<strong>Programme</strong> overview<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science <strong>in</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gender</strong> is an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary social science Master’s programme<br />

that aims to provide students with the core elements<br />

through which current gender theories and research,<br />

<strong>in</strong> dialogue with established academic discipl<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

have contributed to the understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> broader<br />

social processes. The major objective <strong>of</strong> the programme is<br />

to improve students’ ability to critically exam<strong>in</strong>e, evaluate<br />

and discuss the field´s most important theoretical perspectives<br />

and research results. With these skills <strong>in</strong> social science<br />

and gender analysis, students will be able to formulate and<br />

analyse <strong>in</strong>terconnections between theory and practice concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality.<br />

As a student on the programme you will develop skills<br />

<strong>in</strong> critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> relation to social studies <strong>of</strong> gender<br />

and develop theoretical knowledge <strong>in</strong> your major discipl<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

both <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g good preparation for doctoral studies.<br />

There are also good opportunities to go abroad<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the third semester and take courses at one <strong>of</strong><br />

the many universities with which we have exchange<br />

agreements. You can also take advantage <strong>of</strong> the<br />

opportunity to do an <strong>in</strong>ternship for one semester, which<br />

provides an excellent opportunity to ga<strong>in</strong> work experience.<br />

Previous students have, for example, undertaken work<br />

placements at embassies and <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational NGOs, private<br />

companies and the public sector, where a gender perspective<br />

is crucial.<br />

<strong>Programme</strong> modules/courses<br />

<strong>Gender</strong>, Class, Ethnicity and Sexuality (15 ECTS),<br />

Research Methods (15 ECTS), Critical Fem<strong>in</strong>ist Perspectives <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Social</strong> Theory (15 ECTS), courses <strong>in</strong> the Theory <strong>of</strong> Sciences/Reserach<br />

Methods (15 ECTS), Master’s degree thesis (30 ECTS).<br />

Elective courses and/or studies abroad, and/or <strong>in</strong>ternship (30<br />

ECTS).<br />

Career prospects<br />

The critical social science perspective acquired dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

programme, together with <strong>in</strong>-depth know-ledge <strong>of</strong> theories<br />

<strong>in</strong> your major discipl<strong>in</strong>e, prepares you for doctoral studies<br />

or pr<strong>of</strong>essional work <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> fields, such as organisational<br />

management, development, communication and<br />

social policy.<br />

Admission requirements and how to apply<br />

Admission requirements<br />

A Bachelor’s degree with a major <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

social sciences discipl<strong>in</strong>es: development studies, education,<br />

gender studies, human geography, political science, social<br />

work, social anthropology and sociology <strong>of</strong> law or equivalent.<br />

To be eligible for the programme students must also<br />

have a m<strong>in</strong>imum average grade <strong>in</strong> their Bachelor’s studies<br />

equivalent to 3.0 out <strong>of</strong> 4, <strong>in</strong> cumulated grade po<strong>in</strong>t average<br />

(CGPA), B <strong>in</strong> the American grad<strong>in</strong>g scale, or C <strong>in</strong> the ECTS or<br />

Swedish A-U grad<strong>in</strong>g scale. For the Swedish grad<strong>in</strong>g scale<br />

G-VG the m<strong>in</strong>imum requirement is G. English B (advanced).<br />

Selection is made based on grades on the courses and thesis<br />

<strong>in</strong> the BA degree and statement <strong>of</strong> purpose.<br />

About the Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Science<br />

The Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Science <strong>of</strong>fers a wide variety <strong>of</strong> Master’s<br />

programmes that are either <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary, thematic programmes<br />

or programmes <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es. The variety <strong>of</strong><br />

programmes and courses makes it possible for most students<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d someth<strong>in</strong>g to suit their <strong>in</strong>terests. You can obta<strong>in</strong> a<br />

Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> a traditional discipl<strong>in</strong>e such as Political Science<br />

or Sociology, or <strong>in</strong> a thematic field such as Development<br />

<strong>Studies</strong> or Global <strong>Studies</strong>. All Master’s programmes at the<br />

Faculty give you eligibility for PhD studies. We also <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

Bachelor’s degree programme <strong>in</strong> Development <strong>Studies</strong>.<br />
