Model 404B Infrared Phototach
The Model 404B Infrared
Phototach is recommended for
indoor/outdoor use. It can be
powered directly from the
analyzer or, for extended
measurement sessions, with
the optional battery pack.
When used with Emerson’s
Machinery Health Analyzers,
the phototachs provide a tach
reference signal for applications
that include measurement of
turning speed, synchronous
time averaging, machinery
balancing, phase tracking,
and coastdown/startup analysis.
The Model 404B Infrared
Phototach is a self-contained,
infrared, reflective sensor. It is
relatively immune to ambient light
sources. As a result, it is ideal
for outdoor use in areas where
reflected light and glare cause
conventional phototachs to
function poorly. It provides direct
readings up to 20,000 RPM at
distances up to 3 feet. Distance
varies with RPM.
The phototach’s small, effective
beam [1/2” (1.27 cm) diameter
at 1’ (30.48 cm) from the lens]
makes it a good choice for
sensing relatively small objects.
Its visible red light also makes
it extremely easy to align.
The Model 404B is fully protected
against moisture and other
contamination, and conforms to
NEMA standards 1, 2, 3, 3S, 4,
4X, 12, and 13. For convenience,
the Model 404B can be powered
directly from an analyzer. The
optional Model 408 Battery Pack
may also be used with the Model
404B for extended usage or for
use in sunlit areas.

Reinforced Valox housing, totally encapsulated, acrylic lenses, O-ring
sealing, stainless steel screws. Meets NEMA standards 1, 2, 3, 3S, 4X, 12,
and 13.
“Light to Dark ” switch and 15-turn slotted brass screw GAIN (sensitivity)
adjustment potentiometer with clutch at both ends to travel. Both controls
located on rear panel of sensor and protected by a gasketed acrylic cover.
The minimum tape length required for the Model 404B phototach to see a pulse
is determined by the following formula:

connecting to both the CSI 2130 Machinery Health Analyzer (Turck
connection) and older model analyzers (BNC connection).
■ D24862 CSI 2130 Tach Input Cable, BNC to Turck, 4' long
■ D24861 CSI 2130 Tach Input Cable, 404B connector to Turck,
2 meters long.
■ Balancing Compass: Magnetically mounted, clockwise and counterclockwise
0-360° scaling. Used to assist in locating angular position.
■ Weight Kit: Reusable, clamp on trial weight kit.
■ Field Balance Scales: Portable, digital scales.
