New technology tools enter classroom in upcoming school year
Each school year brings new and exciting technology tools into our
instruction and classroom activities as well as expanding ways we use
current tools. Here are brief notes of what’s ahead for teachers and
students this year!
School Fusion is our teacher webpage tool for elementary and
Summit teachers. Teachers began learning how to build content
into School Fusion in February and their sites will go live this fall.
Students and parents will have access to classroom news, online
resources, and files. The site can also host classroom audio and
video projects. Teachers can also use the site’s blogging tool to have
students participate in private online blogs.
Moodle is an online content tool that middle school and high
school teachers are using to host course content and online activities.
Moodle includes a variety of tools: forum, online submission of
assignments, web links, handout/file repository, wiki, choice, and
chat room. Secondary teachers are continuing with building content
in their Moodle course as a supplement to classroom materials and
activities.
Heartland AEA provides schools with a vast selection of
online resources that span all Gr levels and content areas. These
tools include: research databases, online books, online application
tutorials, clipart, content videos, AP images, free sound effects and
New Law Regarding Concussions
The Iowa Legislature passed a new
law in regards to concussions and
students in Grades 7-12 who participate
in extracurricular interscholastic
activities.
Students participating in
interscholastic athletics, cheerleading
and dance and their parents/guardians
must sign an acknowledgement form and
return it to their school. Students cannot
practice or compete in those activities
until this form is signed and returned.
This law requires that a child must be
immediately removed from participation
(practice or competition) if his/her
coach or a contest official observes
signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent
with a concussion or brain injury in an
extracurricular interscholastic activity.
That child may not participate
again until a licensed health care
provider trained in the evaluation and
management of concussions and other
brain injuries has evaluated him/her
and the student has received written
clearance from that person to return to
participation.
The Activities/Athletic Office asks
that you turn in your form(s) to their
office by August 1. If you have further
questions, contact the Activities/Athletic
Office at 278-2407.
The fact sheet about this new
legislation and acknowledgement form
can be found at www.johnston.k12.ia.us/
schools/concussionfactsheet2011.pdf.
www.johnston.k12.ia.us/communications/theconnection
music, news, encyclopedia, and a safe search engine. These provide
educationally sound resources for students to use both at school and at
home. Those resources can be found at http://media.aea11.k12.ia.us/
HAEA11Media. Each school has a unique username and password;
these can be obtained from classroom teachers or the School
Librarian.
Elementary students will continue using iPods for listening to books
and recording audio and video. We use the iPods with our language
arts reading program. iPods are loaded with the Gr level content
books, where students can hear the audio and follow along with the
story in their books. Students practice reading by recording their
voice and then playing it back to hear their fluency.
Other tools continuing to be used in our classrooms and libraries are
laptops, document cameras, classroom response systems (clickers),
electronic microscopes and probes, calculators, digital cameras/
camcorders, and much more!
Our science curriculum has gone through a review process and this
year there will be implementation of enhanced technology tools in our
science curriculum.
Our students’ technology experiences continue to expand every year
with new activities, resources and tools.
The
Connection
Together everybody accomplishes more
The The Connection newsletter is for published the residents four of times the Johnston per year. Community Please note School that the District
newsletter is now labeled as Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall instead of
January, March, May and August.
It is an exciting time as students and
school staff prepare for the new school year.
Despite numerous challenges facing the
district, we anticipate our students having
another very productive year. The Johnston
School community has come to expect
nothing less than a quality educational
experience for each and every child. We
have every intention of providing success
for all students.
Johnston Schools continue to be
recognized as one of the highest achieving
districts in the metro and state of Iowa. It is
rewarding to see the accomplishments of so
many outstanding students and staff. There
are a multitude of good things that have
occurred inside and out of the classroom in
our district. Through the district’s focus on
continuous improvement, our schools are
positioned to meet the future learning needs
of each and every student.
While the district has experienced
much success, there is still ample room
for improvement. Expectations for the
success of our students has never been
higher. Through shared commitment,
thoughtful planning and by developing a
strong accountability system we believe
our community can continue to improve
the educational programs offered by the
Johnston Community School District.
Our staff is committed to developing and
revising our instructional methods to better
meet the individual learning needs of all
students. We recognize that your children
are our most important possession, and we
will treat them as such. We also understand
the role parents play in the educational
success of their children and the need
for active partnership between home and
school.
As we face these challenging times in
education, it remains essential that we
focus on effective communication with our
various stakeholders. To that end, we will
be undertaking a process this year to review
the district’s strategic plan. The Board of
Education, staff, parents and district patrons
will all be called upon to participate in
this most important matter. The district
will be conducting conversations with the
community this fall, which will be centered
around a series of focused questions.
The development and implementation of
the district’s strategic plan establishes a
blueprint for future school improvement.
Look for more specific information this fall
on how you can participate in the renewal
of the district’s strategic planning process.
I believe strongly that every employee,
every parent and every community member
has a function in the greater purpose of
helping all of our students achieve. As
I begin my sixth year as superintendent,
I want to stress to you the importance of
having effective teachers. I believe each
of us has an obligation to do whatever
we can to support, encourage and further
develop our teachers because no matter
what we strive for as a community, the
magic happens each day in the district’s
classrooms. Our goal is to become a true
professional learning community, where
we are working collaboratively to create a
vibrant future for our district.
We welcome any suggestions, ideas,
concerns and opinions you might have on
how we can make the Johnston Community
School District a more effective place for
our students. We look forward to another
great year in 2011-2012.
JMS/JHS Mock Trial Coach
From the nominator(s):
“For 21 years, Mr. Sanders dedicated his time
and energy to coach Johnston middle school
Mentoring program has new name
The Johnston school-based mentoring
program (formerly known as TeamMates)
now has a new name - the Johnston YoUth
Mentoring Program or JUMP!
Mentors, students and school staff
members will see very few changes in
the program that has been in place in the
Johnston Schools since 2004. Students in
grades 5-12 will continue to be matched
with volunteer community mentors.
Mentors will meet with students for
approximately one hour per week during
the school day. Program staff members will
also continue to work with students in the
www.johnston.k12.ia.us/communications/theconnection
same capacity as previous years.
New mentors are needed to help meet
the needs of Johnston students. If you have
one hour each week to devote to making a
difference in the life of a Johnston student,
the JUMP program just might be right for
you! Training and support for mentors is
provided.
If you are interested in receiving a mentor
application or have questions, please contact
Chris Wilson, Program Coordinator at 986-
The Connection 5
Prepare your child for school
General reminders for the years prior to kindergarten
Provide your child with time,
availability, and love. You have many
demands on your time and may live in a
rushed and time-pressured world. It may
be hard to turn off the pressures once at
home. Yet your child’s self-confidence and
motivation to succeed and to respond to
challenges can be enhanced if he knows you
are available for the moments when he feels
fragile and needs comfort. He also needs
to feel important enough to you to share his
everyday accomplishments and wonder about
the world. Availability, nurturing, and support
take time and are ideally provided without
other preoccupations.
Kind words are important. Your child’s
motivation is increased when her efforts are
rewarded by kind, encouraging words, even if
she did not succeed. Showing disappointment
in a harsh way when your child’s efforts are
unsuccessful may make her unwilling to try
again.
Don’t push. Introduce new skills naturally
in small doses, making them fun through
conversations and play. If learning a new
skill is not fun for your child, it is likely that
you are trying too hard or that the skill is too
difficult for her to master at this point. Come
back to it at a later time.
Small surprise rewards are helpful.
They reinforce learning. They are not bribes,
because your child receives them after the
accomplishment, not before.
We learn best by doing. Your child learns
best about concepts like the number five
by counting five crayons or raisins rather
than from a verbal explanation. Likewise,
he will learn how to say “thank you”
from reinforcement and reminders at the
appropriate moments (e.g., when being given
a cookie) rather than from a speech about
manners.
Repetition works. Skills are habits that
take time to form and are acquired best
through reasonable repetition.
Value questions. Often, questions take
more initiative and are more beneficial
than answers. Praise your child for asking
questions. It’s OK if you don’t know the
answers. You can try to find the answer
together with your child (e.g., by looking a
word up in the dictionary).
Make learning a joy. When your child
knows that learning is a joy, she has received
a gift that will last a lifetime.
Kindergarten” by Florence Karnofsky and
Fall 2011
Congratulations to the Little
Dragons Preschool and Little
Explorers programs for earning
NAEYC accreditation for the
second time. The National
Association for the Education of
Young Children (NAEYC) is the
nation’s leading organization of
early childhood professionals.
To earn NAEYC Accreditation,
the programs went through an
extensive self-study process,
measuring the programs and
its services against the ten
NAEYC Early Childhood
Program Standards and more
than 400 related Accreditation
Criteria. NAEYC Accreditation
also requited on-site visits by
NAEYC Assessors to ensure that
the program meets each of the
ten program standards. NAEYC
lasts for a five-year period.
Congressman Leonard
Boswell announced that Janelle
Springs, Colorado. “Every year
I look forward to announcing
outstanding student leaders such
as Janelle, who wish to serve
in and help lead our nation’s
armed forces. She has excelled
academically and has served as
a role model for many younger
students. It is always refreshing
to see that values of commitment
and patriotism are still alive in
today’s young leaders,” said
Boswell, a 20-year veteran of
the Army. Janelle Galang is the
daughter of Tammy and Emerito
Galang. She will enter the Air
Force Academy this summer to
pursue her undergraduate degree
and become a commissioned
officer in the United States Air
Force. Receiving a congressional
or military-affiliated nomination
is required in order to be
considered for admission to the
prestigious United States Military
Academy. Military Academy
