2 NORTHERN SYDNEY<br />

Government and ARTC.<br />

Improve daily freight capacity between Sydney and<br />

Newcastle by 50 per cent to support growth on rail<br />

and complement ARTC’s $2.5 billion <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane corridor.<br />

Hexham Loop (delivered by<br />

ARTC) completed June 2012.<br />

Rema<strong>in</strong>der of projects due<br />

3 PORT BOTANY RAIL<br />

LINE PROJECT (TWO<br />

STAGES) $172M<br />

Improve capacity and efficiency<br />

of the Metropolitan Freight<br />

Network and the Port Botany<br />

rail l<strong>in</strong>e to support <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

volumes on rail.<br />

Centralised network control from ARTC’s Network<br />

Control Centre South, with capacity for 36 freight<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>s per direction per day to/from Port Botany.<br />

Greater connectivity of the Port to the national freight<br />

network. Provide capacity at Enfield to stage and<br />

re‐sequence tra<strong>in</strong>s away from the congested Port<br />

Botany <strong>Rail</strong> Yard.<br />

Stage 1 complete;<br />

Stage 2 to be completed <strong>in</strong><br />

mid 2014.<br />

4 ARTC TAKE UP<br />

OF THE SYDNEY<br />

METROPOLITAN<br />

FREIGHT NETWORK<br />

Integrate metropolitan freight<br />

network with the Southern<br />

Sydney Freight L<strong>in</strong>e and ARTC’s<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> Sydney-Melbourne rail l<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

One cont<strong>in</strong>uous network control for rail operators<br />

travell<strong>in</strong>g from Melbourne and southern NSW to<br />

Chullora and Port Botany. Serves exist<strong>in</strong>g Pacific<br />

National Chullora term<strong>in</strong>al, Port Botany and the future<br />

Intermodal Logistics Centre at Enfield.<br />

Take up achieved August<br />

2012. Network control to be<br />

transferred from <strong>Rail</strong>Corp<br />

to ARTC over the next two<br />

years as signall<strong>in</strong>g works are<br />

completed.<br />

5 SOUTHERN SYDNEY<br />

FREIGHT LINE $1B<br />

Create dedicated freight<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e separat<strong>in</strong>g freight from<br />

passenger services.<br />

Elim<strong>in</strong>ate freight tra<strong>in</strong> peak period curfew from the<br />

south of Sydney <strong>in</strong>to Port Botany, to improve reliability<br />

and create more capacity. Provide capacity for 24 tra<strong>in</strong>s<br />

per direction per day across a range of freight markets.<br />

Provide a direct connection for <strong>in</strong>termodal term<strong>in</strong>als<br />

between Glenfield and Leightonfield, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

proposed Moorebank <strong>in</strong>termodal term<strong>in</strong>al.<br />

To be completed early 2013.<br />

6 ALBURY-MELBOURNE-<br />

GEELONG RE-RAILING<br />

$110M<br />

Allow <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> axle<br />

loads to 25t at 80km/h or 23t<br />

at 100km/h.<br />

Increase the volume of freight able to be transported<br />

at higher speeds.<br />

Much of <strong>this</strong> has been directed<br />

towards the Melbourne, Sydney,<br />

Brisbane corridor because of its<br />

importance to Australia’s economy<br />

and the bus<strong>in</strong>esses and producers<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g that economy.<br />
