WORLD CUP
D E L H I 2 0 1 0
ROAD TO THE HERO HONDA FIH WORLD CUP
In this edition of the newsletter we are featuring former World Champions Netherlands and Africa’s
most successful side, South Africa.
The Dutch eager to lift the Trophy
The Netherlands are three time
winners of the World Cup, an
achievement that ranks second
only to Pakistan’s four triumphs.
They qualified for the Hero Honda
FIH 2010 World Cup by reaching
the semifinals of the 2009 Euro
Hockey Nations Tournament,
where they eventually finished
third.
The ultimate goal for the Dutch is
to lift the Hero Honda FIH World
Cup trophy on March 13. For
this purpose they will have to go
through nations that have had
their number in recent years:
Australia and Germany. Also,
they must fend off upstart
opponents like Argentina as well
as the dangerous Koreans. The
latter moved into the semi-finals
at the expense of Holland at the
2006 World Cup and also
haunted them in the ABN AMRO
Champions Trophy 2009.
Coach Michel van den Heuvel
will rely on the services of the
experienced Teun de Nooijer,
who will be participating in his
fifth World Cup, penalty corner
specialist Taeke Taekema and
goalkeeper Guus Vogels. Along
side them will be FIH 2005 Young
Player of the Year Robert van der
Horst, who has been emerging
steadily as the future ‘Oranje’
leader and Mink van der
Weerden, who has been lighting
up scoreboards in the past two
seasons of the Dutch top flight.
Not having reached a final in the
World Cup since 1998 does not sit
well with the incumbent decision
makers of Dutch hockey and a
country with more than 200,000
registered hockey players is
becoming impatient.
South Africa out to earn respect
South Africa are making their
fourth World Cup apperance
following participations in Sydney
1994, Kuala Lumpur 2002 and
Mönchengladbach 2006. South
Africa qualified for the Hero
Honda FIH World Cup 2010 by
defeating Egypt 3-1 in the final of
the 2009 Africa Cup, which took
place in Accra, Ghana.
Head coach Gregg Clark is
charged with the task to return
South Africa to respectability. Their
final placings in previous World
Cups have been at the lower end
of the classification table. In other
recent major competitions, South
Africa finished with the wooden
spoon at the Beijing Olympic
Games 2008 and 5th at the
Champions Challenge in
December 2009. Both tournaments
were played under Clark’s
tutelage. Clark and his troops
are once again up against the
world’s best and hope to put up
a respectable show. Not ranked
among the world’s top 12, Clark
must rely on ‘a few good men’.
One of those men is captain and
central defender Austin Smith,
who plays for Dutch Premier
League club Den Bosch and was
included in the FIH’s All-Star Team
for 2009. Another is the centre half
Lloyd Madsen, who also plies his
trade in the auspicious Dutch top
flight. In fact each member of the
squad will have to give their level
best for South Africa to create a
major impression at the Hero
Honda FIH World Cup 2010.
FIH Umpire Satinder Kumar shares his thoughts
Satinder Kumar from India has
officiated in the last 2 World
Cups, 2002 and 2006, as well as
the last 2 Olympic Games, 2004
and 2008. He has recently been
honoured with the “Golden
Whistle” award by the FIH for
completing 100 matches as an
umpire thus becoming first Indian
and 27th umpire to receive this
prestigious award.
We caught up with Satinder
Kumar asking him his views and
thoughts on hockey’s most
prestigious competition.
The Hero Honda FIH World Cup
2010 is taking place in Delhi,
India, your home country.
Naturally you must be looking
forward to it.
It is quite special that the
tournament is taking place in
India. I am pretty excited about
it. There is inspiration to perform
as well in front of your own
people. I guess there might be a
little pressure since all eyes would
be on me but I would like to see it
as more of a motivation to excel.
Your memories from the World
Cup in 2002 in Kuala Lumpur?
Firstly, I just could not believe that
I was selected for the World Cup
in Kuala Lumpur in 2002. Naturally
my first World Cup game on 24th
Feb 2002 between Netherlands
and New Zealand will remain in
my heart for life. I stood in a total
of 6 games and my confidence
grew after each game. It was an
unforgettable experience.
What about your recollections
from the World Cup in 2006 in
Monchengladbach? Any match
that stands out?
By now I had officiated in a one
World Cup and one the Olympic
Games (in Athens), so
understandably expectations
from me were high and so I did
feel a little pressure. The game
between Netherlands and
England stands out for me. It
was a tough, fierce and exciting
match with plenty of goals. It was
quite different to other matches
I had umpired in as far as World
Cup games are concerned as
this was a European affair and
the style of play is unlike the Asian
way with a lot more body play.
Which international game do you
remember the most as an umpire
and why?
It has to be the final of the
Champions Trophy 2006 between
Netherlands and Germany in
Terrassa, Spain. It was the final of
a very esteemed competition and
I was also the first Indian umpire
to officiate in a Champions Trophy
final.
What are the preparations for such a
mega event like the World Cup?
This is hockey’s biggest
competition. The concentration
has to be 100%. We umpires do have
to prepare mentally. We see lots of
videos of various matches and also
have fitness tests.
FIH Medical Update
Dr. Peter Wefers Bettink, chairman
of the FIH Medical Committee
and FIH Medical Officer for the
Hero Honda FIH World Cup,
visited New Delhi earlier in the
month to ensure there is
adequate medical coverage for
athletes and spectators
participating in the event.
He was satisfied with efforts put
in by Apollo Hospital Delhi which
is officially designated to be in
charge of all medical facilities at
the Stadium and also at the
hospital in case of serious
injuries to players. He is
furthermore pleased to have
Dr. Bharatinder Singh, Chief
Medical Officer, Commonwealth
Games 2010 and doctor to the Indian
national hockey teams for many
years, as the Local Medical Officer for
the Hero Honda FIH World Cup.
He also notes that “the staff of the
high class Apollo Hospital will support
us with all sorts of medical equipment
and a facility, which makes us feel
confident about providing the best
medical care for the Hero Honda
FIH World Cup event”. The facilities
and services include ambulances
and first aid rooms for the public and
the teams although Peter of course
“hopes they will be needed as little as
possible”.
Graphics Manual
A detailed Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 graphics
manual will be sent to all the hockey federations of
the respective countries participating in the
tournament. The Hero Honda FIH World Cup graphics
draws inspiration from the logo, helping create a
graphical image for the brand. The waves of
enthusiasm signify the energy of the crowd as well as
the sport itself and the pool of the circles symbolize
the passionate crowd and their cheerful mood. The
Graphic Manual has been created keeping in mind
the usage of the graphics on various elements that
will be used to promote the brand.
Accreditation for Teams and Officials
The Accreditation process for the Hero Honda FIH
World Cup 2010 has begun. Accreditation forms will
WORLD CUP
D E L H I 2 0 1 0
PLAYERS TO WATCH AT THE HERO HONDA FIH WORLD CUP
From this edition we will be profiling players who would make the difference for their team in their
quest for hockey’s ultimate prize.
Teun de Nooijer is one of the
greatest hockey players the
world has ever known. Incredibly
quick, skillful and an opportunistic
finisher in front of goal, he made
his international debut as an 18-
year-old and eventually became
the first male hockey player to
win the FIH Player of the Year
award three times (2003, 2005
and 2006).
Interestingly, he rates legendary
Dutch footballer Johan Cruijff as
a hero of his and says he tries to
imitate his great artistry on the
hockey pitch. He evens wears the
number 14 on his shirt that Cruijff
made so famous. Since his debut
in 1994, he has won a World Cup
Teun de Nooijer (Netherlands)
and two Olympic Trophy titles
with the Dutch team. Teun de
Nooijer will be participating in his
fifth World Cup, which is the most
among players appearing in
Delhi. The Dutch master has
netted at least once in each of
his previous four World Cup
appearances. De Nooijer
scored the golden goal in
Holland’s last World Cup
triumph in 1998.
The HC Bloemendaal player
was also part of the Dutch
team that won the 2007
European Championships in
Manchester and the silver
medal at the 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens. De Nooijer is
married to former German
international hockey player
and 1996 Atlanta Olympian
Philippa Suxdorf, and the pair
have three daughters.
Dutch defender Taeke Taekema
is a feared man at penalty
corners because of his wicked
drag flicks. He debuted for the
Netherlands as a 20-year-old in
a friendly match against Egypt in
2000, and later that year was a
Taeke Taekema (Netherlands)
member of the silver medalwinning
side at the 2004 Olympic
Games. He has won four
Champions Trophy titles with the
Dutch side (2000, 2002, 2003 and
2006) and in 2009 he became the
all-time top scorer in the
Champions Trophy. He was also
the top scorer of the 2006 World
Cup with 11 goals, thanks in no
small part to his five goals in the
match against India. In
Netherlands victorious campaign
at the 2007 European
Championship, he scored a
record 16 goals including
a double hat- trick against
neighbours Belgium in the
semi-finals. Taekema was part
of the Dutch side that finished
fourth at the 2008 Olympic
Games in Beijing. Taekema says
his boyhood hero was Taco van
den Honert who won gold with
the Dutch men’s hockey team at
the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
WORLD CUP
D E L H I 2 0 1 0
PLAYERS TO WATCH AT THE HERO HONDA FIH WORLD CUP
Ryan Archibald (New Zealand)
New Zealand former captain
Ryan Archibald is an outstanding
playmaker in midfield. He has
been the mainstay of the Black
Sticks engine room since
debuting in 1997 against
Malaysia. The team fell just short
of qualifying for Sydney 2000
and injury ruined his 2004 Athens
campaign as he attempted to
emulate his famous father, Jeff
Archibald, who was part of the
famous 1976 gold medal-winning
team at the Montreal Olympics
and is regarded as one of the
best to ever play for New
Zealand. Archibald and the Black
Sticks did qualify for the 2008
Olympics where they eventually
finished seventh. He has been
playing club hockey for H.C.
Rotterdam since 2006 and
recently won the BDO
Champions Challenge 1 with the
New Zealand team in Argentina.
Simon Child (New Zealand)
Simon Child burst onto the
international scene when he
made his debut as a 16-year-old
for the Black Sticks. He was the
second youngest player ever to
represent New Zealand at senior
level. Child had a frustrating
Olympic campaign in 2008 after
he suffered a broken finger just
prior to the tournament.
However, he still managed to
score four goals, including one in
New Zealand’s 4-2 victory over
Pakistan in the seventh-place
playoff. He was named New
Zealand’s Young Player of the
Year in 2007,
Barry Middleton (England)
Despite his relative young age
Middleton is already considered
a veteran for both England and
Great Britain. Having made his
debut in 2003, he has played in
two Olympic Games, helping
Great Britain to finish fifth in
Beijing. Middleton took up
hockey at age eight with the
Doncaster Hockey Club. It is little
wonder the forward started
playing hockey as both his
parents were hockey coaches.
Ashley Jackson (England)
Ashley Jackson was voted 2009
Men’s Young Player of the Year.
Jackson is the first ever England
player to win a WorldHockey
Player of the Year award.
Jackson is a talented midfielder
who made his international
debut for England in November
2006 and was the youngest
member of the Great Britain’s
squad at the 2008 Olympic
Games. Born in Chatham,
Jackson was influenced to take
up hockey by his father. He had
played ice hockey until age 10
and even represented England
at junior level in the sport.
Described as the ‘David
Beckham’ of English hockey,
Jackson now plays for the H.O.C.
Gazellen-Combinatie. He was
also a member of the England
squad the won the 2009
European Nations Cup.
