IT took a while, but we finally received advice from the Commonwealth Government that our cries for help stemming from the EI crisis were in fact cries in the wilderness. It took more than five months for someone to actually acknowledge our request for assistance and the news was “sorry guys – tough luck”. This is despite the greyhound industry providing more than $5million to the other two racing codes to ease the burden they would have suffered. This is despite the greyhound participants suffering losses of benefits while people better off than them were getting grants for owning a couple of dud horses or were in receipt of other benefits. I say, where is the fairness? What is the point of trying to do the right thing? The <strong>Queensland</strong> Government delivered $250,000 to the GRA and therefore to the Swimming races CRISTY Godfrey has trained Anna Ford for just three months after being asked by owner Brad Belford to take her on with the longer 544m races to her liking. The first week the bitch was in Cairns with Cristy, another dog in the kennel got its muzzle off and tore into Anna Ford requiring her to be stitched up. And after her first race start, the same dog did the same thing and again attacked Anna Ford requiring more stitches. But it hasn’t worried Anna Ford (EA’s Itzaboy-Cobbler’s Peg) who recently won a Cairns Young Guns (544m). Cristy’s father Denis provided the runner-up Assassin Watch and third placed Come To Poppy. Anna Ford has earned the nickname “clothes drier” because Cristy was heading out immediately to buy a new one with her part of the winnings. That’s because training greyhounds has taken on a different twist in Cairns these days. With heavy rain for theweeks, racing has been interrupted often and training can be almost non-existent. Cristy had 2ft6ins of water running through the property where she lives. Only the house and kennels were above the water level. She swam her team of greyhounds through the water until they got to the roadway where she could then walk them. greyhound industry. Although it is yet to be proved the Commonwealth Quarantine Service was to blame for the debacle that was the EI Crisis, the dogs have been barking it from day one. It is about time the Commonwealth accepted its responsibilities, and at the very least, matched the State Government contribution, as in the long run, the greyhound industry has saved the Commonwealth the expense it may have had if greyhound racing had not picked up the wagering slack the EI crisis caused. I am sure there are many new members of Federal Parliament who are your new local member and I would encourage participants to approach them to ensure the Commonwealth Government makes good the losses the industry in this State has had to endure due to the quarantine breaches that occurred. It is understood it is under consideration at the highest levels of the Treasury. We do know that the facility will need to be vacated by October 1. The Gold Coast Club has decided it will go out with a bang, and the final of the Gold Coast Cup on July 30 will be the swansong for Parklands. I think this is fitting. That will give ample time to remove anything that can be used by the industry either at the new venue or at other sites. We will work with the Brisbane and Ipswich Clubs, Sky Racing and Product Co over the coming weeks to arrange suitable alternative arrangements. The rumours regarding Tweed Heads, Beenleigh and Toowoomba being alternatives to Parklands are just that, rumours. I can assure you the GRA is not giving any consideration to any of these venues being used in the interim between Parklands closing and a new venue opening. The issue of Ethyloestrenol was raised again at the March meeting of Greyhound Australasia (GA). The GRA and all members of GA confirmed their desire to abolish the use of Anabolic Steroids from greyhound racing and confirmed the exemption of Ethylestrenol for the use on bitches to control oestrus. Another pharmaceutical manufacturer has begun the necessary steps to register an alternative to the Nandoral Ethyloestrenol tablet and it hoped this alternative will be in place by July 1. There is also an alternative source of Ethyloestrenol which is in a paste form, and it considered participants and their veterinary surgeons should consider this as an alternative, as it readily available and it is understood to be competitively priced. It was resolved the change to the definition of drugs allowing for Ethyloestrenol in bitches only will become effective on July 1 on the basis that Ethyloestrenol is prescribed by a registered veterinarian. THE state of our industry. This month I’d like to give licensees an insight into the current state of affairs among our non-TAB clubs. CAIRNS The club is situated in Cannon Park racecourse inside the thoroughbred track, and it is no secret the new president and committee of the Jockey Club want to redevelop the complex without greyhound racing. The greyhound club had a lease, which expired in 2004, and within that lease there was an option to take up a further lease for a number of years. In 2004 the club tried to exercise that option. It was at the same time a development company indicated it was interested in buying the freehold site of the racecourse. The jockey club granted the greyhound club a month-by-month lease until that was resolved. Now, with a new president and committee at the jockey club, the greyhound club tried to exercise that renewal of the lease and this has been denied. The GRA and the club are negotiating with the jockey club for their legal right of lease renewal or a suitable alternative. Danny Ryan Chairman of Stewards Another record for Maureen WHEN Love Or Lust ran the track record over 620m at Casino recently, the least surprised person on the track was her trainer Maureen Culey. For Maureen has been making a habit of breaking track records during her training career. And Love Or Lust’s new mark was the third time a Culey-trained dog had broken the 620m record at Casino. Vintage Shiraz and Powerful Flash were the others. But Maureen has also set a 420m Gabba mark with Moon Critic and the 479m mark at Beenleigh with Love Or Lust’s dam Capishe’s Figlia. But her crowning glory was the fact at one time in the 1970s Culeytrained dogs held all three track records at Lawnton. Westmead Arrow ran the 370m mark, Solo Time the 482m record and brigadier North the record over 609m. Darren Beavis Financially the Cairns Club is stable. MACKAY The club is situated within the city’s I attended the National Stewards Conference in Adelaide recently with many interesting agenda items discussed. Naturally the anabolic steroid issue was high on the agenda and it certainly caused some strong debate. The good result was all stewards are in support of the steroid issue however, the timing of its introduction is the major topic at this point. Equally high on the agenda is micro-chipping of greyhounds for the purpose of identification. A national committee has been appointed of which I am pleased to be a member as I have pushed this issue for years. All states are supportive and the committee will be looking at results of current test, along with availability and costs. With a little luck micro-chipping could soon be introduced in all states and territories. Hurdle racing has now been banned at all tracks in Australasia. Also well covered at the conference was the New Zealand lure and where it stops on the completion of racing. I can see a great deal of merit in the NZ system, however I would rather see the same type of lure used and then stopped in our catching pen. I would love some response from trainers as to their opinions as I feel it is well worth consideration and perhaps a trial if you think it is worthwhile. Licensees will remember in 2007 when the GRA issued Mackay club with a “show cause” notice due tho their then financial position and a concern for the lack of greyhound and licensee numbers in the city. Since that notice, a further review was undertaken in September last year which found the club, licensee and greyhound numbers had been static. The GRA has monitored the club’s position since then. The club, to the end of January, has made a loss of $6000 for the first seven months of this financial year, figures provided by the club to the GRA. The GRA once again has provided further assistance to the club within its management in particular its bar and catering operations which is one of the areas a non-TAB club is able to generate income. Another issue facing the club is that the showgrounds have been earmarked by the State Government as a future housing site. While this may not occur in the immediate future, there is a suggestion it could happen by late 2009. This would mean a relocation of the showgrounds and could leave Mackay greyhound racing without a home. ROCKHAMPTON The club races at Callaghan Park 16 starts 9 wins, 4 2nds The (April, 2008) Journal Page 3 racecourse inside the thoroughbred track. Financially it is in a strong position and there seems to be enough greyhounds and licensees to attract an average of eight races a meeting each week. Their success has been helped by the fact the club has picked up a number of Saturday afternoon race meetings since the closure of harness racing in the city in August last year. TOWNSVILLE Racing at the Showgrounds, it has a lease with the Show Society, and quite a strong trainer and greyhound base compared with the other country clubs. The club is involved in a legal matter concerning the running of a caravan park on the site of the Showgrounds and it is hoped a satisfactory outcome can be achieved quickly. In recent years the club has incurred large legal costs in securing a new lease with the Show Society and Department of Natural Resources. The GRA assisted the club with these costs. BUNDABERG Racing inside the thoroughbred track, the club has seen a great turnaround in its financial position in the past year to the stage it is now financially quite viable. A number of cost cutting measures have helped greatly. Bundaberg provides at least six or seven races per week and their regular Saturday afternoon meetings helps financially. The club relies a little on south-east Qld and Rockhampton dogs to fill up fields. CAPALABA As usual the Capalaba club is in a strong financial position and regularly holds 10-race programs.
