This year we also hired Katie Cannon, a former BID intern, to be our administrative and visitor services manager. Katie has taken on most of the administrative operations of the BID, but she’s better known as the smiling face that greets the many visitors who come through our visitor center. This year we also brought on several new consultants to help us with our operations. Capalino and Company assists us with strategic planning, locating funding opportunities and helping us navigate our relationships with city government. The A Team was hired to be our new bookkeepers, and we continue to work with Central Parking who runs our parking lot under the great supervision of Joel Castellanos. Finally, we just hired local LES firm Brandsway Creative to assist us with our public relations and marketing strategies. All in all, we have a terrific team as we head into the new year.
IMPROVING OUR STREETSCAPE The BID has worked hard this past year to institute and plan for significant streetscape improvements. We placed 24 beautiful new trash cans on Orchard Street and at major intersections around our district. We purchased the cans used and had them completely refurbished at half the price that new cans would have cost. Everyone loves the new trash cans as they both liven up the street and help us brand the Lower East Side. In 2012, we will add to our street beautification efforts by introducing beautiful new flower baskets to the area. As a result of a very generous grant from Borough President Scott Stringer, we are planning to implement a new lighting scheme in the neighborhood. Essex Street, a wide thoroughfare that currently has a hodgepodge of lighting fixtures throughout, will get brand new energy efficient lighting poles which will run the length of the street from E. Houston to Canal. The old fashioned bishops crook poles that are currently on some of the Essex blocks will be moved to narrower side streets where they are more contextual. Of course, safety is always an issue on our Lower East Side streets, and, unfortunately, there have been far too many accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists as well as cars, especially on Delancey Street. To address this issue, we are taking an active role in the newly formed Delancey Street Working Group and advocating for median extensions on both the Essex Street and Orchard Street intersections, which would provide a much safer place for pedestrians who are crossing Delancey Street, which happens to be the widest street in Manhattan. We plan to use remaining funds from the Borough President Stringer’s generous grant to pay for a good portion of this safety improvement, and the Borough President’s office is helping us identify additional funds that will allow DOT to complete the entire project.
