JUNIOR COLLEGE News
Students in Year 4 this Term have been very interested in investigating insects and bugs in both Science and Art. They have
explored their life cycles, described them and discovered many other facts about them. They have also drawn them, coloured
them, made them out of clay, sticks, stockings, newspapers and other materials. What fun we have had!
Year 4 ‐ Miss Davie and Mrs Wendt
Children in Prep to Year 5 have been looking at the following character traits
(values) this term. A Bible verse has been presented each week to enable children
to understand the character trait. Below is a list of prayers that you can pray over
your child/children that coincide with the character traits we have been looking
at. Next term we will un‐package further character traits to discover the Biblical
perspective on life.
Junior College Enjoy Cross Country
Contentment: "Father, teach my children the secret of being content in any and
every situation, through Him who gives them strength." {Phil 4:12‐13}
Compassion: "Lord, please clothe my children with the virtue of compassion."
Perseverance: “Lord, teach my children perseverance in all they do, and help
them especially to run with perseverance the race marked out for them."
Humility: "God, please cultivate in my children the ability to show true humility
toward all."
Generosity: "Father, grant that my children may be generous and willing to share,
and so lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age."
Courage: "May my children always be strong and courageous in their character
and in their action."
Middle College Powerhouse Page
Many families are unaware that there is a Middle College
Community page on Powerhouse. The 2013 Middle College
page can be accessed by logging into your child’s classes,
using the Parent Password. (Alternatively, students have
access to this page as one of their “classes”). This page
contains up‐to‐date information on current happenings and
calendared College events. All Middle College policies can
also be viewed from this page.
From the classrooms
Year 9 had a “ball” on their Retreat Day last week. The
highlight of the day was when all the students worked
together to pass Mr Ball along the “sausage machine”
MIDDLE COLLEGE News
Design and Technology
Year 6 students have been learning to sew by making a bag and
screen printing a design.
Year 8 students are making aprons and then embroidering
designs using the embroidering machine.
Miss VanWyk
This Term in English, Year 6 students examined the novel:
“The Island of the Blue Dolphins”. The unit was designed to
deepen students comprehension and appreciation of the book,
at the same time learn about another culture. At the end of the
"Island of the Blue Dolphins" unit students were given options
of many different tasks to do to show their understanding and
demonstrate their creativity relating to the novel. Some
examples of these tasks were to design and make a board game
based on the novel demonstrating events,
characters and/or questions from the book; make a BIG BOOK
(for Kindergarten) based on an exciting part of the
novel, record a scene from the book on imovie, and design a
Wanted Poster. Mrs Samantha Carpenter
Year 7M have had a great term playing Touch Football.
Their limited prior experience has not disadvantaged the
class from developing into a great bunch of team orientated
players, willing to contribute at every stage of the
game.
7M have been very impressive in their response to skill and
game play instruction, leading to few very entertaining
games at the end of term. Well done 7M keep up the good
work!
Genius Bar ‐ iPad, iphone and ipod touch.
This week we examine an excellent range of
apps from the view point of Year 6 students:
Jumbo Calculator ‐ I think the Jumbo Calculator
is a good app because its very easy to use when
you’re doing your maths like division, take away, adding and
multiplication. This App is available for iPad, iPhone and iPod.
This App is currently free, so please get it. By Teiah Gibbs Year 6
News from the CHAPLAIN
Heavenly Father we give you thanks and exalt your Holy
Name. We remember the wonderful things you have done for
us and we seek to live lives that honour you and bless those
around us. We proclaim your greatness, for you are mighty
and compassionate and watch over everything we do.
Help us to be faithful and obey your commands.
Father, may we be a help and not a hindrance to others.
May we be a blessing and not a curse.
May we encourage each other in our faith so that we may
know you more, love you more and serve you more. We
thank you for the abilities you have given to us. Bless us as we
seek to work hard and develop them so that we may rejoice
in the way you made us, serve others, and honour you in all
that we do.
PRIVATE TUITION
If you would like your
child to learn an
instrument privately at
Riverside Christian College
could you please either
email Mr Ian Slater stating
your child's request, or
have your child see me
and I will generate a letter
to be sent to you
explaining the procedure
and associated costs?
Students can learn a string
instrument, piano, voice,
guitar or recorder.
Due to co‐ordination and
cognitive development of
younger children.
I do not recommend
larger wind instruments,
brass instruments nor
drums. For the same
reasons I would not
recommend starting to
learn an instrument whilst
still in Prep.
College Debating Team
At a recent APEX inter‐school debating competition at
that parents should not be responsible for their children's
actions.
Riverside won the debate and received great
commendations from the adjudicators for their
delivery. One adjudicator said that Daniel was one of the
best speakers he had heard that night. Daniel is in Year 7
competing against students up to Year 10.
The next debate will be held at Aldridge State High School
on Tuesday 16 April at 7.00pm. The topic is: That all
young people should do community service.
College is the best performing Fraser Coast school.
Results for 2012 testing recently released through the My Schools website
some wonderful books donated to our library by families
of the College. The quality of these books has been
fantastic and the children are clamouring to get their
hands on them. I am busily processing and covering them
and they should be available for loan next term. We are
so blessed to have such generous families.
COLLEGE NOTICES
EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST ARE NOW BEING TAKEN FOR
OUR BI‐ANNUAL SNOW TRIP FOR THE JUNE/JULY
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.
A letter was sent out to students last year in November
outlining the program, costing and those students eligible
to attend in Years 10—12.
If you require a new letter please contact Student
Reception and register NOW.
Our Annual fundraising Garage Sale to raise funds for the
Fiji Mission Trip is coming up in Term 3.
You can start dropping things off to the College now!
Call Vern Schultz for drop off points on 0409 309 949.
This year we have students and staff who suffer from
allergies and they must be very careful not to come into
contact with certain foods. Therefore we request that where
possible, the following foods: Eggs, Peanuts and Seafood be
avoided at the College.
We value the well-being of each one in
our
Riverside community, let’s make the
College a safe place for all.
Thank you!
Tuckshop Each Wednesday & Friday ...
Prep students must place their orders on Tuesday and
Thursday respectively with their class teacher.
All other students please ensure orders are placed in the slot
provided outside Tuckshop before classes begin on
Wednesday and Friday.
EXCURSION & UNIFORM PAYMENTS
Payments for Excursions and for Uniforms cannot be taken
from Fees Account Credit. I do understand that sometimes
parents have credit in their fees account, however our
banking accounts for Excursions and Uniforms are
different to our Fees Accounts. We do not transfer money
from one account to another.
Please note that students cannot attend excursions unless
full payment is made by the due date given on their
excursion letter.
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to decrease our 'landfill'
rubbish by 1/3, simply by recycling and composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
PAYMENT ENVELOPES
Please ensure that correct money is placed in all
payment envelopes. The College does not keep cash on
the premises and our ability to give change is limited.
If correct money is not provided, it may be necessary to
credit any overpayment to your fees account.
A SERIOUS MATTER ...disability carparks
Apparently some people have been using
the CLEARLY MARKED disability carparks
and then they are not available for those
people who NEED to use them.
Please be considerate when using the carpark.
The Riverside Bus Coordinator (Mrs Botha)
now can be contacted directly on 0427 913 117.
COLLEGE NOTICES
Please join us in welcoming Gerda Botha to our
Riverside Administration Team! Gerda is taking over
as Information Officer and Bus Coordinator as we
say goodbye to Leesa, who is moving to Brisbane.
Gerda is fitting in very well and is ready to handle any bus
inquiries from parents!
We would like to mention a couple of things that would help
our College Bus Fleet run smoother.
A major issue at the moment is communication between
parents and bus drivers. If your children are not travelling in
the morning, parents need to ensure they have contacted their
driver before 7:00am that day. You also need to contact your
driver if your children are not travelling in the afternoon. The
preferred method is by text to the drivers numbers directly.
Another issue is students not proceeding to their bus in a
timely manner in the afternoons. If your children travel on our
buses, can you please reinforce that they have to go
immediately to their bus to have their names marked on a roll.
Once they have been marked off, they are to board the bus
straight away. Students are not permitted to return to their
classrooms, toilets or the College Office. All too often we have
buses waiting for students who have stopped at the Office,
caught up with friends or are simply walking too slow! This
behaviour affects our bus routes, often making them run late.
The table below has all our Bus Team phone numbers for your
reference. Can parents please save their bus drivers number in
their mobile phones. These numbers are handy to have in case
you are out through the day and need to contact your driver.
