In His Image Faith Enrichment for Adult Catholics
A Program of Renewal Through Education
In His Image is a serious program of renewal through education. It is
designed to challenge adult Catholics to enrich their faith by taking
advantage of several of God’s gifts: Scripture, prayer, Church teaching,
and community.
In His Image, like the Faith itself, centers on the love of God made
manifest in Jesus Christ. As true God he reveals God to us; as true man he
reveals us to ourselves and makes clear our vocation to share God’s life in
community. Renewal of the Church is simply a question of deepening our
In His Image
life in Christ, discovering him in the fullness of revelation and experiencing
him as our every thing and only thing (Colossians 3:11).
For Greater Glory E
The Cristero War and Mexico’s
Struggle for Religious Freedom
Ruben Quezada
Foreword by Archbishop José Gomez
Introduction by Eduardo Verástegui
Bonus Essay by Carl Anderson
ALSO AVAILABLE
IN SPANISH
Many people of faith today are asking, “What is
the price of religious liberty?” In the 1920’s many
Catholics in Mexico answered this crucial question at the
cost of their very lives. The new major motion picture,
For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada tells the epic
tale of Mexico’s heroic struggle for religious freedom in
a little-known conflict called the Cristero War—but many
questions still remain. Now you’ll go much deeper into
the exciting history behind the movie with this fact-filled
Official Companion book—and gain important insight into
the on-going fight for religious freedom today.
Lavishly illustrated with both photos from the movie
and historical photos. Includes Cristero Prayers in
English and Spanish, plus both encyclicals of Pope Pius
XI from 1926 and 1932 about the attack on religious freedom
in Mexico.
Also available in Spanish (Spanish title: Cristiada: La
Guerra Cristera Y El Conflicto En México Por La Libertad
Religiosa).
As you read you’ll discover:
• Who were the Cristeros?
• What drove the Mexican government to ruthlessly persecute
Catholics?
• Can a priest “wage war”
• What role did groups like the Knights of Columbus play
in this armed resistance?
• Why did thousands of Catholics—priests, religious, lay
people—willingly give their lives in the Cristiada?
• What role did the U.S. play in ending this bitter conflict?
• What did the Pope do to support the Church in Mexico?
• Which characters in the movie went on to become
Catholic saints and blesseds in real life?
• Why is this dramatic episode of history so little known
today?
• What is the lesson of the Cristiada for those struggling
for religious freedom today?
“For Greater Glory is a top-flight production whose message
of the importance of religious freedom has particular
resonance for us today.” — Most Reverend José Gomez,
NEW SUMMER BOOKS
The Autobiography
of a Hunted Priest
John Gerard, S.J.
Foreword by James V. Schall, S.J.
Truth is stranger than fiction. And nowhere
in literature is it so apparent as in this classic
work, The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest. This
autobiography of a Jesuit priest in Elizabethan
England is a most remarkable document and John
Gerard, its author, a most remarkable priest in a
time when to be a Catholic in England courted
imprisonment and torture; to be a priest was treason
by act of Parliament.
Smuggled into England after his ordination and
dumped on a Norfolk beach at night, Fr. Gerard
disguised himself as a country gentleman and traveled
about the country saying Mass, preaching and
ministering to the faithful in secret—always in constant
danger. The houses in which he found shelter
were frequently raided by “priest hunters”; priestholes,
hide-outs and hair-breadth escapes were
part of his daily life. He was finally caught and
imprisoned, and later removed to the infamous
Tower of London where he was brutally tortured.
The stirring account of his escape, by means of a
rope thrown across the moat, is a daring and magnificent
climax to a true story which, for sheer narrative
power and interest, far exceeds any fiction.
But more than the story of a single priest, The
Autobiography of a Hunted Priest epitomizes the
constant struggle of all human beings through
the ages to maintain their freedom. It is a book of
courage and of conviction whose message is most
timely for our age.
“In my early years in the Society of Jesus, I recall
that this book was read at table... On first listening
to it, the book also struck me as describing a persecution
of Catholics that could not happen here. One
is no longer quite so sure. It may, in fact, be a very
up-to-date book in its own way.”
— James V. Schall, S.J., from the Foreword
the ignatius critical editions
The Confessions E
Saint Augustine of Hippo
Edited by Fr. David Meconi, S.J.
Translated by Sr. Maria Boulding, O.S.B.
One of the greatest works of all time, Augustine’s
Confessions is a pillar of Western thought.
Essential reading for anyone studying theology
or philosophy, it is also the first Western autobiography
ever written. The Confessions combines
personal experience with a profound study of the
Scriptures in an effort to reconcile the reality of
evil with the goodness of God and his creation.
Writing in the fourth century, Augustine—philosopher,
rhetorician, theologian, and bishop—gave
the world not only its most complete account of a
man living in the late Roman Empire, but a spiritual
classic that for centuries has helped countless
souls heed the mysterious call of Christ. Sr. Maria
Boulding’s acclaimed translation is considered by
many Augustine experts as the most beautiful and
accurate modern translation of the Confessions.
Fr. David Meconi, S.J. is a Professor of Patristics at
Saint Louis University, where he teaches courses on
Trinitarian theology, Christology, and soteriology in
the early Church. A scholar of the life and thought
of Augustine of Hippo, he is the author of The One
Christ: Augustine’s Theology of Deification (Catholic
University of America Press) as well as the co-editor
of the Cambridge University Companion to Augustine.
Fr. Meconi is also the editor of Homiletic and
Pastoral Review, online at HPRweb.com.
Real Love Updated and Expanded Edition E
Mary Beth Bonacci
Mary Beth Bonacci has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people across
the country and around the world—about relationships, about marriage,
about God’s plan for sexuality, and about finding real, honest love. And they
speak back to her. They ask her questions—about sex, about dating, about marriage,
about their struggles to live love. In this newly updated and expanded
edition of Real Love, Mary Beth shares those questions—and her answers—in
an even more comprehensive guide which addresses the details of the very real
struggle we all face in trying to live real love in a world gone mad.
Mary Beth offers a comprehensive catechesis of the Church’s teaching in
the areas of marriage and human sexuality. She tackles the toughest issues—
premarital sex, contraception, divorce, homosexuality, internet pornography
and others. And throughout it all, she demonstrates that living respect for
God’s gift of sexuality is the way—the only way—to find real, honest love.
To Save a Thousand Souls
A Guide for Discerning a Vocation to Diocesan Priesthood
Rev. Brett Brannen
To Save a Thousand Souls: A Guide for Discerning a Vocation to Diocesan
Priesthood is the definitive guide for men considering the priesthood.
Using powerful and entertaining stories, the book explains in down-toearth
language how to carefully discover God’s call.
To Save a Thousand Souls has been bulk-ordered by over 100 U.S. dioceses,
and has become the standard “catechism for discernment” throughout
the country.
Readers are enthusiastic in their praise for To Save a Thousand Souls,
saying it is easy to read and answers almost all their questions about
discerning their vocation. Many young men who have read the book have
gone on to enter seminary.
“This is an outstanding book, specifically for diocesan priests and those
concerned with their work and spirituality. ”
— Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R.
“This is the best book-length treatment of discerning a priestly vocation
I’ve seen. In particular, Fr. Brannen’s treatment of celibacy is balanced and
comprehensive. The book portrays the priesthood honestly and attractively,
clearly expressing that faithfully living an authentic priestly vocation is
an exhilarating, fulfilling, and joyful life.”
Family Guide
for users of the Faith and Life catechetical series
New this year, the Family Guide (Vol A – Grades 1-4; Vol B
– Grades 5-8) is a wonderful tool for parents to be directly
involved in a personal, interactive way with their child’s faith
formation. The new Family Guide is written specifically for parents
of children using the Faith and Life Third Edition catechetical
series.
These attractive four color volumes are a perfect way for parents
to be more fully engaged with forming their child’s faith
during the upcoming Year of Faith (Oct 2012 – Nov 2013). The
easy to follow, simple format of the new Family Guide, allows any
parent to interact weekly with their child to review the main lesson
points of the week, whether the child attends class at school,
church or at home. The format is simple, straight forward and
consistent, so any parent, regardless of formation can use it.
In fact, with student textbook references and crossreferencing
of the main lesson points to the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
the new Family Guide also allows parents to deepen their own
understanding of the essential elements of faith being taught, another
reason for parents to buy this and use it during the Year of
Faith and beyond. Parents are called to be the main educators of
their children. What better way than to learn with your child so
that student and parent alike will deepen their knowledge and
understanding of the Catholic faith together.
The Faith and Life Third Edition catechetical series is used in
schools and parishes Grades 1-8 and consists of a student textbook,
activity book and teacher’s manual for each grade level.
Widely popular with homeschooling families, Faith and Life provides
a clear and substantial presentation of the teaching of Christ
in an attractive full color layout. The Faith and Life series is also
available in an online curriculum format in both English and
Spanish at www.mycatholicfaithdelivered.com.
Lesson Focus | Heaven is God’s home. It is a place of perfect happiness. If we spend our lives
loving God and others, we will go to Heaven when we die and be happy there forever with God.
Jesus made that possible. When He died on the Cross, He opened Heaven’s gates to man. When we
make the Sign of the Cross, we remember what Jesus did. We also remember that there are three
Divine Persons in God. At Mass, Jesus is truly present, as are the angels and saints, who come to
pray and worship Jesus with us. During Mass, Heaven comes to earth.
1 | begin
Pray the Glory Be with your child.
Describe to your child a favorite place (e.g., a home, a park, a city, etc.).
Tell him why you love it and what fun things you did there. If possible,
show him a picture.
Read John 14:2–3 aloud.
2 | summarize
Summarize this week’s lesson for your child:
Example: As wonderful as my favorite place is, Heaven is even more wonderful.
Heaven is God’s home. All the angels and saints live with Him there and are happy
forever. If we love God, someday we too will live in Heaven with Him.
3 | review
Review this week’s lesson by asking your child the following questions:
1. Where does God our Father live? (In Heaven.)
2. Who lives in Heaven with God? (The angels and the saints.)
3. Is there any sadness in Heaven? (No.)
4. After we die, if we love God, what will happen to us? (We will go to live in
Heaven with God forever.)
5. How do Catholics begin and end prayer? (With the Sign of the Cross.)
6. Of what two things does the Sign of the Cross remind us? (Jesus opened the
gates of Heaven when He died on the Cross, and God is three Divine Persons.)
7. When does Heaven come to earth? (During Mass.)
4 | apply
Help your child apply this week’s lesson by asking the following questions:
1. What is your favorite place? How will Heaven be like that? How will it
be better?
2. What are some sad things that happen to you now that won’t happen in
Heaven?
3. What good things can you do now that will help you get to Heaven
someday?
5 | conclude
With your child, pray the Our Father.
6 | follow up
During the week, do at least one of the following activities with your child:
1. Before meals, let your child begin family prayers with the Sign of the
Cross.
2. Help your child draw a picture of himself with God in Heaven.
Encourage him to include images of the other people and things he hopes
will be there.
3. On Sunday, go to Mass fifteen minutes early. Walk around the church
with your child and help him find images of saints and angels. Tell him
that those images are there to remind him of the real angels and saints
who are present at Mass.
Why Catholicism Matters How Catholic Virtues
Can Reshape Society in the 21st Century
Bill Donohue
Always willing to speak his mind and put up the good fight, Bill
Donohue, the president of the Catholic League, reminds readers of
the great wealth of charity and wisdom that exists in the Catholic tradition.
In Why Catholicism Matters, he explores the four Cardinal Virtues—
Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance—and shows us how the
Church’s best attributes can be applied to solve many of the biggest problems
society must confront today and in the future. From questions of liberty
and freedom, to the use of contraception and abortion, to the need for
courage in age of terrorism and religious intolerance, Donohue examines
how goodness and morality can affect the world in the centuries to come.
“A fresh and compelling look at how the teachings of the Catholic
Church continue to provide the best guide for a healthy, happy society. It
reveals that the Church gives an emphatic YES! to all that is good, noble
and uplifting in the human person.”
Jesus-Shock Peter Kreeft
This work investigates the reception Jesus received in his lifetime and
continuously to the present time, not only from his enemies, but from his
friends, a reception of shock, astonishment, even disgust. The main question
of this book focuses on: Why is “Jesus” the most non-neutral, the most controversial,
the most embarrassing name in the world?
What was the bitterest controversy of the Protestant Reformation, between
Protestants and Catholics and also between different Protestant denominations,
the one that had both sides calling the other not just heretics but devils?
Answer: It was about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. God
truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus-Shock, in addressing this controversy
forcefully and faithfully, shows the reasons why to this day the name of
“Jesus” stirs up controversy, even revulsion, in polite society. In the true spirit
of ecumenism, it also points the way toward a true rapprochement among
His modern-day disciples.
Lord of the World A Novel by Robert Hugh Benson
Introduction by Ralph McInerny
In this profound and prescient novel, Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson presents
an imaginative foretelling of the end of the world. All stories, Aristotle
said, have a beginning, a middle, and an end, but most ends are relative, the
terminus of a chain of acts. But what about the end that terminates all human
action, the end of time, the Second Coming? Since this novel appeared in
1906, many others have been devoted to nuclear disaster, destructive comets,
and other hair-raising possibilities. What sets Benson’s story apart and makes
it as readable today as when it was written is the Catholic and biblical context
that provides the ultimate meaning.
Morality The Catholic View
Servais Pinckaers, O.P. • Preface by Alisdair MacIntyre
Father Pinckaers, one of the foremost writers on Catholic morality for
the coming generation of laymen, sharply distinguishes his view of
morality from modern “moralities of obligation,” which regard the moral
life primarily as obedience to rules that limit human freedom and curb
human desires. Instead of regarding freedom as the capacity to engage in
excellent acts of virtue, the modern view understands freedom as the radical
ability to do good or evil indifferently. Pinckaers argues convincingly
that this view of freedom and the morality of obligation that flows from it
have impoverished the Catholic understanding of the moral life. This book
offers the reader a compelling itinerary of moral development, rooted in
the theology of St. Paul and the morality of the Gospels.
33 Days to Morning Glory A Do-It-Yourself Retreat
in Preparation for Marian Consecration
Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC
An extraordinary 33-day journey to Marian consecration with four giants
of Marian spirituality: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe,
Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Blessed Pope John Paul II. Fr. Gaitley
masterfully summarizes their teaching, making it easy to grasp, and simple
enough to put into practice. More specifically, he weaves their thought into a
user-friendly, do-it-yourself retreat that will bless even the busiest of people.
So, if you’ve been thinking about entrusting yourself to Mary for the first
time or if you’re simply looking to deepen and renew your devotion to her, 33
Saints and their Symbols Rosa Giorgi
Saints are often depicted with particular objects or symbols that
played a dramatic role in their lives, and these objects have
become symbolic of the saints and can be used to identify them in
art. For instance, Saint Catherine of Alexandria is usually shown
with a wheel, the object on which she was tortured as a result of her
faith, while Saint Peter the Apostle often appears with the keys to
heaven given to him by Jesus. These symbols represent drama, suffering,
and unbending faith, and one has only to be aware of these
elements in order to recognize the saints in art.
Detailing the feast days, patronages, appearances, biographies,
and symbols of more than 120 saints, Saints and Their Symbols is an
exquisite reference, illustrated by more than 200 evocative color
images. From the same author of, Saints: A Year in Faith and Art.
Heresy Ten Lies They Spread About Christianity
Michael Coren
Bestselling author Michael Coren explodes popular myths about the history,
beliefs, and culture of Christianity.
Michael Coren explores why and how Christians and Christian ideas are
caricatured in popular media as well as in sophisticated society. He takes on,
and debunks, ten great myths about Christianity: that it supports slavery, is
racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-intellectual, anti-Semitic, provokes war, resists
progress, and is repressive and irrelevant. In a climate that is increasingly as
ignorant of Christianity as it is good at condemning it, Coren gives historical
background, provides examples of how these attacks are made, and explains
the reality of the Christian response, outlining authentic Christian beliefs.
Blessed John Duns Scotus
Marian Doctor
Fr. Stefano Manelli
The famous Franciscan theologian, Bl. John Duns Scotus, even before
his untimely death in 1308, was renowned for his defense of the
Immaculate Conception and known as Marian Doctor par excellence. This
book aims at acquainting the general public with the admirable figure of
this Scottish-born friar. It does so, above all, to promote the knowledge
and love of Christ Jesus and His Mother, the Virgin Mary, in the teaching
and life of this holy theologian. Scotus, as a son of St. Francis of Assisi,
stresses the primacy of love in theology. All else is ordered to love, and
in love everything is perfected. For God is love and who abides in love
abides in God and God in him (I Jn 4: 16). As taught by Scotus, the absolute
primacy of Jesus and Mary —root and synthesis of all creation, heavenly
as well as earthly— is the most perfect revelation of this divine love.
Adam and Eve
after the Pill E
Mary Eberstadt
Secular and religious thinkers
agree: the sexual revolution is
one of the most important milestones
in human history. Perhaps
nothing has changed life for
so many, so fast, as the severing
of sex and procreation. But
what has been the result? Mary
Eberstadt contends that sexual
freedom has paradoxically produced widespread discontent.
Drawing on sociologists, philosophers, feminists,
food writers, musicians, and other voices from
across today’s popular culture, Eberstadt makes her
contrarian case with an impressive array of evidence.
The Liturgy between
Innovation and Tradition
Nicola Bux
When Benedict XVI reestablished
rose up from many sides.
A professor of theology and liturgy,
the author of this book
Pope’s own theological and liturgical writings, but he
The message of Divine Mercy
St. Faustina is both a starting
point and a recurring theme for
Cardinal Schönborn’s discussion
the presence of God’s great
The Voice of the
Church at Prayer E
Uwe Michael Lang
The Fathers of the Second Vatican
Council allowed for extended
use of the vernacular at Mass,
but they maintained that Latin
deserved pride of place in the
Roman Rite. The outcome, however,
was that modern translations
of the prayers of the Mass
replaced the Latin prayers. What
was the reason for the Council’s decision and why is
there now a desire for greater use of Latin in Catholic
worship? Why have some post-conciliar English
translations of the prayers of the Mass been replaced?
Fr. Lang answers these and other questions.
Life Out of Death E
Meditations on the
Hans Urs von Balthasar
Death and dying are inseparably
linked with life. They are
self-evident and at the same
time cannot be grasped by reason
alone—they are ordinary,
and yet so incredible. In these
meditations, the acclaimed
theologian Hans Urs von
Balthasar investigates this great mystery. He asks
about the contradiction, inherent in all men, of
wishing to achieve something “imperishable in
transitoriness” and gives an answer culled from the
Hostia
The Power and Presence of the Eucharist
his powerful and inspiring film begins with the Gospel accounts
Tof how Jesus Christ instituted the Eucharist. It explains how the
sacrifices and offerings in the Old Testament prefigured the perfect
and final sacrifice in Jesus Christ Himself—the Lamb of God who takes
away the sin of the world. The constant belief of Christians in the Real
Presence throughout history is clearly demonstrated along with examples
of heroic witnesses for the faith. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is
explained as the center of the Christian life where Jesus becomes truly
present in the Eucharist. The practices of Eucharistic Adoration and
Benediction are presented as the real power behind any evangelization
and essential to reviving faith in every Catholic parish.
With contributions from Fr. Nicholas Schofield, Fr. Tim Finigan, Fr.
Andrew Pinsent, Hannah Vaughan-Spruce, John Pontifex, Fr. Bruno
Witchalls and Fr. Marcus Holden, this film offers an inspiring presentation
with clarity of teaching about the Holy Eucharist.
God’s Mighty Servant
Sister Pascalina Lehnert, Secretary of Pius XII
his is the amazing story of Sister Pascalina Lehnert (1894-1983) who was
Tthe personal confidant and secretary to Pope Pius XII for 40 years. In
1918, the young nun Pascalina is sent to Munich to be the housekeeper of the
new Papal Nuncio, Eugenio Pacelli. Though they seem to have little in common,
Pacelli becomes impressed by Pascalina’s directness, zeal and alertness.
But when he is appointed Cardinal Secretary of State in 1929, Pacelli moves
to Vatican City—where women are forbidden to live.
Pascalina is missed, and she is invited to work in the Vatican—the first
woman ever to do so. At the outbreak of war, Pacelli is elected Pope and
becomes Pius XII. As the war tears Europe apart, the Pope puts his life, and
the papacy itself, on the line by opposing the Nazis and fascists. Thanks
to the fearlessness of Rome’s clergy and the tirelessness of Pascalina, he
manages to save the lives of many Roman Jews. Sister Pascalina remains at
the Pope’s side until his death in 1958—God’s mighty servant to the end.
The Fugitive
When director John Ford and actor Henry Fonda collaborate, audiences
know they are in for a powerful screen experience. To such films as The
Grapes of Wrath, My Darling Clementine and Fort Apache add this brave,
Based on Graham Greene’s novel The Power and the Glory, the story follows
another fugitive as well: an American killer on the run—and the paths of the
