which is one of the oldest civil buildings surviving

cathedral – the Annunciation Cathedral. The

Annunciation Cathedral has an assembly of

and ancient iconostasis. Not far from there the

Bell tower of Ivan the Great mounts up, having

nearby the Archangel Michael Cathedral, a family

vault of great Moscow knyazes and tsars.

on the uneven side there are the Yermolova

Start your walk from Okhotniy Ryad metro

in front of the building of the State Historical

Museum, the Iversk (Voskresensk) Gates, near

Zero Kilometer mark – start of all Russian

roads. The Historical Museum having nearby a

monument to Soviet Marshall G.K. Zhukov,

the Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Forces

in the Second World War, erected in 1995,

was established almost one hundred fifty

years ago. The Voskresensk Gates are much

older than the Historical Museum. They were

built by the close of the sixteenth century as

the main gates of≈Kitay-gorod – the second

Moscow citadel after the Kremlin. There is

the Chapel of the Iversk icon of the Mother of

God near them. Through the Iversk Gates’ arc

follow right to Red Square. There is the Kazan

Cathedral to the left, a monument of Moscow

liberation from the Poles in 1612. Behind it

you can see the building of the Upper shopping

arcade (GUM) built more than 100 years ago.

In winter an area in front of the GUM becomes

a skating rink right in Red Square. On the opposite

side of the square there is the Cathedral

of Pokrov of Our Lady upon a moat or else

St. Basil’s Cathedral, which makes the list of

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Russia. Near

the cathedral there is Lobnoye mesto, a place

where tsar decrees were publicly read. In front

of the St. Basil’s Cathedral there is a monument

to Moscow liberators in 1612 – K. Minin

and D. Pozharsky. A few steps away from there

is the most famous towel of the Kremlin – the

Spasskaya Tower. One of the tower’s decorations

is well-known chiming clock made by

English engineer Christopher Galloway.

Start and finish - Ploshchad Revolyutsii.

The Moscow Kremlin’ s Cathedrals

The most ancient square in the Kremlin is the

Cathedral Square. Its name is not accidental – an

abundance of gold cupolas gives a thrill. To get

to the Cathedral Square you need to enter the

territory of the Kremlin through the Kutafya

Tower. Then follow to the Ivanovskaya Square

passing over which you can come to the Cathedral

Square. Right in front of you there is the the

Dormition Cathedral, which was built in 1475

– 1479. There is a building with silver cupolas

to its right – it is the Patriarch’s Palace and the

Twelve Apostles’ Church. Nowadays it works

as a museum presenting the most valuable

monuments of history and culture of the 17th

century. Behind the Dormition Cathedral there is

the Church of the Deposition of the Robe of the

Mother of God having its constant exhibition “The

Archaeology of the Moscow Kremlin”. To the left

of the Dormition Cathedral you can see a small

Along the main street

of Moscow

You can get to the main street of Moscow

coming to the Tverskaya metro station. Going

up from the subway you will find yourself on

Pushkinskaya Square near the famous monument

to Pushkin made by sculptor Opekushin.

Cross the square and you will find yourself on the

even side of Tverskaya street. Here you can see

a corner house with turret, house No.16. It was

built in 1880. Then we follow near the house

No. 14, which was built by the close of the 18th

century. One of the owners of this house, a merchant

from Saint Petersburg, Yeliseev, opened

the Yeliseevskiy grocery store – the most popular

grocery store of the city. After several houses

on this side there are Tverskaya Square and the

monument of the city founder – the knyaz Yuri

Dolgorukiy, which was put in 1947. In front of us

there is the Moscow City Hall, earlier named as

the House of Moscow General-Governor. After

the dwelling house over Tverskaya Square there

is a start of pedestrian zone – Kamergerskiy

pereulok. The Moscow Chekhov Drama Theatre is

located there. To the right of it there is one more

remarkable building of Tverskaya street – the

Central Telegraph Office. Its architecture conjoins

two absolutely incompatible styles - tasteful

modern and geometric constructivism. Further

This pedestrian route lies through Kuznetskiy

Most, Kamergerskiy pereulok and Tverskaya.

Start your walk from the Kuznetskiy Most metro

station and go by Tverskaya through Kamergerskiy

pereulok. The most important part of

this pedestrian zone is Kuznetskiy Most, one of

the oldest streets of Moscow. Its appearance in

this district was connected with building of the

Cannon Yard, and in its name there is a name of

the bridge over Neglinnaya river. Its name was

a symbol of fashion and luxury – the best shops

of the city were located here. This is exactly

what was hinted at by the poet P.A. Vyazemskiy,

a friend of A.S. Pushkin, in his poem, calling

Kuznetskiy Most the “motley corner of Paris”.

And now this place is a real Moscow legend, a

meeting place of tourists and Moscovites with

the most famous shops, restaurants, clubs,

cafes many of which are open 24 hours a day.

Here the life is always, 24 hours a day, 7 days a

week in a bustle.
