the opening track on William Elliott Whitmore’s ANTI- Records 

debut Animals In The Dark, one can see that this is decidedly not simply a continuation of 

his Southern trilogy that spanned his last three releases. Rather than a reflection of life and 

loss and the world surrounding his Iowa horse farm on the banks of the Mississippi, “Mutiny” 

finds Whitmore’s focus turned outward, to the state of the country and the missteps of the 

government. 

Yet Animals In The Dark, is by no means a political record. It has more in common with 

the preacher blues of Reverend Gary Davis or the romantic populism of Bruce Springsteen’s 

Nebraska than it does a Billy Bragg record. What Animals In The Dark highlights 

is the maturation and growth of an exemplary artist. On the release, Whitmore showcases 

his classic songwriting and mastery of the acoustic guitar and banjo, but adds elements 

such as strings, an organ and a pedal steel, putting the songs into full arrangements and 

a band context for the first time. The results are a more expansive, cultivated sound, without 

losing any of the palpable soul that has garnered the 30 year old such critical acclaim. 

William Elliott Whitmore naturally bridges the Americana music scene which embraces his 

sound and the Midwestern DIY rock movement which holds him as one of their own. Beginning 

on October 23rd, Whitmore sets out on tour with dark country rockers Murder By Death.

FANTASTIC NEW ALBUM OF BLASTING BLACK METAL FROM NORWAYS FINEST 

THRONE OF KATARSIS was spawned in 2003 in Norway by the demonic visions of Grimnisse 

and Vardalv. Their prophecy was and still is to craft purified and atmospheric occult Black Metal 

in the true vein of the early 90-ties Norwegian Black Metal, and focused on spreading the unholy 

message through their blasphemous lyrics. Their line-up is simple, yet effective: Vardalv 

play the drums and Grimnisse take care of the rest of the instruments. March 2004 the now 

infamous demo recording entitled Unholy Holocaustwinds was unleashed upon the world. There 

were initially only released 40 copies of the demo, but after massive unforeseen response and 

requests the demo has been re-released on pro-printed MC and 10 LP by German Warfront 

Production and on MiniCD by UK based Paradigms Recordings. Unholy Holocaustwinds was 

recorded on a four-track cassette recorder, partly in the Liarlund Forrest. There was also recorded 

a second demo in mid 2004, entitled Blodslakt, but this demo was only handed out to a 

few selected. Blodslakt was never officially released, bearing in mind a future full-length album 

would contain the same material. Late 2004, accompanied by two talented session-musicians 

on bass and guitar, THRONE OF KATARSIS did their first live performance at John Dee, Oslo, 

Norway. Apart from a live gig at the Karmygeddon metal festival, THRONE OF KATARSIS 

spent 2005 focusing on recording their debut full-length. The recording process took place at 

Black Dimension Studio owned and operated by Stein Sund of Thundra. After being offered 

a couple of record-proposals from different labels in 2006, THRONE OF KATARSIS finally 

decided to settle on Candlelight.

Monday 16th February sees the release of Petits Fours, the debut album from GRAND DUCHY, aka 

VIOLET CLARK and BLACK FRANCIS. Featuring 9 tracks, Petits Fours is joint venture between CLARK 

and FRANCIS, rather than a solo FRANCIS project, and contains driving bass lines, a healthy dose 

of synths and some excellent vocals from CLARK, alongside FRANCIS’s trademark guitar squalls. 

“Once upon a time, Violet and I went into the studio together for a day as an experiment, and we came 

out that night with Fort Wayne,” explains FRANCIS. “A leaked version seemed to please others, and so 

we decided to continue the ‘experiment’. We decided that, while we were not expert players on all rock 

ensemble instruments, we would play everything ourselves as we had done on the Fort Wayne session. 

“She was innocent. I hadn’t felt innocent for years. She digs the 80’s. I had spent the latter 

part of the 80’s doing my part to destroy the 80’s. Our second recording session involved 

a fair amount of shouting and throwing things, much to the horror, I’m sure, of our two engineers 

THADDEUS MOORE and JASON CARTER; being pros they just smiled at us. 

“A ‘band’ truce developed. Over time we threw less objects and began to enjoy our creative tension. 

We fantasized about the future, about success, as new bands do, and decided during a drive to the 

studio that we would take any proceeds and make a down payment on a house in Luxembourg (for 

some strange reason, I can’t remember now - perhaps my longstanding obsession with micro states). 

I guess that’s where the name GRAND DUCHY came from. Maybe that’s where we will come from 

one day. Crossroads of Europe. Near to here and there, but far from Oregon. Cold, grey Oregon. 

“I guess Luxembourg isn’t exactly St. Tropez, either. But we could rule our Garage Rock Synth Chick Non- 

Stop Erotik Poussez-Poussez Dominion from a place like that. Just a little place on the river, in the ravine, 

in the trees, in the stars. Our pied-de-terre. A place to stop on our way to your European nite klub.”

CHARLES Spearin, best known for his work with Toronto-based bands Do Make Say 

Think and Broken Social scene, has been performing samples of The Happiness Project 

live during Broken Social Scene concerts this past year, offering insight into the inspiration 

and concept of the album which was arranged, recorded and developed over the past few 

years in his home studio as well working with his long time collaborator Ohad Benchetrit 

at his studio, Th’ Schvitz. 

In the album’s liner notes, Charles took time to write a bit of an explanation on the idea 

behind the project. “These are my neighbours. My wife and I have two little kids and live in 

downtown Toronto.” Spearin explains, “In the summertime, all the kids in the neighbourhood 

play outside together and everyone is out on their porch enjoying each other’s company, 

telling stories and sharing thoughts. A year or so ago I began inviting some of them over to 

the house for a casual interview vaguely centered around the subject of happiness. In some 

cases we never broached the subject directly but none-the-less my friends began to call it 

my “Happiness Project”. “ 

With The Happiness Project, Spearin blurs the line between speaking and singing - life and art 

- and writes music based on these accidental melodies. With the help of some of his musician 

friends, Charles plays the instruments to match these natural neighbourhood melodies inspired 

by thought and happiness and then, as Charles concludes, “I arranged them as though they 

were songs. All of the melodies on this album are the melodies of every day life.”

After the widely acclaimed 2007 album The Flying Club Cup, which hit many album of the year 

lists including the NME, Uncut, Q and The Telegraph, the extremely talented young songwriter 

and musician Zach Condon returns with his third record under the guise of Beirut. The 

full-length album entitled March of the Zapotec is comprised of two EPs. The first, and album 

namesake, is a foray into Mexican folk music with the help of an obscure small-town Mexican 

funeral band. The second is Holland, a bedroom electro-synth pop wonder, originally an idea 

for Zach’s previous incarnation before Beirut, when he went by the name of Realpeople. For 

the past year, Beirut has alternated between touring and writing new material, Zach recording in 

any style that struck his fancy. Some early discussions about doing some soundtrack recording 

for a film being shot in Mexico morphed into a new idea… What about hiring a local Mexican 

band to help record some songs based on new material? After finding the band through a 

friend’s mother, hiring a translator, and catching a plane down to Oaxaca, Zach made his way 

out to the tiny weaver village of Teotitlan del Valle, where he met the nineteen members of The 

Jimenez Band. The ensuing weeks of recording, rewriting and relating are documented in 

a series of short films, which will be released online prior to album release.

ABSU RETURN AFTER A 7 YEAR GAP WITH THEIR STUNNING NEW ALBUM 

American extreme metal royalty returns with their first new studio album in eight years. The selftitled 

recording features the newly expanded quartet with an all-star array of guest musicians. 

Belgian artist Kris Verwimp handled the albums surreal packaging while the sonic aspects were 

directed by the band with mixing controlled by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond, Solitude Aeternus). 

The albums thirteen tracks clock in at nearly an hour, a journey fans have been anxiously awaiting. 

Texas-based Absu came to international prominence with the release of their debut, Barathrum: 

V.I.T.R.I.O.L. in 1992. Originally released via Gothic Records the label later licensed the record 

to Frances Osmose Productions (Immortal, Enslaved, Marduk). Absu would establish a solid 

relationship with the label and thus release all later recordings via the renowned independent, 

including the highly regarded Tara (2001). In 2007 the band would announce a new partnership 

with London-based Candlelight Records. The self-described mythological occult metal, the 

band has consistently draws lyrically from various mythological ideologies. Drummer/vocalist 

Proscriptor notes, “lyrically, I am concentrating more on Sumerian-based occult themes of 

magick and mythology versus the Celtic aspect of my previous writings, which was heavily 

expressed on the last few Absu studio albums. Musically speaking, the material will be quite 

similar to ‘Tara’, but with more of a ‘70s progressive/ psychedelic texture within it.”

DAN AUERBACH – den ene halvdelen av THE BLACK KEYS – går solo på Keep It Hid. En 

oppvisning i sterke låter, inderlig sang og et avhengighetsskapende finurlig gitarspill! 

Keep It Hid was produced and engineered by Auerbach at his studio, Akron Analog, and features 

him playing a variety of instruments, including drums, guitar, percussion, and keyboards. 

Many of Auerbach’s friends and family play on the album, including his uncle James Quine, 

who contributes vocal harmony and electric guitar on the track “Street Walkin.” Other musicians 

include fellow Ohioans Jessica Lea Mayfield, who sings on the track “When the Night 

Comes,” and Bob Cesare, who plays drums on “Whispered Words,” a song originally written 

by Auerbach’s father. Of the recording process Auerbach states, “I wanted a live, organic 

sound. Nothing was too plotted or planned, just a lot of spontaneity.” The record was mixed 

by Auerbach’s good friend Mark Neill at Neill’s Soil of the South studio.

Sebastien Grainger & the Mountains is a record that reflects the majesty its title suggests. Big

At a time when the world’s two biggest rock bands have released their long-awaited, return to 

form albums and the last few years have seen some of the best shows being performed by 

bands who originally formed 20 years ago, Ladyfinger (ne) could not have made a more 

fitting album. Nods and winks to the past meet a sound of the not-toodistant future, and with 

one foot in the sounds of early 70’s classic rock and another in the punk and hardcore scenes 

of the late 80’s and early 90’s, Ladyfinger (ne) bring you Dusk. 

Recorded once again with Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Minus the Bear, Isis), Dusk is 

Ladyfinger (ne) at the peak of their powers. Witness Chris Machmuller’s confidence in 

his vocals grow exponentially and Pat Oakes’ powerhouse drums finding a firmer root to 

propel every snare hit and bass kick. An album clearly born of playing local dives and national 

tours over the last couple of years, Dusk is a statement of intent. The dynamics of each song 

and across the album are more evident, from the opening 1-2 punch of Over and Over and 

the bass growl of ADD, through the sharp riffs and aggressiveness of Work Party, the plaintive 

Plans, and into the hit-in-the-making Let’s Get Married. 

We’re not going to sit around and tell you this is going to save rock and roll. We’ll leave that

Siden ”Cry-Baby” kom ut i oktober 2007, har Ungdomskulen jobbet hardt. De har mellom annet gjort tre turnéer i USA, med spilling på de viktige bransjefestivalene 

CMJ og South by Southwest. De har spilt en treukers supportturne i England med Mercury-nominerte Young Knives, og gjennomført en 

Norgesturne i regi av Rikskonsertene og Alarmprisen. 

Et slikt tempo gir resultater, og selv om Ungdomskulen jobbet hardt med promoteringen av Cry Baby, var ikke det noe hinder mot å begynne å skrive

for et nytt album i 2009. I stedet vart Ungdomskulen inspirert til å jobbe enda hardere, noe som resulterte i at albumet vart ferdigstilt på rekordtid. Fra 

de begynte å skrive låter, til Bisexual var ferdig innspilt hos Jørgen Træen i Duper Studio, gikk det omtrent tre måneder. Den nye plata er en ny retning 

for Ungdomskulen, men det er fortsatt det karakteristiske soundet med forkjærlighet for nye impulser som ligger til grunn. Det klimatiske progrockbandet 

Ungdomskulen er nå klare med sitt andre album Bisexual.

Benjamin Verdoes (vocals, guitar, percussion) hoped to motivate his younger brother 

Marshall to push forward in his drum lessons. Once Marshall got good at drums, Benjamin 

vowed, they’d start a band together, and now-13-year-old Marshall would have naming rights. 

That promise is officially made good with the release of Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band’s 

self-titled debut full-length. 

Co-produced by Scott Colburn (Arcade Fire, Animal Collective), the album at 

first blush recalls Wolf Parade; the band’s frayed melodic sensibilities and Benjamin’s urgent, 

driven vocals in particular. Of course, Wolf Parade borrowed a few ideas from Modest 

Mouse, whose beginnings were indebted to the Pixies. This is the sort of musical lineage 

that creates the foundation for Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band’s debut LP.

“This band is completely based, aesthetically and otherwise, on travelling, on absorbing 

places and regurgitating them in music,” says Handsome Furs’ Dan Boeckner. Face 

Control, the second album by the Montreal band, draws inspiration from Eastern Europe and 

re-maps Eastern Bloc surveillance state themes to contemporary life and the irony of our slow 

acceptance and embrace of self-monitoring, through blogs and facebooks and myspaces and 

credit/debit accounts and surveillance cameras and GPS devices. The album’s juxtaposition 

of cold, metronomic, electronic beats, courtesy of Alexei Perry, with the jagged, dissonant 

and frail, broken or breaking, guitars of Dan Boeckner convey what it is to be a human being 

at the bottom of the 21st century. And, at the same time, provides the means to opt out. Alexei 

Perry and Dan Boeckner wrote the songs on Face Control together. The album was recorded 

and mixed by Arlen Thompson at Mount Zoomer and was mastered by Harris Newman 

at Hotel2Tango.

Halvannet år etter at den kritikerroste EP’en ¡O Bailan Todos O No Baila Nadie! (MKR 010)ble sluppet, 

kommer Sigh & Explode endelig med sin første fullengder. Drøye to uker med hektiske innspillingsdager 

i Harry’s Gym Recording Studio med Bjarne Stensli (120 Days, Surferosa, hiawata!, Harrys Gym) 

bak spakene har resultert i ti spor, fordelt over 32 minutter og 46 sekunder. Mastring er gjort av Björn 

Engelman (The Hives, Dimmu Borgir, Backstreet Boys, Rammstein) hos Cutting Room i Stockholm. 

Bandet har videreutviklet det musikalske uttrykket fra sin forrige utgivelse, med mer variert låtmateriale 

og et større og mer detaljert lydbilde. Det lekes med forskjellige sjangere, og Sigh & Explode står definitivt 

ikke fastlåst i hardcore/screamo-båsen mange velger å putte de i. Gode melodier står i sentrum og er 

pakket inn i soniske gitarer, energiske trommer og skrikevokal. Hørte vi noen si bråkepop? Tja, hvorfor 

ikke. Som om ikke det var nok, så er skiva mikset av Emil Nikolaisen (Serena-Maneesh), noe som

Just in time for their 10-year anniversary, MONO return with their fifth studio album, the absolutely 

massive Hymn To The Immortal Wind. 

After touring almost non-stop for five years, the band hibernated for over a year to focus solely 

on writing Hymn. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and 

arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters 

in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise 

crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The 

instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani 

into their standard facemelting set-up. 

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy 

captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs 

as the orchestra rocks in their seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along 

flutes, and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet opening 

moments 

While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of MONO’s music, the dynamic 

shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance 

these elements so masterfully has become MONO’s strongest virtue.

UK, with long-time producer Mags throughout the second half of 2008. It is the band’s first 

album since re-signing to long-time home Peaceville Records, and looks set to become 

another quality addition to the MDB catalogue, such is the scope of this latest journey into 

the depths of despair.
