The purpose of this examination is to allow you to demonstrate your competence in several basic<br />

skills involving computer tasks and software applications that you need to master as a part of<br />

your dental education.<br />

Please turn off your cell phone. You are expected to complete the tasks in this examination<br />

independently. This means that you must not talk to anyone during the examination or send<br />

any emails except for the one email that is part of the examination or in any other way<br />

communicate with your classmates or anyone else during the examination. If there are<br />

terms or concepts in these instructions that you do not understand or tasks that you do not know<br />

how to complete, just try to do the best you can with what you do know.<br />

This document contains directions for completing a series of tasks which constitute this<br />

examination. Please read and follow the directions below very carefully.<br />

1. Using your notebook computer, log on to the Pacific network.<br />

2. Use the Groupwise client to access your email and retrieve the email you were just sent with<br />

the subject line “DP 102 <strong>Midterm</strong>”.<br />

3. Download the two attached files to a place on your notebook computer that you can<br />

remember. You will use these files for parts of this examination.<br />

4. Open the network folder \\sffiler\dds09\dp102exam. (Hint: copy this file path into the<br />

address bar of the Windows Explorer) Copy a file in that folder to a place on your notebook<br />

computer that you can remember. You will use this file for parts of this examination. The<br />

file you want is the one with your name in the file name.<br />

5. Open your network user folder. That is the folder you were provided where you can store<br />

files on the network for storage or backup. Inside your network user folder create a new<br />

folder (sometimes referred to as a sub-directory) called “DP102<strong>Midterm</strong>Exam” (don’t use<br />

any quotation marks). You will be told to place files in this folder later in these instructions.<br />

6. Open the PDF file that you downloaded from the email in instruction #2 above. You will<br />

follow the instructions in that file to complete the next step.

7. The file that you downloaded from the network folder is your picture (somewhat altered).<br />

Use an application program on your computer to manipulate the picture by following the<br />

instructions in the file called “DP102_MidTerm<strong>Examination</strong>_Supplemental<strong>Instructions</strong>.pdf”.<br />

Save the two files you create on your notebook computer by following those instructions<br />

using these file names:<br />

a. YourNameFull.jpg (where YourName is replaced by your actual personal name)<br />

b. YourNameSmall.jpg (where YourName is replaced by your actual personal name)<br />

8. Copy the two files you created in step 7 above to the DP102<strong>Midterm</strong>Exam folder that you<br />

created in step 5 above.<br />

9. Create a Powerpoint presentation by following the instructions in the file called<br />

“DP102_MidTerm<strong>Examination</strong>_Supplemental<strong>Instructions</strong>.pdf” which you downloaded in<br />

step 3 above. Save the Powerpoint file you create on your notebook computer with the name<br />

YourName.ppt (where YourName is replaced by your actual personal name).<br />

10. Open the Microsoft Word file that you downloaded in step 2 in these instructions. Answer<br />

the questions in that file by following the instruction in step # 10 below and the instructions<br />

on the Word document itself.<br />

11. Open the envelope that you were provided with your user name and password for the PCMS<br />

system. Use this information to log onto the PCMS system.<br />

12. Save the Microsoft Word file that you opened in step 10 in these instructions with the file<br />

name YourName.doc (where YourName is replaced by your actual personal name).<br />

13. Prepare an email to Hilda Anderson on the Computing Services Staff here in the Dental<br />

School. The subject line is “DP102 <strong>Midterm</strong>: Your Name” (no quotes, but where YourName<br />

is replaced by your actual personal name).<br />

a. Attach two files to the email The two files are:<br />

i. YourName.ppt (where YourName has been replaced by your actual personal<br />

name) that you created in step # 9 in these instructions.<br />

ii. YourName.doc (where YourName has been replaced by your actual personal<br />

name) that you created in step # 12 in these instructions.<br />

b. Send the email.<br />

14. Sign the statement below and then turn in this sheet. The examination is then over.<br />

I certify that I have completed this examination independently during the examination period and<br />

have not communicated with my classmates or other individuals during the examination time.<br />
