Western Reserve Academy Strategic Plan The Planning Process As a road map to success, strategic planning determines what an organization intends to be in the future and how it will get there. It requires broadscale information gathering, a disciplined exploration of alternatives and encourages making decisions with regard to their future consequences. A strategic plan brings clarity and agreement on an institution’s mission and vision; provides direction and focus for all members of the organization; facilitates communication and participation; accommodates divergent interests and values; fosters orderly decision-making and develops a framework for successful implementation. It affords the opportunity to prepare for and manage change. Finally, a plan sets forth specific goals and establishes a course of action for achieving them. It is important for the Western Reserve Academy community to know and understand the strategic planning process used to identify our goals – and the people who were engaged during the planning process. This is how we worked … We started by establishing a collaborative process. During the course of an intensive two-year process, the ambitions of the Board of Trustees, alumni, faculty, staff and parents were gathered in interviews, surveys and meetings, both on and off campus. Their views were blended with an assessment of the school’s facilities, finances, image in the community, as well as a thorough look at the economic forces impacting WRA. The planning effort was led by the Leadership, Mission & Vision Committee chaired by Head of School Christopher Burner ’80. The committee included Trustees Peter Hellman ’68 and Mark Tercek ’75, Assistant Head of School William Bugg, Dean of Faculty Kate Mueller, and faculty members Kevin O’Brien and Diccon Ong ’81. The input of Nat Follansbee and Linda Griffith from the consulting firm of Browning Associates was invaluable in guiding the committee during the early part of this important exercise. 4 Reserve Alumni Record Spring 2010
