Jockeying for a spot in syndicate
ACCORDING to trainer John Dart, it’s
almost like jockeying for position when it
comes to getting into greyhound
syndicates these days.
That’s because he has just put together
a syndicate that is full of thoroughbred
identities, mainly top Sydney jockeys,.
The list reads like a who’s who of
Sydney riding ranks with Nash Rawiller,
Hugh Bowman, Blake Shinn, Larry
Cassidy, Mitchell Beadman and even Sky
personality and former jockey Ron Dufficy
Unleashed and is now eight months old.
“There are 10 in the pup and there is a
waiting list for an y more we put
together,” said John.
It all came about after Larry Cassidy
got to brag about his recent Albion Park
Friday afternoon winner Spirit Released.
“Larry parts owns the bitch with a
long-time client of our kennel in Peter
Bennett a Gold Coast businessman and a
great friend of Larry’s,” said Dart.
“We thought she was a good thing at
That win became the talk of the
jockey’s room in Sydney and it wasn’t long
before Dart was approached to pout
together a syndicate.
“We just happened to have three of the
pups from the litter and have formed a
number of syndicates to get the jockeys
involved.
IT’S lucky for Rockhampton greyhound
man Tim Jones that his wife Teresa and kids
Sally, Holly and Peter love greyhounds.
The Joneses have 15 dogs on a 60-acre
property 30km from Rocky.
Tim works in the mines at South Walker
and his shift is five days on and five days off.
So every five days Tim leaves home and
Teresa and the kids become greyhound
trainers.
But all the family has a passion for
greyhounds, something Tim has had since
1985.
“I was living in Dysaart and one of my
workmates was Jimmy Donovan who had
raced greyhounds while living in
Toowoomba,” said Tim.
“I had a few pig dogs at the time and was
interested in dogs, so when Jimmy got me
interested in greyhounds it all happened from
there.”
His first dog raced as Bootaloo Snake and
did not win a race. “A learning curve,” said
Tim.
“But by then I was hooked.”
His first winner came along with Coal
Cynic in Mackay, a dog he bought as a pup
from a Maryborough breeder.
Tim spent five years living in Bundaberg
and picked up his best greyhound along the
way.
It is Zippy Zoe the winner of 16 races.
“Barry Nixon had her in Bundy and she
pulled a hip muscle and it was thought she
would be no good after that,” said Tim.
“She had won a maiden by six lengths but
fell over soon after and hurt the hip.”
Tim was happy to take on the bitch and
after lots of hard work finally got her back to
the track.
“She won over 460m, 550m and 720m at
Bundaberg in the same year two years in a
row,” he said. “She ran 31.50 over 550m there
which was just outside the track record.”
Zippy Zoe also went to Victoria to be
trained and won at Cranbourne and Bendigo.
Tim has become a breeding buff and
Zippy Zoe’s first litter, to Token Prince,
produced the high class galloper Adrian a
multiple Albion Park winner and big race
finalist for Bundaberg’s Phil Carter and trainer
Sandra Hunt.
Zippy Zoe isn’t the only good dog Tim
had while in Bundaberg.
Zany Zodiac (Anubis-Rebel Ryan) who
traces back to Gabba greyhound of the year
Solar Beach, was a smart bitch.
Her brother Rapid Zodiac won the Motor
Traders Cup and was hot favourite to win a
Young Guns final but had to be scratched
after a cattle dog attacked him in the week
before the race.
Zany Zodiac won eight races and was
third to her brother in that Motor Traders Cup.
Her first litter, to Addis Boy, is just starting
to race for Tim in Rockhampton now.
“The best is a pup called Rococo Boy who
has just won his maiden,” said Tim. “But
Addis Express is smart as well.”
Zippy Zoe also has a litter by Addis Boy
(a son of Token Prince so similarly bred to
Tim and Teresa Jones at their property 30km from Rockhampton with
Rococo Boy and a unnamed dog by Addis Boy-Zippy Zoe.
Adrian).
“Zippy’s litter is young and being
educated now, but they certainly look the
goods,” said Tim.
The Joneses have a kennel block and
straight track on their property outside
Rockhampton.
The family races all the pups.
“I was worried about letting the best one
Time knows just how valuable his family’s
help is to his greyhound training.
“Teresa and Peter do all the work with the
dogs while I am away for those five days
working,” he said.
The Jones kennel is full of youngsters and
Tim and Teresa know that success will come
their way but that it is ahead of them at the
