The United States Air Force is the<br />

world’s most advanced air, space and<br />

cyberspace force. Most of that can<br />

be attributed to you – our outstanding<br />

Airmen – but technology also plays<br />

a huge role. Advanced tools help<br />

us maintain an advantage over our<br />

adversaries. Technology has enabled<br />

our continuing success.<br />

However, technology also threatens<br />

to cripple us.<br />

As electronic communication<br />

becomes more<br />

widely used, our faceto-face<br />

interaction skills<br />

are beginning to suffer.<br />

We know how to text,<br />

Skype and FaceTime,<br />

but some of us seem<br />

reluctant to engage in a<br />

meaningful face-to-face<br />

conversation.<br />

We value technology<br />

because it saves us<br />

time, provides conveniences<br />

and helps us<br />

be more efficient, but<br />

we must also recognize its potential<br />

to strip us of critical human connection<br />

skills.<br />

This high-tech challenge has a<br />

low-tech solution. We need to strike a<br />

balance; we must continue to emphasize<br />

the importance of technology – a<br />

resource we cannot and will not stop<br />

exploiting – but at the same time<br />

value and emphasize the importance<br />

and value of analog leadership.<br />

Roy advises analog leadership in digital times<br />

time value and emphasize the importance<br />

and value of analog leadership."<br />

Analog leadership means temporarily<br />

putting down the iPads and Android<br />

tablets, logging out of Facebook<br />

and Twitter, and switching phones<br />

to airplane mode to stop the stream<br />

of texts coming in and out. It means<br />

shutting off the technology and talking<br />

to each other.<br />

Face-to-face. One-on-one.<br />

Real human interaction – yes, for<br />

some of us it may be awkward at<br />

first, but getting to know each other<br />

better is an investment that<br />

will yield incalculable returns.<br />

Stronger connections will create<br />

a foundation on which we<br />

can grow more meaningful<br />

relationships.<br />

And then we can turn the<br />

devices back on and use them<br />

for their intended purpose: to<br />

augment and add value to our<br />

real-life relationships.<br />

As Airmen, we have to<br />

understand how to use technology,<br />

because without it<br />

we are not as well-equipped<br />

to do our jobs. However, as human<br />

beings, we also have to understand<br />

how and when not to use technology,<br />

because when distracted by<br />

it we are not as well-equipped to<br />

relate to others.<br />

Public affairs staff consolidates JBSA websites<br />

As the site goes live <strong>July</strong> <strong>20</strong>, an easily accessed,<br />

everything-at-your-fingertips experience is the vision<br />

of the developers of the consolidated Joint<br />

Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> website.<br />

Managed by the 502nd Air Base Wing public affairs<br />

offices, www.jbsa.af.mil is a migration from<br />

three main websites to one.<br />

“The JBSA consolidated website provides our customers<br />

with a 'one stop shop' for all of the installation<br />

support services we provide at all of our JBSA<br />

locations, regardless of service affiliation,” Brig. Gen.<br />

Theresa C. Carter, JBSA and 502nd Air Base Wing<br />

commander, said. “We know our active duty and retired<br />

members live all across the city and we want<br />

them to have a quick and easy way to find the closest<br />

location to obtain a new ID card, the most convenient<br />

chapel service to attend or the date when the next<br />

youth sports league begins. This website and the JBSA<br />

mobile app that we’ll launch soon will be a valuable<br />

resource for both our long-time residents, as well as<br />

our newcomers.”<br />

Joint Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> is the largest of the 12<br />

joint bases created under the Base Realignment and<br />

Closure act of <strong>20</strong>05. JBSA includes three primary<br />

locations at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, JBSA-Lackland<br />

and JBSA-Randolph, plus eight other operating locations<br />

and more than <strong>20</strong>0 mission partners. There are<br />

more than 80,000 JBSA employees.<br />

“It’s the right thing to do,” Marilyn Holliday, JBSA-<br />

Randolph public affairs director, said. “We became a<br />

single installation Oct. 1, <strong>20</strong>10, but our presence in<br />

cyberspace on our public and private web sites did<br />

not keep pace with that change and our customers<br />

found it confusing, particularly those who are new<br />

to our JBSA locations. To see the consolidation of<br />

efforts come to fruition is a huge step forward for<br />

us. Our goal is to always leverage communication<br />

capabilities to provide the highest quality service for<br />

our customers.”<br />

The site will include featured articles from<br />

all three newspapers, JBSA-Fort Sam Houston’s<br />

<strong>News</strong> Leader, JBSA-Lackland’s Talespinner and<br />

JBSA-Randolph’s Wingspread. The consolidated<br />

effort will also feature Force Support Squadron<br />

and Morale Welfare and Recreation events, environmental<br />

information, chapel schedules, newcomers’<br />

data and chains of command.<br />

Information for all three locations will be<br />

housed in a more consolidated fashion on the new<br />

website, most times pared down to the particular<br />

location in JBSA. The site also features a complete<br />

listing of website and social media links for<br />

all of its mission partners.<br />

takes reins<br />

AF Academy senior embraces C3,<br />

earns Green Belt certification<br />

Air Education and Training Command Public Affairs<br />

An Air Force Academy cadet spent five<br />

weeks, as part of a summer program,<br />

with Air Education and Training Command’s<br />

Chief Learning Office where he<br />

earned his Green Belt certification.<br />

A Green Belt is the first level of certification<br />

under Air Force Smart Operations<br />

for the 21st Century, which is a<br />

model used to maximize efficiency and<br />

effectiveness by minimizing waste in<br />

key processes across the Air Force.<br />

For a business major at the academy,<br />

working with AFSO21 is not a typical<br />

summer project. Cadet 1st Class Michael<br />

Smith Jr. got the idea to pursue the opportunity<br />

from his dad, a retired Air Force<br />

officer who worked with AFSO21. Smith<br />

is the first cadet to obtain a Green Belt<br />

certification before entering active duty.<br />

As a Green Belt, Smith is now qualified<br />

to facilitate squadron- and group-level<br />

process improvement events.<br />

Smith’s sponsor, Maj. Brian Tharp,<br />

AETC/CLO officer, said with the Air Force’s<br />

evolving culture of cost consciousness, or<br />

“It’s our hope site visitors will enjoy a selfguided<br />

tour of Joint Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>’s locations<br />

and missions,” 2nd Lt. Matthew <strong>San</strong>ders, site developer<br />

and deputy chief for JBSA-Randolph Public<br />

Affairs, said.<br />

As part of the vetting process, more than 100<br />

Army, Navy and Air Force members, government<br />

service employees and family members across all<br />

three primary JBSA locations were given the opportunity<br />

to provide feedback.<br />

“We received a wide range of comments during<br />

feedback sessions, such as change the website’s<br />

color scheme to reflect a more joint service feel,<br />

include more photos and social media links and<br />

make sure acronyms used are recognized by all<br />

military branches,” Holliday said. “Overall, the<br />

comments received were extremely positive.<br />

We’re confident that we came up with a balanced<br />

product that will serve JBSA well.”<br />

Prominently featured on the new site is a feedback<br />

section, which allows visitors to make suggestions<br />

for the site, ensuring it remains relevant, valuable<br />

and a highly-used source of information.<br />

“As with any website, we expect the site to continuously<br />

evolve and we welcome feedback from<br />

everyone,” <strong>San</strong>ders said. “The site’s purpose is to<br />

provide a communications tool for all of JBSA.”<br />

In addition to the website, the public affairs office<br />

is finalizing a JBSA mobile app that is expected to<br />

launch in August <strong>20</strong>12.

JBSA members benefit from anger management course<br />

Joint Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> offers an anger management<br />

course called Building Effective Anger Management<br />

Skills every six weeks at Fort Sam Houston<br />

and every other month alternating between Randolph<br />

and Lackland.<br />

Anyone with a Department of Defense ID can enroll<br />

in BEAMS.<br />

“We talk about changing our thoughts from thinking<br />

negatively to thinking positively (in response to what<br />

triggers anger) and learn that while we can’t control<br />

other people’s behavior, we can control how we react,”<br />

Stacy Drones, Warfighter Family Life Program educator,<br />

said.<br />

The course also addresses specific stressors that cause<br />

bouts of anger – or even deep-seated anger unique to<br />

the individual.<br />

Bob Harry, Warfighter Family Life Program manager,<br />

said the course is not designed to be therapeutic,<br />

but rather proactive in helping participants<br />

recognize what triggers their anger and how they<br />

should positively manage it.<br />

However, Ashley Duran, Warfighter Family Life<br />

Program educator, who is currently teaching the<br />

course at Randolph, said some class attendees do<br />

find solace on a therapeutic level by simply talking<br />

about their situation.<br />

Talking about issues can help peel back layers to<br />

discover where they came from.<br />

“It’s important that people reflect where their anger<br />

style came from,” Harry said. “Family history, like the<br />

way your parents reacted when they became angry, can<br />

be very telling and hit the root cause of an issue.”<br />

Gender and cultural differences are also factors that<br />

distinguish where anger stems in individuals.<br />

“Women traditionally tend to lash out or talk about<br />

it then and there, whereas men tend to withdraw and<br />

internalize,” Drones said.<br />

But Harry said the stereotypes of the past are not<br />

necessarily applicable because many roles have been<br />

reversed; women are leaders in the professional sector<br />

and it’s OK for dads to stay at home.<br />

“Men are still less apt to talk,” he said, but during the<br />

course many participants open up to each other.<br />

In fact, “men are my biggest talkers in the room,”<br />

Drones said.<br />

“The community aspect of the class can be a catalyst<br />

for growth,” Duran said.<br />

Trust builds rapport among participants and instructors,<br />

becoming a major contributor to the success of the<br />

course, Duran added.<br />

The other way success is gauged is through the willingness<br />

of attendees to perform exercises that help calm<br />

their anger, Harry said.<br />

“We have tools available that help recognize physiological<br />

and emotional responses to anger – be it a<br />

rise in heart beat or poor verbiage,” he said. “Everyone<br />

shows anger differently, but there are universal<br />

signs as well.”<br />

There are also some universal de-stressors that can<br />

be used to diffuse anger-inducing moments.<br />

“Stepping back from a stressful situation, disengaging<br />

for a moment and taking deep breaths” are a few tips<br />

Harry offered.<br />

But one tip in particular can “make” – or rather save<br />

– relationships with family members, friends and loved<br />

ones when used.<br />

“Think about what you say before speaking,” Harry<br />

said. “Words are a powerful thing that can hurt people<br />

and when you’re angry, you say a lot of things you normally<br />

wouldn’t; you can’t really take back the words<br />

you spoke.”<br />

An important lesson the class teaches is “every action<br />

has a consequence – good or bad,” Duran said.<br />

While understanding what causes anger is much of<br />

the mystery class members might struggle with during<br />

the course, their actions that follow onsets of anger are<br />

points of focus.<br />

“There are constructive things to do to calm down like<br />

working out and listening to music,” Drones said.<br />

And then there is the other side.<br />

“There are also destructive activities like drinking and<br />

shopping sprees that we teach participants to avoid,”<br />

Harry said.<br />

Ultimately, anger is not a bad thing; it can be managed<br />

and displayed positively, Duran said.<br />

“Assertive rather than aggressive anger can lead to<br />

positive action,” Harry said. “It can be an initiator like<br />

some of the reactions to social injustices in the 1960s<br />

– nonviolent movements that changed the social conscience<br />

of the world.”<br />

TRICARE officials report lottery sweepstakes scam<br />

The TRICARE Program Integrity Office has<br />

become aware of a lottery sweepstakes scam<br />

where “winners” receive a fraudulent check<br />

with the TRICARE name.<br />

Targeted individuals are contacted by mail<br />

with a letter stating they are winners of a<br />

USA lottery sweepstakes accompanied with a<br />

fraudulent check for $250,000.<br />

The letter states that the check is a portion of<br />

the winnings used to help pay taxes, insurance,<br />

handling and shipping fees. The winner is then<br />

asked to return a portion of the funds from the<br />

cashed check.<br />

TRICARE beneficiaries who receive this lottery<br />

sweepstakes scam letter and check are<br />

encouraged to report the scam to the Managed<br />

Care Support Contractor Program Integrity<br />

Office – Health Net Federal Services, Humana<br />

Military Healthcare Services, TriWest Healthcare<br />

Alliance, Express Scripts Inc., or Wisconsin<br />

Physician Services.<br />

Reports can also be made to the TRICARE Program<br />

Integrity Office by emailing “TRICARE Fraudline” at<br />

fraudline@tma.osd.mil or faxed to 303-676-3981.

C3, it is becoming increasingly important<br />

for future and new leaders to grasp an<br />

understanding about conserving resources<br />

and improving processes.<br />

AFSO21 uses an eight-step problem<br />

solving process: clarify and validate<br />

the problem, break down the problem<br />

and identify performance gaps,<br />

set improvement targets, determine<br />

root cause, develop countermeasures,<br />

see countermeasures through, confirm<br />

results and process, and standardize<br />

successful processes.<br />

Smith has already applied the AFSO21<br />

model to real-world Green Belt-level<br />

events designed to save Airmen time at<br />

the work-center level. The solutions developed<br />

during these two events are designed<br />

to reduce the amount of time it<br />

takes an Airman to find data on a shared<br />

drive and reduce the time required to<br />

complete civilian time cards.<br />

As a result of just two events, more<br />

than 140 hours per year will be returned<br />

to the shop’s Airmen. Hamm<br />

noted while 140 hours per year might<br />

not seem like much, when continuous<br />

improvement becomes a part of every<br />

Airman’s skill set, there will be more<br />

events and savings.<br />

During the summer program, Smith<br />

completed 40 hours of Green Belt<br />

academics hosted by the 12th Flying<br />

Training Wing here. He also observed<br />

two process improvement events at the<br />

59th Medical Wing to solve issues of<br />

missed physical therapy and specialty<br />

clinic appointments by basic military<br />

trainees. Additionally, Smith witnessed<br />

continuous process improvement at a<br />

local industry in <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>.<br />

Smith, who’s entering his senior<br />

year at the Academy, plans to carry<br />

his AFSO21 experience into active duty<br />

once he graduates and hopes to pursue<br />

a Black Belt certification, which will<br />

allow him to facilitate wing-level and<br />

higher AFSO21 events.<br />

He said now that he’s done with all<br />

of the training, it gives him the ground<br />

work he’ll need to further build upon<br />

his experience.<br />

“I think of anything I could have<br />

done a summer research project on,<br />

(AFSO21) is going to be the most relevant<br />

and applicable to my career in<br />

the Air Force,” Smith said.<br />

Everything he’s done and seen with the<br />

CLO for the past five weeks has helped<br />

him see the “big picture,” Smith said. He<br />

hopes to make an impact in whatever<br />

career field he gets placed in.<br />

“From now on, budget constraints<br />

are going to be a big issue,” he said.<br />

“That’s one of those things I’ll be able<br />

to help with.”<br />

Tharp said AFSO21 training can<br />

help Smith and other cadets become<br />

better leaders.<br />

“We look forward to helping more<br />

cadets during future summer research<br />

programs,” Tharp said.<br />

President seeks cost-cutting ideas through SAVE award<br />

U.S. Air Force:<br />

The White House continues to<br />

challenge federal employees to identify<br />

areas where we can save scarce<br />

taxpayer dollars while improving the<br />

way the government works. President<br />

Obama believes the best ideas usually<br />

come from the front lines and in <strong>20</strong>09<br />

launched the Securing Americans Value<br />

and Efficiency Award to seek ideas<br />

from federal employees about how we<br />

can make government more efficient<br />

and effective.<br />

Over the past three years, federal<br />

employees have submitted more than<br />

75,000 cost-cutting ideas through<br />

the SAVE award. Dozens of the most<br />

promising ideas have been included<br />

in the president’s budget, including<br />

some noteworthy Air Force submissions.<br />

I thank the many Airmen who<br />

participated in prior years and encourage<br />

you to take time to consider and<br />

submit good ideas this year as well.<br />

Tuesday deadline if you would like to<br />

submit an idea. You will see award criteria<br />

and prior year award, winning<br />

present his or her idea to the president<br />

for possible inclusion in the next<br />

budget.<br />

Our most valuable resource is our<br />

talented and innovative military and<br />

civilian workforce. At a time when<br />

the nation continues to face fiscal and<br />

economic challenges, it’s all the more<br />

important that we work together to get<br />

the maximum combat capability out of<br />

each dollar the taxpayers entrust to<br />

us – every good idea matters.<br />

19th Air Force inactivates, commander retires<br />

Nineteenth Air Force stood down in<br />

an inactivation ceremony at Joint Base<br />

<strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>-Randolph, Texas, <strong>July</strong> 12<br />

after more than 19 years of managing<br />

flying training for all of Air Education<br />

and Training Command.<br />

During the ceremony, Maj. Gen.<br />

Mark Solo, 19th AF commander, joined<br />

Gen. Edward Rice, AETC commander,<br />

in furling and casing the 19th Air Force<br />

flag, marking Solo’s relinquishment of<br />

command.<br />

Rice lauded Solo and the men and<br />

women of 19th Air Force for their role<br />

in ensuring a smooth transition of authorities<br />

from 19th AF to AETC while<br />

still executing the daily mission.<br />

“In the two years of General Solo’s<br />

command, they’ve done much more<br />

than prepare for the inactivation,” Rice<br />

said. “Nineteenth Air Force led the<br />

stand up of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter<br />

school house and the Air Force’s<br />

only undergraduate remotely piloted<br />

aircraft training program for pilots and<br />

sensor operators. The unit also activated<br />

student squadrons, streamlining<br />

the administrative control of the nearly<br />

1,400 student pilots who begin training<br />

each year.<br />

“The team did all this while maintaining<br />

its day-to-day flying training<br />

missions, which accounts for 47 percent<br />

of the Air Force’s total flying hour<br />

program,” Rice said.<br />

Following his remarks, Rice presented<br />

Solo and 19th Air Force with<br />

the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award<br />

for its accomplishments between <strong>July</strong><br />

1, <strong>20</strong>09 and June 30, <strong>20</strong>11.<br />

Echoing Rice’s pride in 19th AF’s accomplishments,<br />

Solo said he was most<br />

proud that its mission of a successful<br />

stand down had been accomplished.<br />

“When I took command of 19th Air<br />

Force two years ago, I knew I was<br />

coming to Randolph with the goal of<br />

closing down the unit and ensuring<br />

a seamless transition of our many<br />

operations directly into AETC,” Solo<br />

said. “With careful planning, coordination<br />

and herculean efforts from the<br />

men and women at the wings, 19th<br />

The stand down of 19th AF is a part<br />

of Secretary of the Air Force Michael<br />

Donley’s <strong>20</strong>11 call for the inactivation<br />

of three numbered air forces and the<br />

consolidation of their duties to other<br />

units. In addition to the inactivation<br />

of 19th Air Force, 13th Air Force<br />

at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam,<br />

Hawaii, will inactivate in September.<br />

The 17th Air Force at Ramstein Air<br />

Base, Germany, inactivated earlier<br />

this year.<br />

The inactivation also serves as Solo’s<br />

final Air Force career accomplishment;<br />

the general retires <strong>July</strong> 13 after more<br />

than three decades of service.<br />

“As I reflect back on over 33 years<br />

of service in our Air Force, I am reminded<br />

of the many dedicated officers,<br />

NCOs, Airmen and civilians<br />

who have molded my career and enriched<br />

our lives,” Solo said. “I have<br />

watched our Air Force go through<br />

many changes over the years, but<br />

our Airmen have sealed our reputation<br />

Airmen awarded Silver Stars at special ceremony<br />

and rescue pilots received the Silver<br />

Star medal at the 19th Air Force’s inactivation<br />

ceremony <strong>July</strong> 12 at Joint<br />

Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>-Randolph.<br />

the third highest military decoration to<br />

Maj. Philip Bryant and Maj. Joshua Hallada<br />

for their participation in a recovery<br />

mission of two U.S. Army pilots who were<br />

downed in the Allasay Valley, an enemy<br />

controlled area east of Bagram Airfield,<br />

Afghanistan April 23, <strong>20</strong>11.<br />

According to the citations, Hallada<br />

and Bryant distinguished themselves<br />

“by gallantry in connection with military<br />

operations against an opposing<br />

armed force,” while leading HH-60G<br />

Pavehawk rescue helicopters to recover<br />

downed U.S. Army pilots.<br />

“The people who do this mission are<br />

not common people,” Rice said, citing<br />

combat search and rescue member’s<br />

commitment to leave no one behind,<br />

and ability to demonstrate “valor in<br />

the face of the enemy.”<br />

Hallada’s team inserted pararescue<br />

teams, while taking enemy small arms fire<br />

that damaged the aircraft and seriously<br />

injured his flight engineer. After directing<br />

his wingman to return to base, Hallada<br />

flew multiple weapons passes, defending<br />

his teams on the ground and killing at<br />

least one insurgent. Hallada used overhead<br />

AH-64D Apache attack weapons<br />

teams as cover to attempt rescue of his<br />

teams and the distressed pilots.<br />

During the rescue, enemy fire disabled<br />

the aircraft hoist, causing Hallada<br />

to execute a one-wheel landing to<br />

recover one of his two teams and one<br />

of the downed pilots. Hallada then took<br />

heavy fire, that caused severe damage<br />

to his aircraft. Hallada continued<br />

to provide cover for his team members<br />

and the remaining pilot still at<br />

the crash site. He then transferred his<br />

crew to a fresh aircraft and directed<br />

his formation back to the crash site.<br />

“We were just getting it done,” Hallada<br />

said. “We look at it as our job; this<br />

is why we’re here. And we do it on the<br />

backs of our crews. Our crews were the<br />

Bryant’s aircraft was engaged by<br />

enemy fire that seriously wounded<br />

his flight engineer and caused severe<br />

damage to flight control systems of<br />

the aircraft. Bryant maneuvered to<br />

escape and assessed the flight engineer’s<br />

injury and immediately directed<br />

his aircraft back to base, in order<br />

for the injured engineer to receive life<br />

saving medical care.<br />

After obtaining a replacement crew<br />

member, Bryant rejoined the fight and<br />

attempted extraction of one of the isolated<br />

pilots and team who were now<br />

pinned down by enemy fire.<br />

His aircraft was engaged from both<br />

sides, with rounds striking two of his<br />

crew members and missing his own head<br />

by inches. Bryant then coordinated with<br />

AH-64D Apache attack weapons teams<br />

to cover a single ship rescue. His aircraft<br />

was once again targeted and received<br />

heavy enemy rounds.<br />

Hallada and Bryant led their aircraft<br />

back to the crash site five more times<br />

into enemy fire, and ultimately recovered<br />

the downed pilots, the pararescue<br />

teams and a soldier critically wounded<br />

in the effort.<br />

“There are so many other stories besides<br />

ours,” Bryant said. “It’s a tremendous<br />

honor [to receive the Silver Star].<br />

I’m very honored and humbled, but we<br />

never would have accomplished the mission<br />

without our attack assets.”<br />

Civilians contribute to Roth options<br />

members to contribute on an<br />

after-tax basis and receive tax-free<br />

from their TSP accounts.<br />

Air Force serviced civilians may make<br />

elections through the Employee Benefits<br />

Information System, which can be accessed<br />

through the myPers website at<br />

https://mypers.af.mil. Elections made on<br />

or before June 30 were effective <strong>July</strong><br />

1 and will be reflected on the <strong>July</strong> <strong>20</strong><br />

Leave and Earnings Statement.<br />

Civilians may contribute to traditional<br />

and Roth TSP accounts as long as<br />

they do not exceed the elective deferral<br />

limit. Agency automatic and matching<br />

contributions must continue to be tax<br />

deferred and will be deposited as regular<br />

TSP contributions.<br />

Roth TSP elective deferral limits<br />

are $17,000 for regular contributions<br />

and $5,500 for catch-up contributions,<br />

which is identical to traditional TSP limits.<br />

The Roth TSP is not the same as<br />

a Roth Individual Retirement Account.<br />

In some instances, contributing to the<br />

Roth TSP may make a civilian ineligible<br />

to contribute to a Roth IRA because of<br />

income limitations.<br />

A sport like running might<br />

seem simple from afar, but it’s<br />

surprising how many factors<br />

contribute to possibly turning<br />

a successful workout into a<br />

detrimental activity.<br />

Along with proper technique,<br />

things such as foot type, shoe selection,<br />

training, injury prevention,<br />

self treatment and effective<br />

stretching, warming up and cooling<br />

down all play a big part in<br />

having a profitable run.<br />

Anyone with access to Joint<br />

Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>-Randolph<br />

and its facilities, is welcome to<br />

attend the Running Improvement<br />

Workshop at the Health<br />

and Wellness Center to learn<br />

all of these vital tips.<br />

“The running improvement<br />

program is offered once<br />

a month and is designed to<br />

help beginner to intermediate<br />

runners improve their skills,”<br />

Kimberly Houk, HAWC exercise<br />

physiologist, said. “We<br />

discuss running program design<br />

and progression, running<br />

form and equipment. I assist<br />

with appropriate footwear<br />

evaluation and recommendations,<br />

as well as go to a gait<br />

analysis and make recommendations<br />

for improvement<br />

in running form.”<br />

training manager, attended the<br />

workshop because he wanted<br />

to better himself by learning<br />

the correct way to run.<br />

“I think it is important because<br />

with so much emphasis<br />

on physical training, you want<br />

to make sure you get everything<br />

out of the way you run,”<br />

he said. “I learned that good<br />

form is one of the most important<br />

aspects of running.”<br />

In order for people to excel<br />

in their running capabilities,<br />

it is integral for them to<br />

build a strong foundation using<br />

healthy and proper techniques.<br />

While some people have conditioned<br />

themselves to be able<br />

to run nearly every day, Houk<br />

recommends people run three<br />

times per week.<br />

“Activities such as cycling,<br />

elliptical machines, swimming<br />

and other similar cardiovascular<br />

exercise methods are<br />

good to mix between running<br />

days,” Houk said. “Thirty to<br />

45 minutes per session are<br />

recommended for cardiovascular<br />

activity.”<br />

Although it’s important to<br />

decide to start working out<br />

and running, it is just as important<br />

to make the decision<br />

not to quit.<br />

“I like helping people achieve<br />

their health goals,” she said.<br />

“Whether it’s teaching a class<br />

or working individually with<br />

people, I know there’s a way I<br />

can help them to get better.”<br />
