President's Message
June 1, 201 '1
Dear lvternbers.
You may recall that in this space in the spring quarlerly I was so excited about the
programs that your society had in place for the spring of 2011 Well I can now tel you
that everything we planned was executed perfectly The four clinics were very well
aitended, (due largely to the popularlty of the TV show Who Do You Think You Are')
To cap off that success, we had 31 new members added to the roster of the society.
The Carroll County Times-Georgian had a reporter at our final clin c conducted by
member Myron House. Please go to www times-qeorqlan com Sunday MayS 2011,
and look up the adicle by Amanda Thomas, Tracng Family History Can be Diff cultfor
African Americans.
So, here we are wrth a new personality in our combined membeash p, new faces with
new aspirations, new talents, new inteaests and now we just can't wait to incorporate
them into the activities of the soc ety. To get a good stad on that, our Volunteer
Committee has someone n the Special Col ections Room all day every Wednesday.
The second hour of our meetlng time s devoted to ' conversation" among members who
are looking fo. speciai help Our next few meetings will showcase different members
preseniing their success in various methods of research (giving personal stories very
similar to those of the stars on the TV program)
ln September we plan an educational to!r of the Carroll County Records Vault
And-just for members who live too far away to attend meetings-we offer member
volunteers to assist you wrth searches that yoLr may have a need for here ln Carroll
County. Through ourweb srte, please make your specfic request. The requests w1 then
be referred to a "buddy" who will be n contact with you
The developmental stage of our new web site is progressrng very nicely You are gorng
to love it We have a grant request submitted to offset the cost. And we are submitting
another grant request for a commerc al scanner that will enable Lrs to put tems like the
quarterly on the web So here we go off into the digita agel Thanks for being a part of
this progress.
Abstracted by Carol Ferling
Acreage was divided into four categories: First quality, second quality, third quality, and
pine land. We have combined aU these into one column called "Total acres."
Under the Lot Number column the court recorder sometimes used a character which
could be interpreted as a "ditto mark" or the numeral "11." Since it was very unclear, I
have indicated this entry with a tilde (-).
Death of Rev. J. M. Blalock
Rev. J Lr. Blalock, an old citizen of th s county, and intimately identified with its history
for the past twenty or thirty years, died on last Tuesday evening at his residence in this
place, after an illness of six or seven weeks lvlr. B. was a man that was universally
respected in this community, on account of his courteous deportment and fair and upright
dealing with all he came in contact. As an evidence of the esteern in which he was held,
we would state, that his fellow citizens confided to him repeatedly the office of Ordinary,
which responsible position he filled with c.edit to himself, and satisfaction to his
constituency
Mrs. Blalock, who has been confined to her room for several months, we regret to state,
is still very low though it has been thought tor the past week or two, that she was getting
better.
Rev. J. M. Blalock
Please allow me a short epace in your paper to record some of the noble traits oi
character, and to pay a feeble tribute of respect to that good man Rev. J. M. Blalock, who
on the 18th inst. was summoned to that home "where the wicked cease from troubl ng
and the weary are forever at rest." The deceased was a citizen of this county over twenty
years, during whlch time he endeared himself to the hearts of the people not only at
home, but in many parts of the State. ln 1853 the people having implicit confidence ln his
abillty and honesty, chose him to fill that responsible office, Judge of the Court of
Ordinary, which he filled until 1868
Judge Blalock was not adverse to the call of his country to battle for the cause of truth,
and before the bloody contest for constitutional libedy had fairly began, he left hls family.
raised a company and led them to the front to battle with the foe, there performlng the
most arduous duties with calm resignation until his constitutron failed, and he was
compelled to retire, much to the regret of his company to which the writer had the honor
to belong. Judge Blalock was a consistent member of the M. E. Church, a minister of the
gospel. Iadditional eulogyl. (slgned): "C".
The Latest Snake Story. The last snake story comes from Vllla Rica. Some two or three
weeks ago, Mr Thomas Perkerson of that place going into his kitchen early one morning
to build a fire, preparatory to breakfast, discovered as he thought, the head of a large
black snake, protruding from under the stove. Going out and arming himself with a ten
foot Scantling, he hastily returned and commenced a furious warfare upon the supposed
tempter of our old mother Eve. Having exhausted himself by the fierceness and energy
wth which he had applied his scantling, and presuming that he was master ofthe
situation, he concluded to take a survey of the field. Approaching cautiously the point
where his blows had been directed, and looking with a melancholy air, upon ihe battered
cooking utensils lying around loose, after a close scrutiny, in which he failed to find even
a greasy spot, he was forced to ihe lamentable conclusion that his snake-ship upon
which he had poured such direful blows was nothing more or less, than the handle of the
skillet sticking out from under the stovel
Surnames Researched
Joshua S. GAMMON, my great-grandfather; believed to be a brother or first cousin of
Josiah GAITMON, 1816-1902, buried in Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church
Cemetery. Joshua llved in Steele, St. Clair, Alabama, with his wife, daughter, and son in
1859 but disappeared from records until he had a mailing address of Bowdon Post
Office, Carroll County, Georgia, sometime between 1870 and his death on 16 February
1882. Living grandchildren of Josiah definitety remembered their parents mentioning
Joshua, but could not place the connection. My grandfather often stated that. "his people
came from CarrollCounty, Georgia." Both Josiah and Joshua are believed to have lived
in the Blackhall District, DeKalb/Fulton, Georgia, prior to moving to Carroll, Georgia, and
St. Clair, Alabama. Their parents possibly moved to DeKalb, Georgia from either South
Carolina or North Carolina.
Query
Researching: ADAMS, JOHNSON, SAYLOR, ftrccUlRE, IYNER, STANCTL
I am researching my great-grandfather's mother's (Asenath Jane ADAMS)family. Her
mother was Ava Ann JOHNSON. She married James Adams. Ava Ann Johnson is the
grealaunt of President Lyndon B. Johnson Lyndon Johnson's father's family is from
your area. His grandfather was Sam Ealy Johnson Jr , son of Sam Ealy Sr., brother to
my g-g-grandmother Eva Ann Johnson. The Johnsons had a large plantation with several
hundred slaves on it when Sherman raided the area. He raided their cotton plantation
and killed several of the family. Sam Ealy Johnson Sr. and his brother Jessie and two
nephews went to Texas after this happened
I would like to know where their plantation was This land would be owned by Jessie
Johnson, born 28 April 1795 in Oglethorpe, ceorgia, and died 15 May 1856 in Lockhart,
Texas. His wife was Lucy Barnett. Jessie's father was John Johnson lll, born 28 March
1764, in Franklin County, North Carolina, died 14 January 1828 in Ogtethorpe County,
Georgia (NIaxeys). His wife was Ann Nannie Ealy
