Despite its successes in the immediate aftermath of war in 1974, in generating<br />

employment and foreign exchange, the manufacturing sector changed little. The<br />

overall structure of the manufacturing sector remained predominantly small, low<br />

tech and family run, with low capital to labour ratios and low productivity. The<br />

main change, that followed the events of 1974, was in the proportions of output that<br />

was exported and the countries it was exported to. Significant government emphasis<br />

to both encourage growth and modernisation in manufacturing, particularly<br />

interventionist after 1974, made little impact on the industry in Cyprus (Figure 2.15<br />

above). Even in 1992 the largest sub-sector was stili Food, Beverages and Tobacco,<br />

with nearly a 30% share of gross output and stili largely dependent on the<br />

processing of locai agricultural products. The textiles, wearing apparel and leather<br />

goods sub-sector was the second largest contributor to manufacturing output and,<br />

together with Food, Beverages and Tobacco, they produced half the gross output of<br />
