What makes UNC Asheville
seriously

Creative?
4Liberal Arts. Professors. Achievement. Academics. Research. Success.
Name the one thing that the world’s
leading scientists, economists, teachers
and entrepreneurs have in common:
They are all creative thinkers.
At the University of North Carolina at Asheville,
creative expression will become an inherent part of
your academic experience—from the discussions you
will have in class with professors to the discoveries
you make with other students.
Whether you are studying psychology, engineering,
environmental science or jazz composition, your
curriculum will emphasize real-world learning and
research experience rather than long-winded lecture
classes. We want our students to become lifelong
problem solvers and critical thinkers who are experts
in their majors and ready for challenging careers.
That’s what learning is all about at a
Seriously Creative university.
In our New Media lab, a group of students are
creating a photorealistic, 3D-animated version of
Abraham Lincoln. Their project, led by Associate
Professor Chris Oakley, is a convergence of art,
technology and extensive historical research.
It’s just one example of the Liberal Arts at work.
today’s
liberal arts
“
The liberal arts tradition is alive and well
at UNC Asheville, where students are
encouraged to question, to discuss...”
—Princeton Review
Find the art in science and the science in art.
The Liberal Arts offer a time-tested blueprint to get the most out of
your college education. It’s called interdisciplinary learning.
We encourage you to explore many different subjects outside your
chosen major to understand how they interact. For example: How
science influences art, how economics drives sustainability or how
history is rediscovered through modern technology.
A UNC Asheville education challenges you to look at life from many
perspectives—to question, to discuss, to see connections between a
multitude of subjects. Our professors are ready to help you find your
calling—even if you’re not sure what that might be right now.

A better way to learn.
Your education won’t get lost
in a 300-person lecture hall.
UNC Asheville professors pride
themselves on being available
for their students.
Lei Han: Associate Professor
Lei Han helps her New Media
students cross the technical
divide with one-on-one and
Q&A sessions in every class.
Like so many professors at
UNC Asheville, she prefers
leading discussions rather than
giving lectures.
Jason Wingert: Every student
in the Health and Wellness
Promotion major knows Jason
Wingert very well. He’s one
of the department’s many
professors who regularly
recruit students to help work
on real-world research projects.
Surain Subramaniam:
Students get a broader
worldview in Surain
Subramaniam’s classes. His
Asian Studies discussions are
packed with deeply relevant
cultural, economic, historical
and social insights from this
associate professor—and he
has an awesome sense of
humor, too.
“
...Education that
teaches students to
become their own best
and lifelong teachers.
”
— Fiske Guide to Colleges

closely
collaborative
Small classes. Accomplished professors. Hands-on learning.
You won’t find another university with a campus culture quite
like UNC Asheville. The university creates a purposefully personal
learning environment where professors invite students in to learn
and discover alongside them. And walking around our close-knit
campus, students, staff and professors frequently stop to chat or
even grab a cup of coffee together.
4 Your professors will know you by name.
4 Our classrooms feature more discussions than lectures.
4 All classes are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants.
4 Students are often chosen to serve as research assistants.
powerfully
engaged
Katherine Culatta ’13: For her undergraduate
research project, Katherine, a Biology major,
is conducting a study of native plants
that live on the Blue Ridge Mountains’
remote rock outcroppings. This data
will help set a baseline reading
for plant health as the Earth’s
climate continues to change.

Personalize your education through Undergraduate Research.
It’s the kind of academic freedom normally reserved for masters-level
students at other universities.
Some recent undergraduate research projects:
4 Predicting the effects of greenhouse gases
4 Uncovering spy organizations that fought racism in the 1900s
4 Finding what causes cancer to spread
4 Designing affordable, nutritious dietary plans for poor communities
4 Creating a series of paintings on human psychology and social interaction
4 Determining the economic value of indigenous mountain trout
Mesha Maren ’12 and Matt Owen ’12: Last year, these students spent six weeks
in Portland, Oregon, while attending an author’s writing seminar. That trip was
part of their undergraduate research project, in which they started a student-led
writer’s workshop on campus, called Redaction.
efreshingly smart
In this picture, Annelise DeJong ’12 is only a few minutes
away from graduation and a few weeks away from traveling
to Sri Lanka on a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship.
She admits that applying for the Fulbright hadn’t occurred
to her until a mentor/professor encouraged her to go for
it. It just goes to show that great things happen when
your professors know you well enough to feel invested
in your own success.

Ben McDonald

UNC Asheville alumni turn real-world
learning into real-life achievement.
Ben McDonald ’12: As a senior, Ben conducted
experiments with combretastatin, a cancer drug
that prevents bloodflow to tumors. Though he
worked with the guidance of his professors,
Ben was given enough creative room to be
the planner, architect and builder of all his
experiments. This year, he starts pursuing his
Ph.D. in chemistry at Northwestern University.
Caroline Dougherty
Caroline Dougherty ’10: As a New Media major
and Literature minor, Caroline learned how to
tell a story both visually and textually. Today,
she serves as science information designer
for the National Environmental Modeling and
Analysis Center. She works with the U.S. Forest
Service, NASA, National Climatic Data Center
and other organizations to ensure scientists’
findings are not just heard, but understood by
the general public.
Ricky Shriner ’12: Locus Technologies hired
Ricky as a software engineer right after
graduation. As a student, he helped the city of
Asheville on a project to show how 100-year
floods might affect the River Arts District. Ricky
used video game software to combine survey
data, flood data and GoogleEarth imagery to
demonstrate how riverside businesses will be
affected when the water rises.
Ricky Shriner
Tanya Harris ’06: When she arrived at UNC
Asheville, Tanya knew that she wanted to be a
lawyer, but she had no idea what kind of law to
pursue. Then she took a course with Psychology
Professor Pam Laughon, where she helped
successfully reverse a death penalty conviction.
Today, as an assistant public defender in
Mecklenburg County, Tanya represents clients
who can’t afford their own attorneys.
Private college experience
at a public university price.
Value is what you get out of an education, not how
much it costs. With small classes, individual attention
and rigorous academic experiences, UNC Asheville offers
a nationally ranked curriculum for a fraction of the cost
of comparable private universities. When our students
graduate, they average lower debt levels than the
majority of North Carolina public university attendees.
See how UNC Asheville compares nationally:
public colleges in the U.S.
4 Kiplinger’s Personal Finance: One of the nation’s
50 best values in public colleges, with the fifth lowest
total cost of attending per year on the list, and the
eighth lowest average debt among graduates.
4 U.S. News and World Report: Ranked 14th among
250 national liberal arts colleges for least debt among
2011 grads.
