Isn’t t It Time to Talk About It? An African-American American Perspective on Holding onto Faith at the End of Life For many in the African-American American community, accepting the need for hospice and palliative care at the end of life can be seen as a sign of giving up, as a demonstration of a lack of faith. Heidi L. Barham, M. Div. Spiritual Care Coordinator Hospice of the Western Reserve In meeting the needs of African-American American patients, it is important to stress the idea that hospice care and faith/spirituality work hand-in in-hand. It is NOT an either/or proposition. Allowing hospice care at the end of life is NOT a surrendering of hope. It is the acceptance of a gift to make the most out of the life that the patient and family have been blessed with. OBJECTIVES • Describe the historical perspective of race and the impact of perceived health care disparities on end- of-life care in the African-American American community. • Identify factors influencing decision making for end-of of-life care within the African-American American Community. • Examine the role of hospice and palliative care at the end of life for patients and families in the African-American American community. • Explore ways to overcome objections and barriers to providing quality end of life care. The African-American American Experience: An Historical perspective • From slavery to civil rights • 1619 – First African slaves arrive in VA • 1787 – Slavery made illegal in Northwest Territory • 1793 – Fugitive slave law is enacted • 1820 – Missouri Compromise bans slavery north of the southern border of Missouri
