All of our great materials are available at our new Visitor Center, located at 54 Orchard Street, as well as online and in stores and restaurants throughout the neighborhood. PROMOTING THE BID’S WORK The BID was proud to be selected by the Department of Small Business Services to host one of their three BID spotlights for the year. The BID spotlight brought together key stakeholders from the Lower East Side including city officials, community representatives and business owners to examine some of our successes as well as study the challenges that the BID faces to help revitalize our neighborhood. The BID Spotlight not only helped inform our stakeholders but also gave us a greater opportunity to take a hard look at both short term and long term issues that we face, such as attracting more daytime foot traffic and preparing for the coming SPURA development. We also had the opportunity to show off our successes to foreign dignitaries. BID Vice President Mike Forrest led a group of visitors from the Brazilian Consulate who were in New York studying economic development on a tour of the LES. We’re thrilled that our friends from Brazil chose the LES as one of their laboratories! In February, the BID hosted a launch party for our new neighborhood guide at the Mark Miller Gallery. Cover model SuChin Pak was the big draw and the event drew around 200 locals to celebrate our new guide featuring some of the great stores and restaurants on the Lower East Side. On August 11th we had the opportunity to promote ourselves to the world when we were selected to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange! Board President Mark Miller had the honor of pushing the magic button to ring the bell, and Mark was joined by staff and board members up on the NYSE podium. It should be noted that the stock market went way up that day – of course due to our presence! Earlier this year, our executive director Bob Zuckerman participated in a groundbreaking new program called Neighborhood Leadership. This is a new program of the Coro Foundation, and Bob, along with Lower East Side Annual Report 2011 y 7
