It’s been seven years since 

London won the bid to host the 

biggest sporting event on the planet 

– the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic 

Games. Since then, the capital has been 

busy preparing to give our visitors the 

best possible welcome. From transport to 

attractions, shopping and restaurants, the 

experience for visitors this summer 

will be second to none. 

I am so impressed with the incredible 

transformation that has taken place 

in Stratford, the gateway to the Olympic 

Park. The new Westfield Stratford City 

has an incredible buzz and is attracting 

so many people to the area for shopping, 

eating out and entertainment, with lots 

more to open before the summer. 

Among Stratford’s attractions is the 

Theatre Royal Stratford East, a 

beautifully-restored Victorian theatre 

where you can catch new shows and 

up-and-coming artists. The town is now 

even easier to navigate with its new app! 

Stratford is now one of the best 

connected stations in Britain, making 

it even easier to visit whether you are 

arriving from London, elsewhere in 

the country, or abroad. The stunning 

developments around the Olympic Park 

have dramatically changed the local 

skyline. The new ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 

wonderful addition to London’s rich mix 

of attractions. 

We are also looking forward to many 

exciting events planned for Stratford 

after the Games, including the festival 

of cycling. These will help secure a 

valuable legacy for the area, providing 

more reasons to visit, along with 

employment and prosperity.

Free Events in newham 

Olympic Torch Relay 

Lit in Greece, the Olympic Flame arrived in Britain 

on 18 May 2012, before setting out on a 70-day 

Olympic Torch Relay, bringing the excitement of the 

Games to everyone. The Olympic Flame stands for 

peace, unity and friendship. It will be carried by 8,000 

truly inspirational Torchbearers, and will travel within an 

hour of 95 per cent of people in the country. 

Stratford is at the 

heart of the London 

2012 Games 

The Olympic Park is located here in Stratford - 

17 of the 26 Olympic sports take place within a 

15 minute walk of Stratford Station. 

To celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Newham 

on 21 July, there will be exciting entertainment along 

the route, in East Ham, Green Street and Stratford. The 

Torch will arrive on the Woolwich Ferry and come to East 

Ham, arriving at the Mayor’s Newham Show (Central 

Park, High Street South, E6) at 10.20am. The Newham 

Carnival will be the biggest yet! The procession will have 

the honour of following the Olympic Torch convoy as it 

leaves Central Park, East Ham and continues its journey 

through Newham. The Torch will arrive in Green Street at 

12.15pm, and in Stratford at 12.35pm. There will be free 

entertainment for all the family along the route so come 

along and line the streets.

If you have tickets, you will be able to visit the Olympic 

Park during the Games. You can catch good views of the 

Park from the Viewing Gallery within John Lewis and from 

Chestnut Plaza at Westfield Stratford City. 

You can also visit the Olympic Park Viewing Gallery at 

Holden Point - The stunning panorama of the 2012 

Olympic Games and Paralympic Games site can be 

admired from the 22nd floor of this tower. Here in 2005, 

representatives from the International Olympic Committee 

(IOC) were given a bird’s eye view of the regeneration 

potential of the Games for Stratford. Now open to the 

public, visits include a presentation on the London 2012 

bid and the development of the area from industrial 

wasteland to a world-class, sustainable sport and 

leisure destination.

London City Airport is just over three 

miles away, and can be reached in

The new Southend Airport is accessible 

in 44 minutes from Stratford Station. 

Heathrow, Luton and Gatwick can all be 

reached via tube and/or national rail. 

PARKING 

Stratford Multi-Storey Car Park has 

588 parking spaces and is located off 

Great Eastern Road (postcode: E15 

1BB). Westfield Stratford City has 

5,000 spaces. Both car parks are closed
