(610-756). From essays such as this, the reader
is given a basic overview of complex issues.
It is interesting to note the editors’ choice to
divide the volumes according to historically
significant time periods in American history.
Through Volume III, the books seem to be
balanced with a variety of political, scientific,
and cultural details.
Volume IV: 1901-1998, The Modern World,
holds a more media dependent view. The
editors allot ten to twelve pages per year to
cover happenings in modern history. The
second part of the 20th century dedicates a full
page or more per year to movies released,
naming the director and the actors. While
Religion, Math, Education, and Health and
Medicine sections contain a couple of
paragraphs each, numerous sitcoms such as
Gilligan’s Island, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and
Friends each rate a paragraph detailing the
program theme and the cast.
Top Tony, Emmy, and Oscar awards are listed
for each year. Also, the sports section lists the
results of the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, and the
World Series giving the appearance that the
fourth volume is dominated by major U.S.A.
media events rather than milestones in world
history. This series is not illustrated.
devoted to an outline of world history, Middle
and Near East, European, American history,
African, and Asian history. Subjects and topic
consideration are laid out and covered the same
in all four volumes: religion, science and
technology, and the arts.
outline of world history, then American history,
and separate sections devoted to Canadian,
Latin American, European, Middle East,
African, Asian, and Australasian history.
The 20th Century has twelve sections with same
breakdown as The Expanding World, except
added are sections on Latin American and the
Caribbean, and one specifically on U.S. history.
Nations and States has eight sections with focus
on North American (each of the fifty states are
handled separately), Central America and
Caribbean (with each of the countries
highlighted from Belize and Costa Rica to
Trinidad and Tobago), South America
(Argentina to Venezuela), European (Albania to
Yugoslavia), African (Algeria to Togo), Middle
East/Western Asian (Afghanistan to
Turkmenistan), South and East Asian
(Bangladesh to Vietnam), and Australasian
(Australia to Western Samoa).
Each of the loose-leaf pages consists of hard
stock paper and is attractively laid out. All of
the material may be photocopied for research
and student use.
910.’9. Discoveries in geography. 192 p. Adult
(High school).
Within the pages of the Historical Atlas of
Exploration, 1492-1600, author Angus Knostam
tackles the complicated history of global
exploration authorized by the governments of
Portugal, Spain, England, and France during the
Age of Exploration. He touches briefly on the
role of the Christian Church mentioning the
“priests brought to convert the natives.” A
section is given to critiquing the history of the
church and the pope during the 15th century.
Objectives listed for some of the explorers is to
spread Christianity throughout the new found
lands, along with a desire for exploration,
wealth, and personal glory.
Beginning with Portugal’s Prince Henry the
Navigator, the author provides biographical
sketches of prominent navigators spanning a
century and a half. The influence of European
exploration toward native cultures is detailed
including the brutality of the explorers and their
crews. The author also discusses tribal
behaviors such as cannibalism, slavery, and
human sacrifices which occurred among some
of the tribes encountered. The book is
extensively illustrated with historic maps and
paintings and drawings depicting the time
period. The various artists have drawn the
native people in their normal state of dress so
partial nudity is commonplace.
Encyclopedia of archaeology. The great
archaeologists, edited by Tim Murray.
LCCN 99052159. Santa Barbara, Calif.:
ABC-CLIO, 1999. ISBN 1576071995,
HBB, $150.00.
930.1’092’2. Archaeologists--Biography--
Encyclopedias. 2 v. Adult (High school).
The Encyclopedia of Archaeology. The Great
Archaeologists is two volumes in a five volume
set on archaeology. The editor Tim Murray
chose fifty-eight archaeologists who contributed
significant archaeological advancements as
subjects. Each biographical essay was
researched and written by practicing
archaeologists. The sketches are listed
chronologically.
The articles are scholarly works directed toward
a readership who has a working knowledge of
archaeology or access additional information on
the subject such as the following three volumes
of the series. The writers often accept the reader
understands associations of individuals within
the field of archaeology. Each biography
concludes with a bibliography of primary and
secondary sources for further reading.
An alphabetically list of entries is placed at the
beginning of each volume. The second book
closes with a glossary of archaeological terms
and an index. Throughout the books, black and
white photographs show portraits of the subject,
crew, and archaeological digs.
Much of the archaeology theory written
supports a evolutionary perspective but the
advancement of important anthropological
information of ancient cultures cannot be
forgotten.
