Offer
Andor’s new ‘supercharged’ iXon Ultra 897 back-illuminated
EMCCD is now overclocked to 17 MHz, performing more than
60% faster.
Combine with the OptoMask accessory to operate in Crop
Mode, boosting Region of Interest acquisition to unparalleled
speeds, for example achieving 569 fps from a 128 x 128 ROI
(optically centred on the sensor).
Applications:
• Single Molecule
• Super-resolution (inc. Live cell)
• Calcium / Ion signalling
• Vesicle trafficking
• Voltage sensitive dyes
• Cell Motility

Crop Mode Explained
In Crop Mode, the user defines a ‘Region of Interest’ that encompasses the part of the image where change
is rapidly occurring, e.g. a ‘calcium spark’ within a cell. The sensor subsequently “imagines” that it is of this
smaller defined array size, achieved through special readout patterns, and reads out at a proportionally faster
frame rate. The smaller the defined array size, the faster the frame rate achievable.
Since in Crop Mode pixels outside the ROI are effectively ignored during readout, one has to ensure that no
light is falling on the light sensitive area outside of the defined region. Any light collected outside the cropped
area could corrupt the images which were acquired in this mode. This is now facilitated using the OptoMask
accessory, which can be flexibly adjusted to match whatever ROI size is required to frame the observed
section. In contrast, a ‘conventional’ ROI readout carries the significant overhead of having to shift and
discard unwanted pixels. As such, Crop Mode has the end result of achieving a much faster frame rate than
that obtainable in a conventional ROI, but can still be centrally located within the sensor.
