SECTION 6 : INTEGRATION OF AYUSH IN THE HEALTH CARE<br />
SYSTEM UNDER NATIONAL RURAL HEALTH MISSION (NRHM)<br />
A<br />
fter <strong>the</strong> launch <strong>of</strong> NRHM, an <strong>in</strong>itiative has been taken by <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />
and Family Welfare and Dept <strong>of</strong> AYUSH for streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> health care facilities at<br />
all levels by <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g AYUSH systems <strong>in</strong> national health care delivery systems<br />
under NRHM.<br />
Physical and functional <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> AYUSH systems <strong>in</strong> NRHM is most<br />
important strategy <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g under NRHM. <strong>Integration</strong> is facilitated by<br />
appo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g or collocat<strong>in</strong>g AYUSH doctors & support<strong>in</strong>g staff and creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure accord<strong>in</strong>g to local needs. AYUSH doctors who are be<strong>in</strong>g appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />
are used to facilitate management <strong>of</strong> programmes, monitor<strong>in</strong>g and effective<br />
implementation <strong>of</strong> various <strong>in</strong>terventions under NRHM.<br />
As on March, 2008, <strong>the</strong>re were 642 districts, 6348 blocks and 638588 villages<br />
<strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g 570 District Hospitals (DHs), 4276 Community <strong>Health</strong> Centres<br />
(CHCs) and 23458 Primary <strong>Health</strong> Centres (PHCs) <strong>in</strong> India. The projected rural<br />
population <strong>of</strong> India for December, 2008 has been estimated as 8283.2 lakhs. On an<br />
average, 14.5 lakhs, 1.9 lakhs and 0.4 lakhs rural population had been served per<br />
District hospital, Community <strong>Health</strong> Centre, Primary <strong>Health</strong> Centre respectively.<br />

States hav<strong>in</strong>g less than 50% District hospitals co-located with AYUSH facilities was<br />
Uttarakhand only, whereas, <strong>the</strong>re had been no co-location <strong>of</strong>AYUSH facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Districts hospitals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 20 states and union territories.<br />

states hav<strong>in</strong>g less than 25% CHCs co-located with AYUSH facilities were Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and<br />
Karnataka. No co-location <strong>of</strong> AYUSH facilities had been observed <strong>in</strong> CHCs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 15 states and union<br />
territories.<br />
About 17.7% Primary <strong>Health</strong> Centres had been colocated<br />
with AYUSH facilities till 2008. The states/ union<br />
territories hav<strong>in</strong>g more than 50% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PHCs co-located with<br />
AYUSH facilities were Orissa, Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur,<br />
Tripura, Goa, Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Puducherry. States<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g more than 25% but less than 50% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PHCs colocated<br />
with AYUSH facilities were Chhattisgarh, West<br />
Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamilnadu. The states and union<br />
territories hav<strong>in</strong>g less than 25% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Primary <strong>Health</strong><br />
Centres co-located with AYUSH facilities were Dadra &<br />
Nagar Haveli, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.<br />
No co-location with AYUSH facilities had been observed <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> PHCs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 18 states and union territories.<br />

About 45.5 lakh <strong>of</strong> rural population were be<strong>in</strong>g served by each District hospital co-located with AYUSH facilities<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country as on 31.12.2008. About 26.7 lakh population per DH co-located with AYUSH facilities were served <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Maharashtra, whereas, 19.9 lakh and 15.1 lakh rural population were served per DH co-located with<br />
AYUSH facilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Karnataka and<br />
Rajasthan respectively. States where more than 5<br />
lakhs but less than 15 lakhs rural population were<br />
served per DH co-located with AYUSH facilities<br />
were <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh,<br />
Jharkhand and Uttarakhand. The states and union<br />
territories with less than 5 lakh rural populations<br />
gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir health care services per DH colocated<br />
with AYUSH facilities were Arunachal<br />
Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar<br />
Islands, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep and<br />
Puducherry.<br />
About 8.2 lakh <strong>of</strong> rural population were be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
served per Community <strong>Health</strong> Centre co-located<br />
with AYUSH facilities <strong>in</strong> 2008. About 15.3 lakh<br />
population per CHC co-located with AYUSH<br />
facilities were be<strong>in</strong>g served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Andhra<br />
Pradesh, whereas, 6.8 lakh, 6.5 lakh and 5.9 lakh<br />
rural population were be<strong>in</strong>g served per CHC colocated<br />
with AYUSH facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> states <strong>of</strong><br />
Rajasthan, Karnataka and Maharashtra<br />
respectively. The states and union territories with<br />
less than 1.5 lakh rural <strong>of</strong> population per CHC colocated<br />
with AYUSH facilities were Arunachal<br />
Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Andaman<br />
& Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar<br />

On an average, 2.0 lakh <strong>of</strong> rural population<br />
were be<strong>in</strong>g served per Primary <strong>Health</strong> Centre<br />
co-located with AYUSH facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country <strong>in</strong><br />
2008. About 7.1 lakh population per PHC colocated<br />
with AYUSH facilities were served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
states <strong>of</strong> Uttarakhand. About 2.8 lakh, 2.4 lakh<br />
and 2.0 lakh population per PHC co-located with<br />
AYUSH facilities were served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> states <strong>of</strong><br />
Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Dadra & Nagar<br />
Haveli respectively.. The states and union<br />
territories with less than 0.5 lakh <strong>of</strong> rural<br />
population per PHC co-located with AYUSH<br />
