Edible Oils and Fats
Because of her vast agricultural potential,
oilseeds and oleaginous fruits have always been
important products of Turkish agriculture. With the
implementation of the outward-oriented policy in
the 1980’s, many export-oriented edible oil plants
were established in Turkey. Owing to modern
refinery plants equipped with modern bottling
lines, the edible oil sector has become one of the
most progressive agro-industrial sectors in the
Turkish food industry.
Turkey has a large refining capacity for edible
oils, about 3,4 million tons, 30% of which is used
for margarine production. Major products of the
edible oil industry are the oils of seeds, beans
and oil-bearing fruits such as sunflower oil, corn
oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, hazelnut oil and
olive oil. Besides these products, margarine has
an important place in the production and exports
of the sector. Products are exported mostly as
refined and in retail packages. In Turkey, there are
compulsory standards for exports of edible oils, so
in all plants the production and exports conform
to the standards of the Turkish Standards Institute,
which are also consistent with the international
standards.

EDIBLE OILS AND FATS
Sunflower oil is one of the most important
products of the Turkish edible oil industry. It leads
the sector with a share about 50% of the sales
volume of edible oils in the domestic market. In
2008, the export value of sunflower oil reached
US$ 418,6 million, which has been an all time
record value. Iraq being the major partner, the
export destinations of Turkey has varied from
the Middle and Far Eastern countries to various
European and African countries.

As Turkish consumers like the taste of corn oil
due to its aromatic components, the production
and consumption of corn oil has increased over
the last few years. The export of this item also
showed a steady increase and reached important
quantities among the exports of the edible oil
sector. In 2009, major export destinations have
been Israel, Libya and Saudi Arabia which have
accounted for about 61% of exports.

Parallel to the growing demand
in the world, Turkey has started
to produce soybean oil, which
is supplied to both domestic
and foreign markets. Although
production is still in limited quantity,
exports of Turkish soybean oil
have gradually increased and new
export destinations have emerged
in recent years.
Among other edible oils,
cottonseed oil, a by-product of
processed cotton, is also produced
in Turkey and it has many uses
such as in the kitchen for cooking
purposes and in the food industry
for the production of margarine,
shortening, salad dressings and
commercially prepared fried
foods. Canola and peanut oils are
other minor products of the edible
oil industry in Turkey. Although the
consumption and export of these
items are insignificant, it seems
that they have the potential to rise
due to domestic and international
demand for these oils.
Furthermore, the oil pressed from
hazelnut is also regarded as a
good source of edible oil for
cooking, frying or baking foods.
Although the hazelnut is popular
worldwide as an edible nut, which
is good for health, hazelnut oil is
also gaining importance due to its
health aspects as well as its light
and unique flavor especially in
salad dressings.

Besides the seed oils, olive oil is another major
product of the edible oil industry in Turkey. Having
the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Sea,
Turkey enjoys the advantages of being one of
the major producers of olives and olive oil
in the world. Hence, within the last five
years, olive oil has been exported to
more than a hundred countries,
including major producer
countries that consume
or re-export Turkish olive
oil. Together with the EU
countries, the USA is the
major importer of olive oil
in the world and Turkey is
one of the important suppliers
of these countries.

Margarine exports have very important place in
edible oils and fats industry. Owing to its huge
production capacity, 450-500 thousand tons of
margarine is produced annually in Turkey. It is
accounted for US$ 205 million of export earnings
as a record value in 2008.
