YOUR PASSPORT TO THE PROFESSION

At BPP Law School, we’re remarkably well

connected. Over twenty-five leading law firms

send their trainees exclusively to us, because

our programmes deliver what today’s law

firms need. We provide networking events

with graduate recruiters and professionals,

so you’ll gain an insight into the legal world.

Our unique programmes, like our LPC Masters

degree, the MA (LPC with Business) also

give our students a competitive advantage.

Whatever programme you choose, you’ll

find starting with BPP pays off.

BPP’s strong links with the

local legal community provides

exposure to practitioners, and

annual moots, networking

and a mentoring scheme allow

students to prepare for life

after their programme is

complete — students aren’t

left to do it alone.”

Thomas Savage, BPTC student

BPP Leeds, 2010–2011

PREPARING FOR LEGAL PRACTICE

You need the knowledge and skills. But you

also need to be able to put them into

practice. Our tutors are an impressive mix

of legal practitioners and experienced

academics who get outstanding feedback

from their students. With high levels of

face-to-face teaching, an interactive

approach featuring discussion and debate,

and plenty of learning by doing, you’ll end

up gaining not just the knowledge you

require but the commercial acumen to

apply it day to day.

“After graduating with a 2.1 in

Law from Lancaster University,

I really wanted to focus less

on the academic nature of the

law and more on its practical

application. Studying with BPP

has allowed me to put my legal

knowledge into practice by

working through commercial

problems that you might

face in practice.”

Suzanne Cleary, LPC student

BPP Liverpool, 2011–2012

“There are several versions of

each lecture available online.

I find this really helpful as,

not being a morning person,

I retain more information

listening to lectures later in

the day. It also means you can

pause and rewind so you

can really get the most out

of the lectures.”

Rachael Yarwood, LLB

accelerated student

Birmingham, 2011–2013

A HISTORY OF FIRSTS

We’re renowned for our cutting edge.

We pioneered the fully online GDL, the

accelerated LPC and the first practicefacing

LLB. We’re committed to providing

first-class education no matter how it’s

delivered — and to making it fun and

interactive too. On most of our programmes

you can learn face-to-face, online, or both,

and take your pick of morning, afternoon

or evening classes. In addition, our

downloadable tutorials and lectures mean

you can study just about anywhere.

“The Careers Service assisted

me greatly during my time at

BPP Leeds. I am now working

for the Law Commission as

a Research Assistant in the

Commercial and Common

Law Team and will start my

pupillage in Manchester in

a few months.”

Amy Smith, BPTC student

BPP Leeds, 2010

“I got involved with the BPP

Pro Bono Centre through their

StreetLaw Prisons project and

have taken presentations into

Pentonville Prison. This has

been an incredible learning

experience for me, and has

helped me decide to apply for

the BPTC with the ultimate

aim of the Criminal Bar.”

Jamie Campbell, GDL student

BPP London Waterloo,

2011–2012

GIVE BACK, GAIN MORE

Nothing impresses employers more

than hands-on experience, and our

award-winning Pro Bono Centre is the

ideal place to acquire it — whilst making

a contribution to the local community.

You’ll have a wide choice of projects to

help out on — advising people in

homeless shelters about their rights,

staffing an employment law advice line,

presenting in schools, and even

researching cases of prisoners who’ve

exhausted all right of appeal. Your free

time has never been better spent.

WE’RE FOCUSED ON YOUR FUTURE

We’re not just here to help you learn.

We want to set you on track for your future

career. You can use our Careers Service

as soon as you accept a place with us, and

it’s available until you secure your first

position in legal employment. We support

you with applications and mock interviews,

and offer specialist consultants, mentoring

and buddy schemes. We do everything

we can to get you into work.

“I accessed the Careers Service

even before I had attended

my first class and received a

one-on-one meeting to assess

my CV. It was shortly after this

session that I received my first

offer of legal employment.”

Polly Ellen Mumford, LPC student

BPP Leeds, 2010–2012

FUNDING YOU WON’T

FIND ELSEWHERE

We know that funding your study can be

tough. That’s why we offer more help than

any other law school. Investec Bank’s Law

Loan of up to £25,000 is available exclusively

to BPP’s full-time GDL and full-time and

part-time LPC and BPTC students. We also

give £300,000 of scholarships and bursaries

a year to students who would otherwise

find it difficult to realise their ambitions. In

addition we offer interest-free payment plans.

Finally, all full-time UK or EU undergraduate

students at BPP are entitled to a Tuition

Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan for the

full cost of their fees through the

Student Loans Company.

“Having already completed a

degree after school, I am not

eligible for a student loan.

The flexible payment plan

from BPP has meant that I do

not have to find all the money

to pay for my programme

in one go.”

Sarah Burgman, GDL and LPC

part-time student

BPP Leeds, 2009–2013

BPP has a very active social

community. There is a club for

everyone and if there is not

something for you then there

is the funding and support to

make your own. Through all

the social events BPP hosts,

I met many of my friends all

of which will no doubt be

life-long.”

Lisa Tolley, LLB accelerated

student, BPP Manchester,

2011–2013

Business Law run in all locations

September, January & May

OVERVIEW

The LLB programmes are undergraduate honours degrees in law.

As “qualifying law degrees”, they meet the requirements of the

academic stage of legal training for solicitors and barristers.

They are highly respected qualifications that are an essential

launch pad in preparation for the LPC and Bar Professional Training

Course (BPTC).

During your studies you’ll cover the real-life application of the

law — with a focus on practice — and you’ll be taught by experienced,

qualified practitioners and academics. It’s all ultimately focused on

equipping you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed

in your vocational training.

Once you have decided how you are going to study, you can start

in the autumn (September), spring (January) or summer (May).

You can either study on the traditional two-semester-per-year

basis and complete your degree in three years, or accelerate your

learning by studying three semesters per year and complete your

degree within two years. Also, because BPP offers the accelerated

degree at a lower fee, you’ll save both time and money.

Alternatively, if you wish to combine study with work or other

commitments, you can choose to study on a part-time basis,

across four to six years.

LLB (HONS)

This is the most flexible of our law degrees, allowing you the

maximum opportunity to tailor your study to your interests.

Choose between a variety of electives at each study level. It is

essential for those who want to go on to qualify as lawyers, as

well as those who want to use the knowledge and skills they have

learned to open the doors to a variety of other rewarding careers.

LLB (HONS) BUSINESS LAW

This programme provides a clear understanding of law as

it relates to business and the commercial world, giving you

competitive advantage in the legal employment market.

LLB (HONS) LAW WITH PSYCHOLOGY

The study of psychology will complement your legal knowledge

and increase your effectiveness. You will be better placed

to have an informed understanding of clients’ motivations and

gain valuable insights into areas such as negotiation, conferencing,

interviewing and witness handling.

NEW FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 — MA (LPC WITH BUSINESS)

We know today’s firms demand a high level of commercial and

business acumen from their trainees, so we’ve developed a new LPC

to stand out from the crowd.

IT’S YOUR CHOICE

Whether you choose the MA (LPC with Business) or our standard

LPC, you can rest assured you will learn the legal, business and

commercial skills needed to thrive in today’s legal environment.

Our focus is to get you ready for life in practice by developing

your legal and business skills through learning by doing. Your

teaching sessions will be based on you advising realistic clients

across different areas of law, just as you would in practice.

We also offer you additional optional features to broaden your

skills and knowledge. Take advantage of our Law Firm as a Business

module, ensuring you understand the professional and business

environment in which you will be working. Or if your passion is to

work in a smaller law firm, we provide additional support to help

you succeed through our High Street Extra pathway.

To show future employers you really mean business, BPP also

gives you the opportunity to sign up for an additional fourth

(non-assessed) elective. This enables you to prepare for the

fourth seat in a training contract, or simply gain expertise in an

area not covered by your chosen three electives.

It’s important you have access to the whole programme when

you need it, which is why, every face-to-face class (including

Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) on 1 September 2010

and offers a route to qualification as a solicitor of England

and Wales to lawyers from a wider range of jurisdictions than

under the QLTT arrangements.

It has a more extensive syllabus coverage than the QLTT and

the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has appointed one

assessment organisation for the first three years of the operation

of the assessments: Kaplan QLTS.

QUALIFIED LAWYERS TRANSFER TEST (QLTT)

The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) is governed by the

Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations (QLTR) 2009 and is a

series of conversion tests across four subject areas (heads) that

enables certain overseas lawyers and UK barristers, to become

qualified as solicitors in England and Wales.

The QLTT is now only available to those who applied for a QLTT

certificate of eligibility from the Solicitors Regulation Authority

(SRA) on or before 31st August 2010. The QLTT has now been

replaced by the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS). QLTT

applicants will be required under their certificate of eligibility to

pass certain heads of the QLTT and/or complete a period of work

experience before they can apply for admission as a solicitor of

England and Wales.

As an accredited examining body since 1997, BPP offers a range

of courses and study options. Whether you opt for our classroom

courses or our Home Study Programme, choosing BPP for your

QLTT training and Tests is the first step on your path to success.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for programmes whose first language is not English

will be required to demonstrate their ability to understand and

for them to derive full benefit from and succeed in passing their

chosen programme.

Admissions Officers may deem the English language requirement

to have been met for applicants to an undergraduate programme

if the applicant:

(a) has been taught and assessed in the English language

throughout their educational career; or

(b) has been taught and assessed in the English language for

at least one full-time year or equivalent of post 18 education

Test of English (PTE) Academic equivalent results.

Please note that if, after you start, it becomes apparent that

your English language is not at the required level for successfully

completing the programme you may be required to take an

English language test and to take English language classes to

improve the level of your English language.

*Students with an overall IELTS of 6.0 or equivalent shall be required

to undertake a compulsory Pre-Sessional English/Academic

English course during the first term of their studies.

BAR PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COURSE

(BPTC) REQUIREMENTS

One of the entry requirements for the BPTC is that students

are fluent in English. Applicants should therefore be able to

demonstrate that their oral and written English language ability

is at least equivalent to:

(a) a minimum score of 7.5 in each section of the

IELTS academic test;

(b) a minimum score of 28 in each part of the internet

based TOEFL test; or

(c) a minimum score of 73 in each part of the Pearson

Test of English (PTE) Academic equivalent results

On entry to the course, students will be required to sign a statement

that they are aware that this standard is required of all students

who enter the BPTC, and that they consider that they have met it.

For those with any doubt as to the level of their English skills, they

are strongly advised to undertake one of the above tests before

enrolling on the course.

Certificates issued by a test provider verifying the score

achieved by a candidate in one of the above tests must be current

and valid by reference to the rules of that test provider as of the

date the candidate commences the BPTC.

Subsequent to being admitted to the BPTC, should the BPTC

Provider consider that a student’s language ability is unsatisfactory

or there is question as to whether any aspect of it is at the required

level, it will require the student to take one of the above language

tests at any stage in the course (at the student’s cost) and achieve

the required score. This right is unrestricted regardless of the

student’s first language.

Should the student then fail to achieve a required minimum

score in one of the tests specified above, the provider may require

the student to:

(a) Withdraw from the course; or

(b) Intermit and improve their score prior to being re-admitted

to the course in a subsequent year. This will be dependent on

how much of the course has been undertaken.

In all cases the student is wholly liable for any costs incurred.

The BSB believes that compliance with at least one of the

standards identified above is the absolute minimum necessary

to successfully complete the Bar Professional Training Course.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN LAW (GDL) AND

LEGAL PRACTICE COURSE (LPC) REQUIREMENTS

If English is not your first language, you’ll need an IELTS level 6.5

score or equivalent, with a minimum level 6.0 in each area.
