Peru reflection paper
My initial thoughts before leaving for Peru were that this country was going to be
completely different from the United States. I believed that the people would be wearing
different clothes, have many different religions and would be eating foods that most
people in the United States wouldn’t ever think about eating. Also I didn’t know how the
people there would react to American citizens in their country. I was a little bit timid at
first because of the war in Iraq and I was thinking that these people might be offended by
our attempts across seas.
Upon arriving at Peru the people were very kind and almost exactly the opposite
of what I thought they would be. When we got out of the airport and were driving down
the streets to Santa Maria I noticed that the people and their way of life was more similar
to ours then I thought. As the trip went on I recognized that theses people ate foods that
we similar, had stores that were similar and almost everything was the same except the
language that they spoke.
Most of the people that we met through the orphanage and through the schools
were very good people. They were very open and accepting to our way of life. They
wanted to know everything about our families and us. The family that I stayed with was
more then generous they were amazing. One of the days was father’s day and we went to
a cookout and they were very open to share their homes and their food. I am more then
grateful for the hospitality that these people showed me in Peru, they completely changed
my mind and showed me that there is good all over the world.
If someone gave me the opportunity to do this trip all over again I would do it in a
heart beat! I learned many new things and gained many life long experiences that I will

never forget. I also met many great people in Peru that I will be staying in touch with and
made many friends among the group of students from Moeller.
