Edible Oils and Fats
Because of her vast agricultural potential,
oilseeds and oleaginous fruits have always been
important products of Turkish agriculture. With the
implementation of the outward-oriented policy in
the 1980’s, many export-oriented edible oil plants
were established in Turkey. Owing to modern
refinery plants equipped with modern bottling
lines, the edible oil sector has become one of the
most progressive agro-industrial sectors in the
Turkish food industry.
Turkey has a large refining capacity for edible
oils, about 3,4 million tons, 30% of which is used
for margarine production. Major products of the
edible oil industry are the oils of seeds, beans
and oil-bearing fruits such as sunflower oil, corn
oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, hazelnut oil and
olive oil. Besides these products, margarine has
an important place in the production and exports
of the sector. Products are exported mostly as
refined and in retail packages. In Turkey, there are
compulsory standards for exports of edible oils, so
in all plants the production and exports conform
to the standards of the Turkish Standards Institute,
which are also consistent with the international
standards.
