Cautious outlook ahead
Bloomberg│Reuters │POEMS
OCBC SP │OCBC SI│OCBC SG
Industry: Regional Banks
Report type: Quarterly Results
Company Overview
OCBC, together with its subsidiaries, provides a range of
services including banking, life assurance, general
insurance, private banking, and asset management. Its
main operations are in Singapore and Malaysia, with
representative offices in 15 countries and territories.
2Q13 core NPAT of S$597 million miss our estimates
on mark-to-market losses from GEH’s non-par funds.
Management seems to guide a more cautious outlook
on low loans growth, slowing Fees and Comm
Maintain “Neutral” on current share price, cautious
outlook, with new TP of S$9.50 based on P/B of 1.40X.
What is the news?
OCBC reported 2Q13 net profit of S$597 million. This was
below our estimates due to unrealized mark-to-market
(MTM) losses in GEH’s non-participation funds. NIMs were
stable q-q at 1.64%. Loans growth was exceptional at
6.98% q-q. Fees and Commission was also at a record
high, driven by Wealth mgmt and Loan-related fees. Net
trading income did reasonably well on strong customer flow.
Contributions from GEH were however affected by losses
per above, but recurring portion of the business continued to
register good growth. Loans allowance was higher due to
higher loans growth. Credit quality remains strong.
How do we view this?
Despite the unrealized MTM losses, the underlying GEH
business remains healthy. However, continued losses may
be expected as the yield curve continues to steepen, and
credit spread widen. Management seems to indicate a more
cautious outlook, with flat loans growth based on guidance
for high single digit growth. Wealth management activities
are expected to slow. Credit cost may also increase from a
low base, as some economies, including China, ASEAN and
Singapore, undergo a transitional phrase.
Investment Actions?
We factor in 2Q13 earnings, including for higher provisions,
weaker GEH contributions, higher Net interest income and
stronger Fees and Comm. Base on these adjustments, and
an unchanged P/B multiple of 1.40X, we obtained a new TP
of S$9.50. We maintain our “Neutral” call based on high
current share price and a more cautious outlook.
