CHILDREN’S NONFICTION
that a child could complete on his own. Another
plus is that the majority of supplies needed
really can be found in most homes. The
illustrations do an excellent job of
complementing the written instructions and
showing the final result. The background
illustrations on each page are fun scenes that
show children enjoying the season.
The book itself is easy to use with each craft’s
instructions on a double page lay-out. No pages
to turn back and forth. Very young children will
need help, but those older should be able to
complete several of the crafts by themselves.
Even those with problems reading would be able
to follow the picture instruction for several of
the crafts.
Silent night, holy night : a Christmas
carol, by Joseph Mohr; illustrated by
Mája DusÎková. LCCN 99021121. New
York: North-South Books, 1999. ISBN
0732811520, HBB, $15.95.
782.28’1723. Carols, German--Texts; Christmas
music--Texts; Carols; Christmas music. unp.
Elementary.
“Silent Night” is one of our most loved
Christmas carols. It was written by Joseph
Mohr in Austria almost two centuries ago as he
was preparing for midnight mass. Mája
DusÎková has captured the beauty and simplicity
of this carol. The illustrations bring a soft
warmth to the familiar text and leave the reader
with a sense of calm. The complete text of the
song is illustrated from the silence of the night,
to the brightness of our Saviour.
The book, Silent night, Holy Night : A Christmas
Carol, begins with the story behind the famous
carol. Mája DusÎková has written a synopsis of
the events that led to the writing of the text and
music, the efforts of two men. Although the
text is very familiar, the addition of pictures
brings a new dimension to an old carol. It would
be especially nice for younger children who may
already be familiar with the words to the song.
A delightful addition to a Christmas collection.
100 best games, by Eulalia Perez;
illustrated by Maria Rius. LCCN
99069412. Hauppauge, N.Y.: Barron’s,
2000. ISBN 0764113437, PAP, $12.95.
790.1’922. Games; Amusements. 127 p. Elementary.
100 Best Games by Eulalia Perez is an easy to
use reference book. Nicely presented, games
are divided by indoor or outdoor activities and
logically arranged by sub-category. There are
introduction games, games to separate and
choose, expression games, games for two,
running games, games played with a ball, travel
games and games for infants and toddlers.
Rules and play are very clearly presented.
Colorful illustrations by Maria Rius help to
interpret directions. Many standard games like
Hopscotch, Follow the Leader and Freeze Tag
are included. The Parson’s Cat or Planted may
not be as familiar. There are also many
variations of popular games, providing players
with a new challenge. Each game is clearly
labeled with appropriate age group and the
number of players required.
This book would be a great resource for school
teachers, Sunday school teachers and parents
who need a quick game idea that requires no setup
or props. While games presented in this book
are clearly intended for children, adults could
also play adaptations of them. The introduction
games would be fun for any age. Directions are
provided at the back of the book for a few
simple crafts. These can be used with some of
the games, but are meant to be optional.
Parties; Cookery; Prairie dogs. 32 p. Elementary
(Small children).
In Yippee Ti-Yay Happy Birthday, the Little
Dogs on the Prairie are invited to a birthday
party, but they don’t know who it’s for. The fun
celebration includes stories, songs, recipes,
riddles, jokes, and games planned with a
Western and prairie-dog theme. Familiar
children’s games like “Simon Says” and “Duck,
Duck Goose” become “Sheriff Says” and “Dog,
Dog, Snake.” Yummy recipes include Dirt
Pudding (chocolate pudding with gummy candy
worms), Little Dog Cupcakes, Prairie Punch,
and Tumbleweed Popcorn Balls. Silly songs are
among the party ideas, but musical scores are
not included. There’s also a birthday prayer
thanking God for His blessings and asking Him
for help to give and not just get. The author, Phil
Lollar, ends the story with a surprise—the party
is for you, the reader!
Illustrated by John Jordan, this light-hearted
book contains the same whimsical cartoon
characters found in Little Dogs on the Prairie
videos. The colorful drawings are detailed and
add to the fun of the story. However,
illustrations on the recipe page do not show clear
pictures of finished treats.
Since children love birthdays, they will enjoy
this interactive book geared for youngsters four
to eight. It may be the perfect birthday gift for a
child you know.
ISBN 0316813079, HBB, $13.95.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
Joan Steiner must believe that, since her books
Look-Alikes and Look-Alikes Jr. use few words,
but many pictures, worth their weight in gold for
their ability to make you look at the objects that
surround you in a whole new way. Each book is
its own little world, with houses, outdoor scenes,
and businesses made up of common ordinary
items that could be found in the bottom of the
average purse or junk drawer.
Look-Alikes, written for “..puzzlers of all ages”
is a challenging look at such common locations
as a train and train station, a movie theater
lobby, a city harbor, a circus, and a playground,
all put together from over 1,000 hidden
everyday objects such as pencils, oil paint tubes,
peanuts, scissors, batteries, food items, coins
and dollar bills. From a ferry made of scrub
brushes and vacuum cleaners made of a razor
and a nail clipper to a couch made of a pair of
leather gloves and a ferris wheel made from
safety scissors, the pages of this book can keep
readers enthralled and busy for hours.
In Look-Alikes Jr. (meant for younger children
and shorter attention spans and including over
700 hidden objects), you can find hundreds of
delightful surprises such as a plug-in nightlight
looking like a blender, a yellow cassette player
making an amazing appearance as the body of a
school bus, a tape dispenser and a claw hair
barrette plowing a field of dark brown corduroy,
a clear plastic change purse masquerading as a
classroom aquarium, and a handful of unshelled
peanuts looking just like a child’s teddy bear.
At the end of each book, Steiner posts lists of the
items that make up each picture, with the hard to
find items marked with asterisks. She also poses
a question in each: What’s found in every scene?
More fun than searching for Waldo and more
imagination-stretching than any fiction book
I’ve ever read, these books are must-haves!
