Hints at a New Collaboration Model

Intel’s Universal Parallel Computing Research Center

Goal: To enable programmers to be productive in developing

efficient, correct, portable software for up to 100 cores & scale

as cores increase every two years

• Jointly funded by Intel and MS at $1M/year each

• Engaged the institution at the departmental level

• Tackled broad, open-ended agendas and challenges

Lessons Learned from the ISTCs/ICRIs

• Pros

– Successfully engaged top faculty & students

– Early research results are very encouraging

– Community formation is very satisfying

– Tight relationship to owning research division

– Surprising interest from Intel business units

• Cons

– Can be hard to find experienced Intel PIs

– Cost limits number of centers/institutes

– Too many results to be fully absorbed by Intel

– OCRA requires us to move quickly

What’s Next?

• Seeking to engage NSF on co-funding

new centers

• Plan to expand the ICRIs by two

during 2013

• Looking to develop topics that require

multi-national collaboration
