There was plenty of staff on hand to roll the new stacks of bolted tires into place
at Blackhawk Farms on April 3rd. Each stack was previously bolted together, then
rolled into final position. This crew working at the entry to Corner 4 made quick
work of locating hundreds of tires. The weather was perfect, the people were
friendly, and this Formula Club sponsored event met everyone’s expectations.
By Ross Fosbender
If you didn't go, you missed out on a good thing! There were so many people
there that the work was done by 10:30 and we had the better part of an hour of
track time before lunch. The weather was quite pleasant in the morning, although
a cold front came through about noon. The wind picked up and the thermometer
went down, but the day was dry and there was no mud- hurrah!
Conga lines for newbies started the first session so they could, hopefully, practice
the correct line, albeit at less than racing speeds. The first 15 minutes were
fairly congested, but it quickly thinned out until everyone had plenty of running
room.
All participants were fairly well behaved. Only two drivers got sent to the paddock
for falling off the track. By 3PM everyone had gotten enough time, except
Robert Dudek, who would have driven until he ran out of gas or it got dark, whichever
came first.
Congratulations to John Lecuyer and Formula Club for presenting another
great season starting event. And thanks to all who came out and made quick work
of the required tire moving, stacking and truck loading.
Minutes were accepted as written in the Downshift.
• Treasurers Report:
The treasury is in good shape.
• Membership:
How can the club attract more members to the
meetings? If members don't send in their dues for
2004 soon they could fall behind on their mailings.
• Autocross:
Since the July 3&4 autocross is a stand alone event
the entry fee will be higher than in the past.
• New Business:
Tom Andreessen is getting out of the engine building
business in April. The new owners will only work
on V8's. Ford drivers need to find a new builder or
do it themselves. Due to changes in the Formula-
Sportsracing groups many numbers are in conflict.
There were concerns expressed concerning the
closing speed in the new groups. Members with
concerns should contact Alden Wells. Questions
arose concerning the fact that the clubs were not
contacted concerning the new group structure.
The club website now has pictures in the members
area. People with pictures for the site should contact
Kevin Carr or Larry Best. Do rabbits make good
Midwestern Council of SCC Boards Meeting Minutes, April 8th, 2004
The meeting was called to order at 8:05 PM by President Ron White at Sam’s Ristorante, Rockford, IL. All
officers were present and all clubs were represented. M&2 to approve the minutes of the last meeting as presented.
Pass. M&2 to approve the Treasurer’s report as presented. Pass. Treasurer Jeff Reyes is moving
to the Washington DC area for his job and this is his last meeting with us.
Race Staff Report: Workers’ Party was held and was a good time, but attendance was disappointing. 60
people had RSVPed, but only 47 showed, leaving a deficit for the event this year. To help the situation, Chicagoland
SCC donated $150. Other clubs: Salt Creek SCC also donated $150, Great Lakes SCC- $150, and
Madison SCC $100.
The rescue truck has all its equipment mounted and is out being painted now.
Old Business: A call was made for nominations for Treasurer. No nominations were forthcoming. Jay Busse
agreed to do the job for the balance of 2004, but will not run for the office in 2005. M&2 close the nominations
and to appoint Jay Busse Treasurer for the balance of 2004. Pass. A round of applause was given Jeff
Reyes in appreciation for his efforts as our Treasurer over the past few years.
New Business: M&2 made to revise our bylaws regarding our voting procedure. Article VIII, Section 6 of our
Bylaws states that all votes will be by a show of hands or by written ballot if requested by any director. This is
not our current practice. A revision to bylaws Article VIII, Section 6 was suggested: Voting on all matters, except
election of officers, shall be by voice vote, or by roll call (i.e. club vote) if requested by any director. As a
bylaw change, the motion must be held over until it can be printed in the KLAXON, and then voted into place
by a 2/3rds majority at a regular or special meeting.
Competition Board: AX Committee- The next meeting will be held at the GingerMan race event. Vintage/
Historic Committee- no report. Formula Committee- has discussed resetting of race groups. To be discussed
later. Production Committee- no report.
Stewards’ Committee- Next meeting will be April 17 at AnnaMaria’s. The stewards have been discussing the
recent decision to run all formula cars in one group and all sports racers in another. More later.
Race staff committee meeting will be at AnnaMaria’s on April 17 at 3PM. This will be an open meeting. Specialty
chiefs are particularly urged to attend.
Old Business: GCRs are done and CDs should be in the mail within a few days. 100 hard copies are being
prepared and are available for purchase for $20. Directories are at the printer and will be mailed immediately
upon completion.
M&2 to rescind last month’s motion to run all formula cars in one group and all sports racers in another, and
revert to groupings used in prior years. Lynn Serra stated that she had made a phone survey of people affected
by the change. She got 35 responses from the 91 people involved in formula and S/R groups. 14%
wanted to use the new groupings. 11% were neutral. 74% were in favor of reverting to last year’s system.
Many comments and letters have been heard from involved racers who are not in favor of the change made.
The speed differentials possible, particularly at Road America, were one of the main concerns.
Much discussion followed. It was brought up that the reason for the change was to avoid conflicts between
the open wheeled cars and the fender cars, particularly some of the Spec Renaults and Fords. It was stated
that if the problem was due to a few drivers, those drivers should be penalized, not the whole groups. It was
pointed out that the new plan adds one group to every race, resulting in less track time for all. M&2 to table
until we run one race under new rule. A hand vote resulted in a tie. The Competition Director voted against.
On the motion to rescind last month’s action, M&2 to waive tabling. Pass. A hand vote was held on the motion
to rescind last month’s decision to split the formula and sports racers, and to revert to 2003 practice.
Midwestern Council of SCC Boards Meeting Minutes, continued
Did not pass. Later Comp Director Ganley pointed out that group scheduling is the province of the club presenting
the race, as long as the Chief Steward of the event approves the schedule.
Bruce Szczech, a Madison SCC member, has been beating the bushes for contingency awards and has been
successful in finding two offers. Kumho Tires will award prizes to Midwestern Council IT, SS and AGS wheelto-wheel
competitors racing on Kumho tires. Prizes range from 150 “Kumho dollars” for fi rst if there are 5 or
more cars in class to 35 “Kumho dollars” for 3 rd in a five car class. Lesser amounts for smaller classes.
Kumho dollars are useable for the purchase of Kumho V700 series race tires at any participating Kumho
dealer. Requirements are for a Kumho decal on each side of the car and Kumho V700 series tires on all four
corners. You must pre-register before the first event. Details should be posted on the MC website. M&2 to
endorse participation in the Kumho program. Pass.
Bruce also contacted Carbotech, manufacturer of high performance and racing brake pads and rotors, and
obtained a 15% discount for all MC racers in both wheel-to-wheel and high speed AX. You must show a Carbotech
decal on each side of the car and use Carbotech products. M&2 to endorse participation in the Carbotech
program. Pass.
Both sponsors request a link on the website and announcement in Klaxon. Individual drivers must sign up for
the programs, contact the companies for free decals and meet the other requirements.
It was suggested that AX entry fees for non-members be standardized. While there is a suggested schedule
of AX fees, race entry fees are up to the race presenting clubs. Clubs can set any schedule of fees they desire
for both AX and W2W events.
Monday, June 21, Illinois State Representative Dave Winters is holding a fund raising “playday” at Blackhawk
Farms. Julie Ganley will be Chief Starter. Cost is $150 for the day. A cocktail hour and dinner will be held at
the end of the day for an additional fee. The event is open to anyone in any car. Comp licenses are not required.
Contact Winters for details.
Volunteers are needed for all staff positions at the VSCDA races on June 18-20.
M&2 to adjourn at 9:05PM.
Minutes taken and transcribed by Ross Fosbender, MCSCC Secretary
Race Groups Split
The topic of running all
Formula Cars (i.e. FF, CFF,
FV, F500, F440, FC, FA) in
one race group created quite
a bit of discussion recently as
the original proposal was
challenged at the most recent
April MC Board meeting.
Three affected competitors
(at Left) discussed this rule
change at Tire Wall Day. Here
Pete Wood on the left (CFF)
discusses his views with Dennis
Downs in center (S2000)
and Mike Schindlbeck on right
Legacy Motors Art Gallery in Chicago - Hosts “Thunder & Lightning”
Legacy Motors Automotive Art Gallery is staging a two day
exhibit of racing themed artwork. This special display will occupy
most of the 12,000 square foot gallery in Chicago. The staff
have assembled artwork of both historic and contemporary racing
scenes. The exhibit is called “Thunder & Lightning” to suggest
the explosive power of race cars.
The staff will also be displaying an array of limited edition
scale models of racing cars. This range of racing art and models
will not likely be on display again. All racing formats will be represented:
Formula 1, LeMans, NASCAR, Indy, Dragsters, and
more.
“Thunder & Lightning” will take place Friday, June 11 th from
6:30 pm – 9:30 pm and Saturday, June 12 th from noon to 6 pm.
There is a $5.00 admission charge on Friday, when a selection
of wine and beer will be served. Saturday admission is free. A high energy auction begins at 4 pm on Saturday.
There will also be a raffle for $500.00 coupons good for art or scale model cars.
Legacy Motors Automotive Art Gallery is located at 1415 North Dayton, in Old Town near downtown Chicago.
It is located minutes East of the Kennedy Expressway, off the North Avenue exit. There is plenty of free
parking.
For further information, contact Michael Knab at 312-337-2010, or via email at info@automotive-art.com. A
preview of the items available can be seen on the web site at www.automotive-art.com. A view of the “Library
Room” is shown above at the right.
CSCC Secretary Mike Schindlbeck checking out the “portable” building that
was used to lap the track at Blackhawk Farms over the winter. This building,
mounted on skids was a operated as a factory to drill and bolt the stacks of
tires that are now installed at critical impact zones around the 1.9 Mile Road
Racing Course. Buckets of bolts, washers, and nuts were used to complete
the task in this heated facility. The volunteers that arrived at Tire Wall Day
were surprised to find the ease of installation of these new tire stacks. All of
the ‘old’ tires have been removed and - the ‘flimsy’ racing tires are also gone.
Ross Fosbender demonstrates
that his dirty wet
gloves did not get that way
by merely working in a supervisory
role at TWD. Ross
was indeed found to be
working long before the
track touring started.

ERL to Stage Its Inaugural Endurance Race July 9 at Road America
SKOKIE, Ill., March 2, 2004 - Responding to numerous requests from various road racing drivers, teams and
the manufacturers that support them, a new sanctioning body called the Endurance Racing League (ERL)
will present a two-and-one-half-hour endurance race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., on Friday, July
9 as its inaugural event.
The event is open to sports racers in classes C & DSR, Sports 2000 Spec Renault and Spec Racer Ford.
Expected to be a sell-out, the event will be limited to sixty-five teams.
In addition to the feature race, drivers from special-interest clubs (Porsche and BMW Clubs and the like)
will be invited to participate in lapping sessions through out the day with their own cars.
The goal of the new league is to develop a multi-race series for the 2005 season, with a focus towards
giving competitors maximum track time in an upscale atmosphere.
Two 45-minute practice/qualifying sessions are planned. When coupled with the two-and-one-half hour
race, the event will feature four hours of track time, a figure well over what is offered at most other events for
these types of race cars.
Although one driver may run the entire race, three mandatory pit stops for a minimum of five minutes
each will be required during the two-and-one-hour race. It is expected that most teams will use at least one
additional driver in order to share both the expenses and the experience.
"Racers are looking for all the on-track time that they can get. This blend of extended practice time coupled
with the endurance race means that our entrants will get four hours of track time in one day alone," explained
Bunny Snively of Adventure Interests LTD., promoter for the event. "We hope that racers will join us
for a full day of racing action on this historic, four-mile road course.
"A two day road racing event follows on Saturday and Sunday at Road America, so drivers could get
even more track time that weekend," Snively suggested.
The ERL was formed at a meeting of interested parties called by Tom Volk of Racer Parts Wholesale in
Indianapolis last December. Due to the overwhelmingly favorable response to the concept generated at that
meeting, an advisory board was formed to assist in its development. Members of the advisory board include
Travis Duder, five-time national SCCA D-Sports Racer champion; Dan McBreen of Radical Extreme
Sportscars; Don McCandless of Merloy Racing; Bunny Snively and Bernie Behrens of Adventure Interests
LTD.; and Volk. "The high performance level and low operating cost per mile, combined with an upscale endurance
event, make the ERL the best bang for the buck in road racing," Volk pointed out. "The ERL is a
great idea," endorsed Duder. "It looks like it'll be a fun series! It gives us the chance to go out and get a lot of
track time, and do something a little different with our friends. It'll be exciting!" For more information, visit
www.enduranceracing.org or email Adventure Interests at adventureinterests@ameritech.net or call Volk at
(419) 535-5665.
Once those tires were stacked and positioned, there was plenty of time for an afternoon of track touring at
BHF, largely limited by the amount of gasoline brought along. This Corvette was one of the few race cars
that spent the afternoon getting early season track time in exchange for sweat equity during the morning.

Save the Original Elkhart Lake Street Courses
Elkhart Lake, Wisc., April 14, 2004 - The Board of Directors of the Sports Car Club of America - Milwaukee
Region (SCCA) unanimously voted to ask the Sheboygan County Board of Supervisors to stop construction
the roads used for street races around Elkhart Lake in 1950, 1951, and 1952. County Roads ‘A’
and ‘P’ are under threat from the Sheboygan County Highway Department which wants to flatten,
straighten, and realign the segment, destroying the character of the original street courses. Members of the
Milwaukee Region have been involved in racing at Elkhart Lake since the first event in 1950.
Consultants hired by the Sheboygan County Highway Commission failed to find adverse historical or
economic impact by altering the roads, according to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Further, a
dated Transportaion Committee plan calls the road a “major feeder”, but in fact the traffic has declined between
Glenbeulah (Pop. 375) and the Village of Elkhart Lake (Pop. 1100).
“We do not want any changes made to those hostoric roads”, said Angelo Gazzola, Regional Executive
of the Milwaukee Region. “We wouldn’t have Road America today if it wasn’t for the original street races,
and we need to protect our motorsports history”.
“There were many street races in the U.S. to begin with”, Gazzola continued. “It was a very special time
in racing and Elkhart Lake holds a very special place in racing. Sheboygan County needs to do all it can to
protect its history and place these roads on the National Register of Historic Places”.
