Every effort has been made to provide a complete and accurate listing of donors and gifts of $1,000
or more received between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Please accept our sincere apology if a
mistake or an omission has occurred.
It is the policy of the University of California, Santa Barbara and the UC Santa Barbara Foundation
that a modest portion of gifts and/or the income from gifts may be used to defray the costs of raising
and administering funds. As of July 1, 2010, the assessment is 2 percent on all new gifts.
A Shared Future
As UC Santa Barbara grappled with huge reductions
in state funding during 2009-2010, alumni, parents,
and friends responded in record numbers and
with overwhelming generosity, contributing $44.5 million
for scholarships, research, and academic programs — an
increase of nearly $4 million over the previous year.
Thus far, the multi-year Campaign for UC Santa Barbara
has generated almost $590 million for priority projects
and initiatives that will help ensure the campus’s overall
excellence for future generations.
UCSB’s accomplishments in teaching, research, and
public service are strengthened immeasurably by private philanthropy, and our donors
can take special satisfaction in this. Your enthusiastic support also continues to play a
pivotal role in enabling the campus to respond to economic challenges in ways that
do not compromise our commitment to quality, access, and innovation.
To counteract the rising cost of a UC education, donations for student
scholarships and fellowships increased nearly 50 percent to more than $5 million last
year. We are also delighted to report that endowment gifts for student internships
and pioneering research surpassed $10 million. Three new endowed professorships
were established, bringing the campaign total to 59.
Creating a vital and vibrant future for UC Santa Barbara — a future that will
reflect the needs of our changing world and of tomorrow’s students — is foremost on
our minds as campus planning moves forward for the next phase of the campaign.
Please accept our sincere gratitude for your partnership in this extraordinary
endeavor. Your investment in UC Santa Barbara is an investment in our shared future,
one that holds great promise and opportunity with tremendous benefits for us all.
Philanthropy
at Work
UC Santa Barbara is proud to recognize the growing number of alumni, parents,
and friends, as well as corporations, foundations, and organizations, who made
generous contributions to The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara in the year ending
June 30, 2010. Their philanthropic gifts will enhance teaching and research,
strengthen existing areas of excellence, and make it possible to develop new,
innovative academic programs.
To all of our supporters, especially those listed in the Honor Roll of Donors
that begins on page 14, UCSB expresses its sincere gratitude and profound
appreciation. On the pages that follow are just a few examples of the ways in
which the generosity of UC Santa Barbara’s benefactors supports academic
excellence and creates new opportunities for learning and discovery.
Making a Difference
Clinical trials are under way at 12 locations throughout the world on a new artificial
pancreas developed in collaboration with UCSB researchers to help treat Type I diabetes.
Theoretical biologist Madhav Mani has
been named a Simons Postdoctoral
Research Fellow.
UC Santa Barbara received a
record 18,023 gifts during
2009-2010 to advance
teaching and research and
help improve people’s lives. Following
are examples of a few outstanding gifts.
The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
provided $264,000 for research on the
design and clinical testing of algorithms
for an artificial pancreas to help treat
Type I diabetes. Contributions for
Alzheimer’s research and education
included a major anonymous gift, as
well as $160,000 from the Alzheimer’s
Association and Intel for the research
and development of online software to
help improve lifestyle habits and delay
the onset of the disease.
In addition, musician Jack Johnson
and his wife, Kim, both alumni, donated
$50,000 to assist students with serious
medical conditions through the Disabled
Students Program.
Among the donors who renewed
their support for the campus was SAGE
Publications, Inc., which contributed
$1.45 million for the SAGE Center for
the Study of the Mind. The recent gift
for the center’s distinguished visiting
scholar program and lecture series will
enable the SAGE Center to bring leading
researchers to campus to explore the
multidimensional nature of the human
mind.
The Simons Foundation awarded
the Physics Department nearly $600,000
to extend the frontiers of research in
theoretical physics. The postdoctoral
research fellowships will enable
UCSB to recruit outstanding recent
Ph.D. recipients to campus to pursue
their individual research projects in
collaboration with a faculty mentor.
Elizabeth Loftus, an expert on human
memory, is among the foremost scholars
that present their work at the SAGE
Center for the Study of the Mind.
Harding University Partnership School teacher Verity Allen helps one of her fourth-grade students work out a math concept in a class
offered by UCSB’s Center for Mathematical Inquiry in collaboration with the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.
Learning a New Way
Harry Lucas, Jr., chair of the
Educational Advancement
Foundation, contributed
more than $317,000 to the
Department of Mathematics to renew his
support for the Center for Mathematical
Inquiry (CMI).
The CMI is one of five inquirybased
learning projects established by
the donor at major research universities
to improve mathematics education.
The UCSB center is engaged in teacher
education and research on inquiry-based
learning practices in K-12 and university
mathematics classes. Students learn
through guided exploration with the
help of experienced instructors.
“The renewed support from
Mr. Lucas will ensure the continued
development of a research base that
examines teaching and learning through
inquiry-based practices,” said Bill Jacob,
UCSB professor of mathematics and
director of the center. “We are learning
more about how ideas develop in
learners.”
In collaboration with the Teacher
Education Program in UCSB’s Gevirtz
Graduate School of Education, the CMI
offers classes for K-12 students and
UC Santa Barbara donors recognized the need for increased financial aid to help offset the higher cost of a UC education, contributing
more than $5 million for scholarships and graduate fellowships.
Keeping
UCSB
Affordable
To help students address the
rising cost of a UC education,
donations for scholarships
and fellowships increased
substantially last year to more than
$5 million, reflecting the growing
generosity of UC Santa Barbara parents,
alumni, and friends.
Among the major gifts was a
$759,000 endowment, established
in memory of UCSB alumnus Kevin
Christensen, that will provide ongoing
scholarship support. The gift was in the
form of a bequest from Christensen’s
late mother, Carolyn. In addition, the
Mithun Family Foundation donated
almost $400,000 for financial aid.
“With the recent increase in UC
fees, many students are struggling to
find ways to finance their education,
and it is generous gifts such as these
that will make the dream of a college
degree become a reality for many of
our students,” said Mike Miller, acting
director of the Office of Financial Aid. At
UCSB, 70 percent of all undergraduates
receive some form of financial assistance.
The recent contributions will
also help advance Project You Can, a
University of California systemwide effort
to raise $1 billion in private funds over
the next four years to ensure educational
access for all qualified students.
Honor Roll of Donors
Lancaster Society
UC Santa Barbara is grateful for
the extraordinary support of our
alumni, parents, friends, trustees of
the UC Santa Barbara Foundation,
corporations, and foundations who
have contributed $100,000 or more
to the university over time. Through
their commitment and leadership,
these distinguished members of
the Lancaster Society have helped
build the university’s reputation for
teaching, research, and public service.
The Society is named for Louis and
Winifred Lancaster, civic-minded
philanthropists deeply committed to
the public partnership that is at the
heart of UC Santa Barbara. During
their lifetimes, they helped establish
the UC Santa Barbara Foundation and
worked tirelessly to build meaningful
bridges between the university
and the larger community. Their
vision is sustained through the loyal
generosity of today’s members of
the Lancaster Society, celebrated for
their contributions to an enduring
foundation for excellence at UC Santa
Barbara.
Legacy Circle
The Legacy Circle honors alumni,
friends, faculty, and staff who have
included UC Santa Barbara in their
estate plans through some form of
planned gift. Membership in the
society is conferred upon those who
have communicated to the university
their intention to make a gift through
a bequest, charitable trust, charitable
gift annuity, pooled income funds,
life insurance, retirement fund, or a
gift of property with a retained life
estate. The following generous donors
are providing the legacy of support
that will enable UC Santa Barbara to
continue to grow and excel.
Potential students tour the campus
Chancellor’s Council
The Chancellor’s Council, UC Santa
Barbara’s premier annual giving
program, recognizes donors of $1,000
or more to the university. These
gifts are essential to building and
maintaining the overall excellence of
the campus. They may be unrestricted
for use where the need is greatest,
or restricted to support a specific
department or program. UC Santa
Barbara honors and celebrates alumni,
friends, parents, and trustees of the
UC Santa Barbara Foundation for their
ongoing partnership and commitment
to the future of this great university.
