By far the best retail location in the city
of Doha, CCD (City Center Doha) was
planned in the early 1990s, by business
entrepreneur and visionary, H.E. Sheikh
Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, when the
West Bay —Doha’s business centre— was
virtually non-existent. It inaugurated in
2001, and has since remained Qatar’s
leading shopping destination.
However, anticipating the emergence of
newer and larger shopping centres in the
region, PROMONTORIO was invited
to develop an in-depth Interior Design
renovation and brand reinforcement
project, whilst preserving CCD’s powerful
identity amongst Qataris.
The challenging brief called for an increase
of rents and shops sales revenues, an
intensification of the shopping experience,
expansion of GLA (Gross Leasing Area),
raising footfall and extending visiting time.
The project includes the renovation of
the existing Main Mall and Squares, in
addition to the creation of an entire New
Mall with a series of smaller piazzas
catered for a more high-end segment,
connected by skywalk to Qatar Convention
Centre and adjoining the new 5-star
hotels Marriott Courtyard & Renaissance,
Shangri-la and Merweb Grand City Centre.
The proposed concept subtly evokes the
History and Traditions of Qatar for the
Main Mall and Squares resorting to images
of Bedouin culture, of the Desert, of
Falconry, and of the Oasis. For the New
Mall, which will have an entirely new
tenant-mix, the 5 elements (Wood, Fire,
Earth, Metal and Water) were chosen to
coincide with the 5 piazzas, differentiated
both by shape (Round, Square, Rombo,
Oval, Triangle), and by the use of
correlated colours, materials and patterns,
creating a unique identity in each.
