Secure Switching
ServSwitch Secure KVM Switches with USB
Combat security threats with these EAL4+ tested
The ServSwitch Secure KVM Switches with
USB are EAL4+ certified and TEMPEST approved
(except SW2008A-USB-EAL and SW4008-USB-
EAL). They surpass the security profiles of most
other KVM switches. These new switches have
been evaluated for Common Criteria Evaluation
Assurance to Level 4+ (EAL4+). Common Criteria
is an international standardised process for
information technology security evaluation,
validation, and certification. The Common Criteria
scheme is supported by the National Security
Agency through the National Information
Assurance Program (NIAP).
The ServSwitch Secure KVM Switches with
USB provide control and separation of up to
four PCs connected to secure and unsecure
networks through just one keyboard, monitor,
and mouse. Users can safely switch among as
many as four computers operating at different
classification levels without worry.
Features include:
• High port-to-port electrical isolation, which
facilitates data separation (RED/BLACK).
• The low radiated emissions profile meets
the appropriate national requirements.
• Switches are permanently hard wired,
preventing access from one CPU or
network to the others.
• External tamper-evident seals.
• Channel-to-channel 60-dB crosstalk isolation
protects against signal snooping.
• Supports DVI-I video, which is DC balanced
and may be encoded for security.
• Provides robust isolation between networks,
so they’re ideal for government applications
that access classified networks in addition
to public networks such as the Internet.
• WARRANTY — 2 Years.
Why ServSwitch Secure KVM
Switches with USB?
1. Prevent data leaking between
ports and to the outside world.
2. Prevent sensitive data from being
stored in the device.
3. Prevent electronic snooping.
C
Threats/Solutions
1. Prevent data leaking between
ports and to the outside world.
Threat: Microprocessor malfunction or
unanticipated software bugs cause
data to flow between ports.
Solution: Unidirectional keyboard and mouse
data flow is enforced by hardware “data
diodes” so data isolation doesn’t rely on
software integrity. This makes it impossible
for the computer to send data along the
keyboard and mouse signaling channel. This
advanced design also ensures data isolation
through hardware and prevents the keyboard
and mouse interfaces from becoming covert
computer-to-computer signaling channels
because of software holes or unanticipated
bugs.
In addition, keyboard and mouse devices
can only be enumerated at the keyboard and
mouse ports. Any other USB peripherals, such
as a USB thumb drive, will be inhibited from
operating, preventing any uploading or
downloading of data.
Threat: Physical proximity between ports
enables data leakage.
Solution: Isolation is improved by placing
the red and black ports at the opposite
edges of the switch.
Threat: Accidental port switching.
Solution: Locked-down operation disables
all keyboard hotkey and mouse switching
functions in both software and hardware
so that data corruption can’t inadvertently
cause an unanticipated channel change.
The only way to change the channel is
with the front-panel keys. There is only one
button per channel, so channel selection is
clear. Colour-coded visual feedback confirms
the channel selection.
Threat: Signaling by shorting the power supply
or loading the power.
Solution: Each port is independently powered
by its USB port. Shorting the power supply
on one port will not cause the power on the
other ports to be switched off. The shared
keyboard, mouse, and monitor circuitry are
powered by the power supply. The lack of a
common power supply minimises electronic
signaling.
Threat: Detection of signals on one computer by
monitoring for crosstalk (leakage) signals on
another computer.
Solution: Minimum crosstalk separation of
60 dB provided between signals from one
computer and input or I/O signals to another.
There are no connections to sensitive
analogue inputs, such as computer
microphone ports. Microphone circuitry
enables sensitive recording of small analogue
signals. Even very low crosstalk levels could be
recorded and act as a means by which a
non-selected computer could read data being
sent to another computer.
Threat: Timing analysis attacks (looking at
what happens on one port to determine
data flow patterns on another).
Solution: Only one computer is connected
at a time to any shared circuitry. Links are
unidirectional, preventing timing analysis.
Threat: Electromagnetic emissions.
Solution: Special low emissions cables are used
to minimise radiated electromagnetic signal
leakage. Filtered power connections minimise
emissions down the power lines.
2. Prevent data from being stored
in the device.
Threat: Data transfer by means of common
storage or common RAM.
Solution: Shared circuitry, and the keyboard and
mouse, are powered down at each channel
change to clear all volatile memory of any
previous connections. This erases the entire
RAM, preventing residual data from remaining
in the channel and being transferred to
another computer. In addition, the USB host
controller and the shared USB peripherals are
also powered down, reset, and re-enumerated.
This ensures no residual data transfer.
3. Prevent electronic snooping.
Threat: Subversive snooping by detecting
electromagnetic radiation emitted from
the equipment.
Solution: The shielded metal case features
double shielding in critical areas and a low
emissions profile to thwart eavesdropping.
Threat: Physically tampering with the switch.
Solution: The switch is designed with
tamperproof seals to be fitted over the
countersunk screws.
The ServSwitch Octet offers server
management at its best with all the control
and security features you need!
The included Octoware control software
enables you to monitor complete system setup
via IP access, scan connected devices, edit user
profiles, and flash upgrade system components.
Octoware also monitors and stores the entire
system’s switching activities and logins, providing
you with a great deal of security. And you can
control the ServSwitch Octet via SNMP.
The system in detail.
The system consists of the ServSwitch, a User
Station, and Server Access Modules (SAMs).
Connect them all by using CAT5 or higher cable.
The Basic User Station offers video resolutions
up to 1024 x 768. The Enhanced-Video User
Station adjusts for skew between RGB signals and
offers video resolutions up to 1280 x 1024.
Use the USB User Station with Serial/Audio
Support with a PS/2 or USB keyboard and mouse.
It offers video resolutions up to 1280 x 1024.
For each attached CPU, you need one SAM.
Each SAM is a matchbox-size unit with KVM
connectors on the end of a pigtail cable.
The SAM draws little to no power, ensures
keep-alive functionality, provides keyboard
and mouse emulation, and is independent of
the switching system’s status.
The Dual RJ-45 SAMs with Audio/Serial
RS-232 Support enable two users to share access
to one CPU. They provide redundant system setup,
eliminating a single point-of-failure risk. They also
transfer stereo audio to the user station and
mono audio back to the attached CPU.
ColdLogik Cabinets
When cooling is everything.
sales@blackbox.co.uk | www.blackbox.co.uk
The Black Box range of ColdLogik cabinets
feature a water cooling system that effectively
reduces the heat generated by equipment at
source without the usual risk of leaks. Water and
electricity obviously do not go well together, and
traditional systems do not offer any solution for
the possibility of water leakage, an effect that
would be devastating to a cabinet of live
equipment.
The ColdLogik range of cabinets employ a
‘pull’ pump for the water cooling system, rather
than the traditional ‘push’ pumping system. This
ensures that if a leak occurred, air is sucked into
the pipe work rather than water spilling out. This
type of pump system is called a negative pressure
system, as there is no ‘positive’ pressure forcing
the water out of the pipe. Instead, the sucking
effect of the pump pulls the water through the
entire system, and leaks will only serve to add air
into the flow. The air is removed from the pipes
further down the chain.
Due to the high efficiency of the cooling
system, the water temperature can be much
higher than the traditional 6°C. This means a
smaller chiller size may be employed, reducing
both capital expenditure and ongoing running
costs, and increasing the availability of energy
efficient ‘free cooling’. The water temperature
may be comfortably set between 14°C and 22°C
and yet still achieve the maximum heat
dissipation of 45kW. The requirement for a
smaller chiller reduces the typical energy
consumption down by 35%, for a further 60% in
energy savings. When these savings are added
together, an energy saving of over 90% can be
achieved.
These energy savings can be equated directly
to qualifying companies, as a recognised
reduction in Carbon Footprint and therefore
taxation benefits through the Carbon Trust and
the Enhanced Capital Allowance Schemes
initiatives. To add further savings, because the
water temperature is higher than the traditional
6°C, there is no need to purchase condensation
prevention equipment as there is no chance of
condensation forming at the water temperatures
used. Capital expenditure is a major issue with
any new build or new requirement, but for green
field sites, the decision is now a no brainer. The
Black Box range of ColdLogik cabinets requires
no false floor for cooling ducts, and no hot aisle
or cold aisle containment systems. They lose no
‘U’ space from within the cabinet and require
space at the side of the cabinet, thus offering the
best solution for requirements where space is a
real issue. This makes the range ideal for installing
into cabinets that are already being used. With
no demand for under floor space or over cabinet
ducting, these cabinets provide the ideal solution
at a cost effective price.
Power Distribution Units
Enhanced IP Controlled Switchable PDUs
Improve uptime, capacity planning and power use efficiency.
• Metering of each outlet and the complete
PDU.
• Remote access and switching via web
browser.
• Secure access through 256-bit AES encryption.
• Staggered power switching to relieve surges.
• Power consumption monitoring through the
LCD screen.
• Temperature and humidity sensors available.
• WARRANTY — 1 Year.
The Black Box range of intelligent power distribution units give you
the ability to manage all your power requirements from the comfort of
your desk. These PDUs have an IP browser interface built-in, allowing the
user to switch on, switch off or power cycle each socket individually.
Featuring both serial access as well as IP access, these PDUs give you the
connectivity and control you need. But more than that, these PDUs also
feature real time power usage display through both the built-in LCD
screen via push buttons, and via the web browser interface. Information
on voltage, current drawn etc is available on a per port, and a per PDU
basis. This information can really improve capacity planning within both
the individual cabinet, and throughout the entire data centre, simplifying
the process of ensuring adequate power supply and also providing
remote access. By employing a user-configurable time delay per port, a
PDU can intelligently avoid brown-outs and black-outs. This feature can
also be used to provide power sequencing to a cabinet or rack.
Security
To reassure the data centre manager, access to the web browser
interface is protected by 256-bit AES encryption and strong passwords.
These PDUs also support advanced external permission management by
employing LDAP/S, RADIUS and Active Directory ® , where required. The
browser interface supports HTTP, HTTPS, IPMI, SMASH-CLP, SH, Telnet
and SNMP.
Applications
• Servers can be rebooted remotely - eliminating the need for travel to the
data centre.
• Power utilisation figures simplify the task of managing power
distribution within the cabinet and the data centre.
• Configurable alarm parameters can be set on a per port basis.
• Individual user rights, secure access on a per port basis.
The brains of your environmental monitoring system
The AlertWerks ServSensor is the central hub of the AlertWerks
environmental monitoring system. Connect it to your network, attach
AlertWerks sensors, and you’re ready to remotely view the status of your
data centres and other facilities. Check for temperature, humidity, and
liquids. Know when server cabinet doors are open or closed and whether
the cabinet is overheating. Use it for remote monitoring and management
of a wide range of devices such as HVAC systems, security equipment, UPSs,
generators, and industrial equipment.
ServSensor
The basic ServSensor features eight autosensing RJ-45 ports
for connecting any of the Intelligent Sensors.
ServSensor Junior
For small installations, choose the ServSensor Junior. With only two
sensor ports, it’s an economical way to watch over limited areas like
wiring closets.
ServSensor Contact
Use the ServSensor Contact with equipment and devices that use dry
contact outputs to send alarm signals. The ServSensor Contact is adaptable
to a wide range of devices such as UPSs, other remote monitoring systems,
and building management systems.
The hub comes with eight autosensing RJ-45 ports for connecting
any of the Intelligent Sensors plus 20 or 60 additional 2-wire, dry-contact
ports. These specially designed ports enable you to make your own
dry-contact cables quickly and easily.
The ServSensor Contact is rackmountable on standard 19" rails and
includes rackmount ears.
The built-in database maintains a time-stamped log of all events, so you
can go back to see what happened and when it happened. The integrated
data collection and graphing package is especially useful for providing
historical information for analysis.
12
Active alarming
In addition to enabling you to passively monitor sensors, the AlertWerks
ServSensor actively alerts you when sensors exceed limits you determine.
It can send alerts via SNMP or by e-mail.
Nice and easy
The ServSensor installs in minutes. Simply assign an IP address
and connect to the embedded Web server. Plug in any of our AlertWerks
Intelligent Sensors and the ServSensor’s autosensing feature will recognise
the type and automatically configure the sensor.
• WARRANTY — 1 Year.
Protect even your most sensitive facilities with
The Intelli-Pass Biometric Access Control system is a flexible, affordable
way to upgrade security for data centres and other secure areas.
The Intelli-Pass uses fingerprint recognition in a compact and attractive
design that is easy to install, simple to use, extremely reliable and very
secure. There are no cards or tokens to lose (or to spend money replacing).
Intelli-Pass is ideal for any access control application, including:
• Information systems departments
• Hospital/medical records storage rooms
• Storage facilities containing chemicals and supplies
• Government offices and federal buildings
• Critical physical plant areas in corporate or education environments
• High-tech, biomedical and R&D labs in government or university settings
• Library areas containing archival and rare book collections
• Military and defence-related installations
Tight security.
A unique two-part architecture makes Intelli-Pass the ultimate in
secure access control. The reader and controller units are separate,
so there are no connections in the reader unit exposed to the outside.
Because all the mechanics for opening the secured door are within the
protected area, hackers can’t cut the wires or spoof the signals to open
the door. Plus, proprietary encryption protects communications between
the reader and the controller, further enhancing security.
A person forced to enter a room against his/her will, can discretely
activate a silent alarm. Even if the power fails, Intelli-Pass is prepared with a
backup battery that provides up to eight hours of limited use.
Fingerprint identity simplifies administration.
Enrolling users couldn’t be easier. When a person is entered into
the Intelli-Pass system, the system creates a multipoint schematic of
the user’s biometric fingerprint profile, which it stores as a fingerprint
template. Each time that user seeks access to a secure area, that template
will be matched to the live fingerprint. The system does not store fingerprint
images, and the biometric template cannot be used to create
an image of the original print.
The multistage fingerprint verification goes beyond pattern recognition.
The Intelli-Pass actually looks for “life” in the finger and rejects pictures
of or silicon imprints of a finger. The system has an extremely high level
of accuracy and reliability (EER

advanced biometrics — and reduce costs, too.
Standalone access control for isolated installations
and ultimate security.
When your installation doesn’t require centralised control of multiple
access points or when ultra-high security prevents any network connections,
select the standalone Intelli-Pass (SAC510SA). In this case, all programming —
including user enrollment — is performed via the reader’s keypad and LCD
display via simple-to-use menus.
Networked access control for easy administration from anywhere.
The Intelli-Pass Biometric Access Control networked model (SAC510NA)
enables you to control and monitor hundreds or thousands of doors from
a central location.
Controller units attach to their site’s computer network or private
network using standard IP addresses and communicate with central control
stations with encrypted TCP/IP. User enrollment can occur at one central
location, using the Intelli-Pass Management and Enrollment Software
(SAC500MSA). The software enables you to easily manage and control
multiple Intelli-Pass units installed on multiple doors. Instead of having to
enroll users on each door separately, you can enroll once, then use that
information for each relevant door. Additionally, the software makes the creation
of user groups and door access zones a much easier process. You can
set up and configure each networked unit, and upload fingerprint templates
to any networked units to grant user access to them.
What you’ll need:
The first step is to choose a networked or standalone system. If you
choose a networked system, you’ll need to select your software package
based on the number of doors you wish to secure.
If your doors don‘t already have electric strikes, we can help you select
the correct Electric-Strike or Mag-Locks for the specific types of doors in
your facility. Optional on-site installation and/or configuration services are
available — call our FREE Tech Support hotline at 0118 965 6000 to get
started.
Network Performance Enhancement
Opti-WAN
When you give Internet traffic a boost, customers
• Get 30 to 500% faster Web page displays,
thin-client screen refreshes, and file
downloads.
• Because it accelerates from the server side
only, there’s no need to modify end-user
browsers or PCs.
• Patented TCP algorithms speed up Web
sites.
• Also accelerates FTP, AJAX,
prog ressive download, and streaming
video over TCP.
• Accelerates Internet connections ranging
from 1.5 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
• Works without caching or compression.
• WARRANTY — 1 Year.
In today’s competitive environment, your Web
site can make the difference between success
and failure — if the site’s not working for your
customers, they’re not going to stick around to buy.
Gomez — a leader in Web performance —
analysed more than 150 million page views over
150 Web sites and found that a slowdown
in page response time from 2 to 10 seconds
increased page abandonment by 38 percent.
In other words, you can lose more than a
third of your customers if you have a slow-loading
Web site.
Opti-WAN improves the performance of TCPbased
traffic on the Internet, so your Web sites
load faster, files transfer faster, and video streams
faster. It’s totally transparent to the end user and
requires no client software or browser plug-ins.
Why more bandwidth isn’t the answer
Throwing more bandwidth at Internet slowdowns
usually doesn’t work. Because the Internet
itself is a finite pipeline and often slowed by TCP,
which can add delays of up to several seconds,
adding more bandwidth at your end may not
make your customers’ Web pages load faster.
Adding more bandwidth is somewhat like trying
to get more water through a pipe — just adding
more water doesn’t get it through the pipe any
faster, you need to add pressure.
Opti-WAN makes TCP more efficient, so data
travels through the Internet more quickly, moving
faster in much the same way as water travels faster
through a pipe when you add more pressure.
How Opti-WAN works
Because TCP was developed when modems
were standard, it’s not optimised to provide
maximum throughput. Opti-WAN takes advantage
of the fact that TCP is inherently inefficient, and
tweaks it to maximise throughput and make data
travel the Internet more quickly.
Opti-WAN uses three different patented
algorithms that work together to increase
the efficiency of TCP:
• FastStart intelligently accelerates TCP slowstart
based on connection delay-jitter.
• HyperBurst dynamically adjusts receiver
windows to maximise throughput.
• FastTCP dynamically adjusts data transfer
rates to match congestion levels.
Opti-WAN doesn’t require anything of the
end user — it’s totally transparent to receiving
computers — and it doesn’t rely on caching or
compression schemes that can tie up resources
on your customers’ PCs. Serving from the origin
makes Opti-WAN a remarkably simple solution
requiring no extra technology at endpoints,
remote data centres or co-location facilities,
and no modifications to servers or to
applications.
Opti-WAN is simple to set up — connect it
in-line between your servers and your firewall.
Once configured, it provides real-time analysis
and monitoring of acceleration performance.
An Opti-WAN for every size
Opti-WAN comes in models for any level
of Internet traffic. Select a model based on the
speed of your Internet connection. Each model is
optimised to provide acceleration for that speed.
Compact desktop models are ideal for use
for branch office communications or for servers
hosting low-traffic Web sites. They can even
be used at home by power users who regularly
upload large files. These models support speeds
of up to 8 Mbps.
Opti-WAN models housed in 1U rackmount
chassis are suitable for data centres, enterprise
networks, large branch offices, and businesses
such as photo studios and medical imaging labs
that handle many very large files. These larger
models support Internet connections of 15 Mbps
to 1 Gbps.
All Opti-WAN models feature two bridged
10-/100-/1000-Mbps Ethernet ports for acceleration
plus an Ethernet and a USB port for management.
Manage Opti-WAN through any Web browser via
the embedded Web server or integrated into your
SNMP-managed network.
Opti-WAN may be clustered for high availability
and redundancy.
Opti-WAN accelerates anything
that runs on top of TCP
• Small files (JavaScript source code,
thumbnail images)
• Interactive and personalised content
(AJAX, XHR)
• Remote desktop (Citrix ® ICA ® , Microsoft ®
Opti-WAN works well for:
• Data that travels a long distance over the Internet. The more nodes data travels through,
the more Opti-WAN is going to improve data transfer.
• Applications that use TCP — including HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and e-mail — across the Internet.
• Dynamic site acceleration for your retail Web site, enabling customers to load pages more quickly.
• Desktop virtualisation (Citrix ® , RDP, KVM-over-IP): Put an end to annoying lags and frozen
screens.
• Transfer of large data files such as high-resolution photos, video, and medical images.
• Backup/disaster recovery: Opti-WAN significantly cuts the time needed for remote server backup.
• Multi-site, distributed enterprise application: If your organisation has a worldwide presence,
Opti-WAN can vastly improve WAN speed between offices.
Opti-WAN doesn’t work well for:
• Short-range Internet traffic. Opti-WAN works most efficiently for long-distance interstate
and international data traffic.
• Real-time applications such as VoIP and videoconferencing, which use RTP and UDP
rather than TCP.
Black Box Explains
TCP.
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is part of the TCP/IP communications protocols used on
the Internet. TCP operates mainly in Layer 4, the Transport Layer, of the OSI model, providing
end-to-end error checking of data transmission for reliable and sequential exchange
of data regardless of which systems are communicating or where they are on the network.
This layer is responsible for the mechanisms that establish, maintain, and terminate circuits,
as well as fault detection and flow control.
TCP ensures the ordered delivery of a stream of bytes by controlling segment size, flow
control, and data exchange rate. If IP packets are lost or delivered out of order, TCP requests
retransmission of lost packets and puts out-of-order packets back in order. Then TCP passes
the data to the application layer.
• Agentless and non-inline design provides rock-solid
security in an easy-to-deploy appliance.
• No infrastructure upgrade needed — works with existing switches.
• Protects your network from vulnerabilities firewalls can’t defend against. Find and fix holes before they’re exploited.
• Microsoft Active Directory integration allows credentialed users access to Veri-NAC devices. In addition, it allows Veri-NAC to report the
user ID along with the asset information such as MAC and IP address.
• Switch independent asset VLAN management means that a guest user can be granted/restricted access to a single VLAN regardless of
whose switches are deployed.
• Malware detection. Now Veri-NAC can detect malware by taking advantage of the fact that most malware tries to call home. With the
addition of a network tap near the firewall (sold separately), Veri-NAC keeps watch for outgoing network traffic going to known malware
repositories. Whenever Veri-NAC detects malware it can either block the offending PC out of the network or move it to a quarantine VLAN.
Control who can connect to your network. Unknown laptops and
unauthorised wireless access points are no longer a problem.
Discover and understand your network asset toplogy, complete with
documentation.
Protect your network — find and fix holes before they’re exploited.
Comply with requirements for GLBA, HIPAA, PCI, ISO 27001 and other
security and privacy standards.
Designed for simplicity
NAC (Network Access Control) solutions have been around for a while,
but have been slow to catch on because they’ve been expensive, timeconsuming
and often require extensive equipment upgrades. In short, they’re
just too complicated to be worthwhile.
Veri-NAC, on the other hand, is designed to provide maximum
security in a simple, agentless design that’s also very affordable. No need
for extensive training or dedicated personnel, no need to install software
agents, no need to upgrade switches - Veri-NAC is easy to integrate into
your network.
Only the trusted
Veri-NAC only lets computers and devices onto your network if they
comply with standards that you specify.
Every device has a unique, factory-installed MAC address. Veri-NAC
assembles a profile of each device, including the MAC addresses, and
only lets known, trusted devices on the network. It can even detect and
stop a machine trying to get in under a spoofed MAC address.
Veri-NAC also checks to make sure each connected machine complies
with your standards, including up-to-date operating system, patch
management and hardened configurations. If a machine isn’t up to
scratch, it’s user is locked out of the network except for the resources the
user needs to bring the computer into compliance.
Protects continuously
Veri-NAC continually scans your network, looking for unauthorised
devices attempting to obtain an IP address. In addition, you can schedule
the Veri-NAC to scan attached devices to search for security
vulnerabilities.
Detection and blocking feature
Quarantine or block malware-infected PCs — even zero-day malware
that would otherwise go unchecked by standard virus-protection
software.
18
No agents
Unlike many other NAC systems, Veri-NAC doesn’t require that you
install software agents on connected machines. This both simplifies
installation and improves security because agents are vulnerable to
hacking.
Cost effective
Not only is the up-front cost of Veri-NAC often lower than other
solutions, installation and ongoing maintenance costs are lower too.
Veri-NAC works with your existing network and legacy infrastructure,
so there’s no need for expensive upgrades. Plus, Veri-NAC requires no
formal training and minimal installation time, so even organisations with a
limited IT staff can easily add it to their network security plan without
straining resources.
Detailed reports
Veri-NAC displays network vulnerability information in colourful,
easy-to-interpret graphs and charts (see opposite). With one glance, you
can view the status of your network and each node within your network.
Veri-NAC tracks and logs common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs),
documenting end-user policies for regulatory compliance initiatives.
Fast, straightforward setup
This capable NAC system takes just minutes to install, Veri-NAC is a
turnkey network appliance — just plug it in, turn it on and follow the simple
on-screen instructions to configure it. There’s no need to upgrade your
hardware or operating systems. This simplified user interface has
practically no learning curve.
Veri-NAC offer two ways to detect the bad guys
Veri-NAC can do far more than just provide network access control. All
models except the base model support daily vulnerability and malware
updates over the Internet, which enable Veri-NAC to check for common
vulnerabilities and exposures plus malware trying to call home.
Daily vulnerability updates
Veri-NAC uses Daily Vulnerability Updates to track and log common
vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs). It alerts you whenever an attached device
has a problem that would leave it vulnerable to a hacker, so you can take
steps to rectify the situation.
Daily malware updates
Now Veri-NAC can detect previously undetectable malware by taking
advantage of the fact that most malware tries to “call home.” With the simple
addition of a Network Tap near the firewall, Veri-NAC keeps watch for
outgoing network traffic going to known malware repositories.
PoE PSE Media Converters not only enable
you to connect copper cables to long-distance
fibre data links, they also safely power compatible
PoE devices on the copper side. And now, with
the addition of Gigabit Ethernet, as well as singlestrand
fibre models, you have more versatility
than ever in installing PoE devices.
Fully compliant with the 802.3af Power over
Ethernet (PoE) standard, the converters function
as power source equipment (PSE) to provide
-48 VDC power via copper wiring to access
points, cameras, and similar devices in areas
without nearby power outlets.
For equipment protection, PoE PSE Media
Converters offer overcurrent and undercurrent
detection, as well as fault protection input and
power monitoring. They also have powered
device signature sensing to detect when
an 802.3af-compliant device is connected
downstream.
Plus, link-fault passthrough and far-end
fault detection features keep you from sending
data across invalid links by alerting you to
“silent failures” on the fibre side.
Single-strand models double your fibre
capacity by enabling you to both transmit and
receive data over a single strand of fibre rather
than the two strands required by most fibre
transmission methods. These converters compress
both data streams onto one fibre by using a
technique called Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(WDM). One unit transmits at 1550 nm and
receives at 1310 nm. The other unit transmits
at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm. The two
Wireless
Enterprise Wireless Solutions
Smart Path Enterprise Wireless System
Finally — the speed, range, security, adaptability, and manageability to replace wired
networks at an enterprise level.
• Fast, seamless throughput that rivals that of wired
networks and supports video and VoIP.
• Intelligent 802.11n wireless access points work together
to increase network efficiency.
• Transfer files at speeds up to 300 Mbps.
• Incorporates legacy 802.11b/g wireless devices with
no degradation in 802.11n performance.
• WARRANTY — 1 Year.
Unobtrusive Smart Path Access
Points blend with any decor.
Smart Path combines the stability, security
and speed of a wired network with the versatility
and adaptability of a wireless network. Unlike
ordinary wireless, in which access points function
as accessories to the wired network, Smart Path
is designed as an equal partner to the wired
network, making it a practical solution to
providing wireless at an enterprise level.
Smart architecture
Smart Path wireless access points manage
traffic intelligently and work together to provide
seamless, efficient throughput to end devices.
Early wired networks were built around
unmanaged hubs, which indiscriminately sent
packets to all connected nodes. Today’s networks
are built around smart switches, which actively
sort packets based on MAC address (Layer 2)
or IP address (Layer 3), then send the packets
only to where they’re needed — either to an
attached node or to another switch or router
for forwarding.
Today’s average wireless access point
functions much like a legacy network hub, acting
only as an interface to the wired network,
without making any decisions about where to
send packets.
Smart Path wireless access points, on the
other hand, behave more like a high-end switch,
sorting packets and sending them to where
they’re needed — broadcast wirelessly to a
nearby laptop, passed on to another access point
in a wireless mesh arrangement, or through the
wired network to another endpoint. Smart Path
can even track a user moving from one access
point to another, always providing the most
efficient throughput.
Because packets are actively switched, not
only is the network more efficient, but older
802.11a/b/g devices can share the network
without slowing down 802.11n connectivity.
Smart Path access points provide the services
you’d expect of a high-end switch, including
Layer 2 switching, VPN tunnels, and support
for QoS. Plus Smart Path includes robust security
and policy enforcement.
Access points go in easy
Smart Path Access Points are available in
a standard model for indoor use and a hardened
version for use outdoors in a sheltered location
or in industrial environments.
A Smart Path access point can be mounted
on the ceiling with ceiling-tile clips, wallmounted,
or simply placed on a desktop. A Kensington ®
security lock point enables you to secure it.
The access point supports 802.3af PoE, so you
can power it through the Ethernet port or plug it
into a nearby wall outlet.
Once plugged in, the access point automatically
joins the network and contacts the Smart Path
Network Manager.
Central management
The Smart Path Network Manager is a
centralised Web-based management system for
configuration, monitoring, policy creation, firmware
upgrades, and troubleshooting. This central
management system for Smart Path access points
enables you to manage your entire wireless
system — whether building-wide, campus-wide,
or global — from a single console.
The Smart Path Network Manager provides
centralised control without being actively involved
in passing traffic or making forwarding decisions.
The combination of autonomous access points
with centrally based management provides
maximum administrative control without creating
the traffic bottlenecks seen in some controllerbased
wireless solutions.
Smart Path Network Manager is an easyto-deploy,
cloud-based service — access points
automatically join the network and contact
Smart Path Network Manager. The service is
hosted within secure Tier IV SAS 70 Type II data
centres, with scheduled backups and disaster
recovery capabilities.
On-line Smart Path Network Manager makes
it easy to start small and add to your wireless
network as you grow. For larger wireless networks,
you may find it more cost effective to deploy your
own Smart Path Network Manager appliance.
The Black Box MXU9120M is a more flexible,
managed version of our MXU9020 LAN
Extender. With two 10/100/100Mbps Ethernet
ports and an SFP slot, you can select your
interface type and upgrade it later if needed.
The MXU9120M monitors link performance
and provides extensive statistics as well as alarms
and other performance monitoring parameters.
You can manage the unit using OAM, SNMP or
Telnet, either locally, or remotely over the WAN
connection. You can also restrict management
access on a per port basis if you enable VLAN
support to provide even greater security.
VLANs are supported in two modes.
Ordinarily VLAN frames are passed unmodified,
but when VLAN support is enabled, the device
supports VLAN-tag based switching, allowing
access to be controlled by VLAN IDs.
The MXU9120M ensures a reliable, high
availability link and easy troubleshooting by
supporting link state forwarding. A fault on the
serial port will automatically propagate to the
user port, thereby alerting the connected
equipment of the link status.
It also supports 802.3ah OAM, so the
Ethernet link can be managed and monitored
right up to the customer delivery point making it
perfect for carries and end users alike.
Digital Signage Platforms
iCOMPEL Integrated Hardware/Software Platform
Set up vibrant, real-time digital displays easily and
• An all-in-one, plug-and-display solution — sets up FAST.
• Works right out of the box with all software preinstalled and tested,
plus FREE updates and no ongoing SaaS or licensing fees — resulting
in a low cost of ownership.
• Scalable. Can be used standalone with one screen or
as networked devices for many digital signage screens.
• Controllable via a standard Web browser connection.
• Includes FREE professionally designed screen layouts.
• Enables you to customise screens with a mix of zones showing
video, still images, logos, text, HTML, and RSS and XML feeds.
Supports multiple video zones — show video side by side!
• WARRANTY — 1 Year.
Create, distribute, and manage digital signage content easily with
iCOMPEL digital signage appliances and players from Black Box.
Ideal for both large and small installations, iCOMPEL units work right
out of the box with all software preinstalled — and no recurring licensing
or SaaS fees to deal with later. And software updates are always free.
Extensive media format support.
Because the iCOMPEL units support many media formats, you can
combine video with scrolling text, photos, Flash, and Web content. In
addition to HTML and RSS media, they handle MPEG, AVI, QuickTime ® , and
PowerPoint ® media; JPEG, GIF, and TIFF images; and WAV and MP3 audio.
You can also order the iCOMPEL with a built-in video capture card for
set-top box connections. It’s ideal for displaying both stored video and live
video — even side by side in zones within the same screen!
Simple, browser-based control of signage.
Install the iCOMPEL appliances and players on a network and manage
them via a browser from any PC or Mac ® on a wide area network (WAN).
One iCOMPEL unit used as a publisher can send media over the network
to an iCOMPEL subscriber unit — even on the other side of the world.
Scaling from a standalone installation to a multichannel network with
many screens is simply a matter of adding more iCOMPEL units to your
standard IT network configuration.
Out-of-the-box, plug-and-display setup.
Setup is easy. Just connect the iCOMPEL appliance to your network and
to an LCD or other display device, power it up, and once it has an IP address
from the network, you can use a browser to access the network appliance
via a DHCP server. Fixed IP addresses can also be set. (For sample
applications, see the facing page.)
To upload media, drag and drop from your PC or Mac desktop or folder
to the iCOMPEL media folders on the appliance’s internal hard disk or use
the iCOMPEL user interface to browse for and upload the media files.
28
Six compelling reasons for iCOMPEL
• It gives you the flexibility to create attention-getting digital signage
without a lot of creative or technical know-how.
• It’s scalable from one to many digital signage displays.
• It’s an affordable, one-time investment with no ongoing fees.
• It keeps digital signage simple and it’s easy for beginners to master.
• It’s easy to integrate; it won‘t cause IT and security headaches.
• It’s from an industry leader with FREE 24/7 technical support who
can supply everything you need for end-to-end digital signage.
Includes FREE layouts.
Customise them how
you like!
Front view: ICOMP
Flexible presentation creation with included software.
The preloaded software includes a number of free professionally
designed layouts, so you can be up and running, displaying your choice
of content in a nicely laid-out screen within minutes.
Or you can create your own. The iCOMPEL’s intuitive layout and design
tool makes it easy to create and modify layouts. Adjust, resize, position, and
layer zones with a simple click and drag! You can also manually set pixel or
percentage measurements for very accurate alignment. It’s all up to you.
Custom fonts plus XML and RSS feeds.
You also have the flexibility to format text so it’s consistent with the look
and feel of your branding. That’s because the iCOMPEL supports importing
custom fonts. You can set their style, weight, and color, as well as control
their scroll speed across the screen.
Stream in a text crawl alerting visitors to important announcements,
display local weather via an XML feed, or provide the latest local or national
news headlines via subscriber RSS feeds. They’re all easy to set up using
the iCOMPEL content delivery interface screen.
Advanced tools for content scheduling and local updates.
All iCOMPEL units that work as a publisher can be used to control
multiple content channels. This way, you can deliver a high-impact display
to different audiences at various sites throughout the day.
Every zone in a display layout has its own playlist with its own media
files running according to its own preset schedule or in a continuous loop.
Different layouts can be scheduled to play at different times of the day.
Plus, all iCOMPEL units support general-purpose input/output (GPIO)
capabilities so content playing can be triggered (or halted) by signals
originating from external device inputs — from a motion sensor, for example.
Even better, you can also log into a screen-connected subscriber unit to
interrupt and update content on the fly. Great for real-time alerts!
• Supports high-resolution 1920 x 1200 VGA video as far as 609.6 m over CAT5 or
higher cable — no boosters or amplifiers required.
• Enables bidirectional communications with individual displays.
• Ideal for advanced digital signage and interactive display control.
• Built-in skew compensation control when skew-free UTP cabling isn’t used.
• Daisychainable, enabling you to reach up to 12 displays!
• WARRANTY — 1 Year.
With stereo audio or duplex RS-232 serial
communications support, our CAT5 Video, Stereo
Audio, & Pollable Data Distribution System gives
you more flexibility in your AV distribution
or interactive digital signage applications.
They simplify your extension installation
and save you money by eliminating the need
for additional CAT5 cables for stereo audio
and bidirectional serial data.
Along with VGA video, they distribute stereo
audio to remotely connected speakers and
addressable serial data for independent control of
one or more connected displays. They’re ideal for
controlling digital signage remotely — turn each
display on or off, check and update display
settings (brightness, contrast, etc.), and even
receive data from interactive devices such as touch
screens. Send RS-232 serial data from a media
player or other content server to multiple
daisychained displays and have them report back.
Choose your receiver(s) depending on
the distance you need and if you want skew
compensation. To eliminate skew on CATx cable,
simply turn a knob to adjust the skew delay.
The system also works with the accessories
below (although when used in a serial extension
application with the 1 x 9 Video Distribution Amp,
transmit-only serial data is supported).
