VRPM POLICY IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE<br />

<strong>1.1</strong> <strong>Purpose</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>volunteer</strong> <strong>policies</strong><br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>volunteer</strong> <strong>policies</strong> is to enhance <strong>the</strong> quality, effectiveness and<br />

safety <strong>of</strong> SMP services through <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> guidance and direction to SMP staff<br />

and <strong>volunteer</strong>s.<br />

The <strong>volunteer</strong> <strong>policies</strong> are intended to support internal management. They do not<br />

constitute, ei<strong>the</strong>r implicitly or explicitly, a binding contractual or personnel<br />

agreement.<br />

The <strong>volunteer</strong> <strong>policies</strong> are consistent with, and support <strong>the</strong> mission <strong>of</strong>, <strong>the</strong> SMP,<br />

fostering <strong>the</strong> ethical, productive, and rewarding engagement <strong>of</strong> <strong>volunteer</strong>s in SMP<br />

services.<br />

Rationale<br />

This policy describes <strong>the</strong> broad intent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VRPM <strong>policies</strong>, which is to assist <strong>the</strong><br />

SMP in delivering safe services and to assist <strong>the</strong> SMP in ensuring that <strong>volunteer</strong><br />

time is productive and rewarding.<br />

Compliance<br />

• This policy is required.<br />

• This policy must be implemented by <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> June 2013.<br />

Implementation Plan<br />

1. No specific steps are required to implement this policy because it simply<br />

provides an overall rationale for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>policies</strong>.<br />

2. The language <strong>of</strong> this policy can be used to introduce <strong>the</strong> VRPM <strong>policies</strong> to<br />

<strong>volunteer</strong>s, because it provides <strong>the</strong> context in which <strong>the</strong> <strong>policies</strong> were created.<br />

The VRPM <strong>policies</strong> are not just a reaction to perceived risks; <strong>the</strong>y are, in fact,<br />

a much larger effort to ensure that <strong>volunteer</strong> time is not wasted and that<br />

beneficiaries receive quality services.<br />

3. This language can also be used to introduce <strong>the</strong> VRPM <strong>policies</strong> to SMP staff,<br />

VHOs, and organization leaders, giving <strong>the</strong>m a context that explains <strong>the</strong> intent<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>policies</strong>.<br />
