ServSwitch Secure KVM Switches with USB 

Combat security threats with these EAL4+ tested 

The ServSwitch Secure KVM Switches with 

USB are EAL4+ certified and TEMPEST approved 

(except SW2008A-USB-EAL and SW4008-USB- 

EAL). They surpass the security profiles of most 

other KVM switches. These new switches have 

been evaluated for Common Criteria Evaluation 

Assurance to Level 4+ (EAL4+). Common Criteria 

is an international standardised process for 

information technology security evaluation, 

validation, and certification. The Common Criteria 

scheme is supported by the National Security 

Agency through the National Information 

Assurance Program (NIAP). 

The ServSwitch Secure KVM Switches with 

USB provide control and separation of up to 

four PCs connected to secure and unsecure 

networks through just one keyboard, monitor, 

and mouse. Users can safely switch among as 

many as four computers operating at different 

classification levels without worry. 

Features include: 

• High port-to-port electrical isolation, which 

facilitates data separation (RED/BLACK). 

• The low radiated emissions profile meets 

the appropriate national requirements.

preventing access from one CPU or 

network to the others.

Threats/Solutions 

1. Prevent data leaking between 

ports and to the outside world. 

Threat: Microprocessor malfunction or 

unanticipated software bugs cause 

data to flow between ports. 

Solution: Unidirectional keyboard and mouse 

data flow is enforced by hardware “data 

diodes” so data isolation doesn’t rely on 

software integrity. This makes it impossible 

for the computer to send data along the 

keyboard and mouse signaling channel. This 

advanced design also ensures data isolation 

through hardware and prevents the keyboard 

and mouse interfaces from becoming covert 

computer-to-computer signaling channels 

because of software holes or unanticipated 

bugs. 

In addition, keyboard and mouse devices 

can only be enumerated at the keyboard and 

mouse ports. Any other USB peripherals, such 

as a USB thumb drive, will be inhibited from 

operating, preventing any uploading or 

downloading of data. 

Threat: Physical proximity between ports 

enables data leakage. 

Solution: Isolation is improved by placing 

the red and black ports at the opposite 

edges of the switch. 

Threat: Accidental port switching. 

Solution: Locked-down operation disables 

all keyboard hotkey and mouse switching 

functions in both software and hardware 

so that data corruption can’t inadvertently 

cause an unanticipated channel change. 

The only way to change the channel is 

with the front-panel keys. There is only one 

button per channel, so channel selection is 

clear. Colour-coded visual feedback confirms 

the channel selection. 

Threat: Signaling by shorting the power supply 

or loading the power. 

Solution: Each port is independently powered 

by its USB port. Shorting the power supply 

on one port will not cause the power on the 

other ports to be switched off. The shared 

keyboard, mouse, and monitor circuitry are 

powered by the power supply. The lack of a 

common power supply minimises electronic 

signaling. 

Threat: Detection of signals on one computer by 

monitoring for crosstalk (leakage) signals on 

another computer. 

Solution: Minimum crosstalk separation of 

60 dB provided between signals from one 

computer and input or I/O signals to another. 

There are no connections to sensitive 

analogue inputs, such as computer 

microphone ports. Microphone circuitry 

enables sensitive recording of small analogue 

signals. Even very low crosstalk levels could be 

recorded and act as a means by which a 

non-selected computer could read data being 

sent to another computer. 

Threat: Timing analysis attacks (looking at 

what happens on one port to determine 

data flow patterns on another). 

Solution: Only one computer is connected 

at a time to any shared circuitry. Links are 

unidirectional, preventing timing analysis. 

Threat: Electromagnetic emissions. 

Solution: Special low emissions cables are used 

to minimise radiated electromagnetic signal 

leakage. Filtered power connections minimise 

emissions down the power lines.

2. Prevent data from being stored 

in the device. 

Threat: Data transfer by means of common 

storage or common RAM. 

Solution: Shared circuitry, and the keyboard and 

mouse, are powered down at each channel 

change to clear all volatile memory of any 

previous connections. This erases the entire 

RAM, preventing residual data from remaining 

in the channel and being transferred to 

another computer. In addition, the USB host 

controller and the shared USB peripherals are 

also powered down, reset, and re-enumerated. 

This ensures no residual data transfer. 

3. Prevent electronic snooping. 

Threat: Subversive snooping by detecting 

electromagnetic radiation emitted from 

the equipment. 

Solution: The shielded metal case features 

double shielding in critical areas and a low 

emissions profile to thwart eavesdropping. 

Threat: Physically tampering with the switch. 

Solution: The switch is designed with 

tamperproof seals to be fitted over the 

countersunk screws.

The included Octoware control software 

enables you to monitor complete system setup 

via IP access, scan connected devices, edit user

ColdLogik Cabinets 

When cooling is everything. 


The Black Box range of ColdLogik cabinets 

feature a water cooling system that effectively 

reduces the heat generated by equipment at 

source without the usual risk of leaks. Water and 

electricity obviously do not go well together, and 

traditional systems do not offer any solution for 

the possibility of water leakage, an effect that 

would be devastating to a cabinet of live 

equipment. 

The ColdLogik range of cabinets employ a 

‘pull’ pump for the water cooling system, rather 

than the traditional ‘push’ pumping system. This 

ensures that if a leak occurred, air is sucked into 

the pipe work rather than water spilling out. This 

type of pump system is called a negative pressure 

system, as there is no ‘positive’ pressure forcing 

the water out of the pipe. Instead, the sucking 

effect of the pump pulls the water through the 

entire system, and leaks will only serve to add air 

into the flow. The air is removed from the pipes 

further down the chain. 

Due to the high efficiency of the cooling 

system, the water temperature can be much 

higher than the traditional 6°C. This means a 

smaller chiller size may be employed, reducing 

both capital expenditure and ongoing running 

costs, and increasing the availability of energy 

efficient ‘free cooling’. The water temperature 

may be comfortably set between 14°C and 22°C 

and yet still achieve the maximum heat 

dissipation of 45kW. The requirement for a 

smaller chiller reduces the typical energy 

consumption down by 35%, for a further 60% in 

energy savings. When these savings are added 

together, an energy saving of over 90% can be 

achieved. 

These energy savings can be equated directly 

to qualifying companies, as a recognised 

reduction in Carbon Footprint and therefore 

taxation benefits through the Carbon Trust and 

the Enhanced Capital Allowance Schemes 

initiatives. To add further savings, because the 

water temperature is higher than the traditional 

6°C, there is no need to purchase condensation 

prevention equipment as there is no chance of 

condensation forming at the water temperatures 

used. Capital expenditure is a major issue with 

any new build or new requirement, but for green 

field sites, the decision is now a no brainer. The 

Black Box range of ColdLogik cabinets requires 

no false floor for cooling ducts, and no hot aisle 

or cold aisle containment systems. They lose no 

‘U’ space from within the cabinet and require 

space at the side of the cabinet, thus offering the 

best solution for requirements where space is a 

real issue. This makes the range ideal for installing 

into cabinets that are already being used. With 

no demand for under floor space or over cabinet 

ducting, these cabinets provide the ideal solution 

at a cost effective price.

The Black Box range of intelligent power distribution units give you 

the ability to manage all your power requirements from the comfort of 

your desk. These PDUs have an IP browser interface built-in, allowing the 

user to switch on, switch off or power cycle each socket individually. 

Featuring both serial access as well as IP access, these PDUs give you the 

connectivity and control you need. But more than that, these PDUs also 

feature real time power usage display through both the built-in LCD 

screen via push buttons, and via the web browser interface. Information 

on voltage, current drawn etc is available on a per port, and a per PDU 

basis. This information can really improve capacity planning within both 

the individual cabinet, and throughout the entire data centre, simplifying 

the process of ensuring adequate power supply and also providing 

remote access. By employing a user-configurable time delay per port, a 

PDU can intelligently avoid brown-outs and black-outs. This feature can 

also be used to provide power sequencing to a cabinet or rack. 

Security 

To reassure the data centre manager, access to the web browser 

interface is protected by 256-bit AES encryption and strong passwords. 

These PDUs also support advanced external permission management by 

employing LDAP/S, RADIUS and Active Directory ® , where required. The 

browser interface supports HTTP, HTTPS, IPMI, SMASH-CLP, SH, Telnet 

and SNMP.

The AlertWerks ServSensor is the central hub of the AlertWerks 

environmental monitoring system. Connect it to your network, attach 

AlertWerks sensors, and you’re ready to remotely view the status of your 

data centres and other facilities. Check for temperature, humidity, and 

liquids. Know when server cabinet doors are open or closed and whether

ServSensor Contact 

Use the ServSensor Contact with equipment and devices that use dry

The Intelli-Pass Biometric Access Control networked model (SAC510NA) 

enables you to control and monitor hundreds or thousands of doors from 

a central location. 

Controller units attach to their site’s computer network or private 

network using standard IP addresses and communicate with central control 

stations with encrypted TCP/IP. User enrollment can occur at one central 

location, using the Intelli-Pass Management and Enrollment Software 

(SAC500MSA). The software enables you to easily manage and control 

multiple Intelli-Pass units installed on multiple doors. Instead of having to 

enroll users on each door separately, you can enroll once, then use that 

information for each relevant door. Additionally, the software makes the creation 

of user groups and door access zones a much easier process. You can 

set up and configure each networked unit, and upload fingerprint templates 

to any networked units to grant user access to them.

TCP. 

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is part of the TCP/IP communications protocols used on 

the Internet. TCP operates mainly in Layer 4, the Transport Layer, of the OSI model, providing 

end-to-end error checking of data transmission for reliable and sequential exchange 

of data regardless of which systems are communicating or where they are on the network. 

This layer is responsible for the mechanisms that establish, maintain, and terminate circuits, 

as well as fault detection and flow control. 

TCP ensures the ordered delivery of a stream of bytes by controlling segment size, flow 

control, and data exchange rate. If IP packets are lost or delivered out of order, TCP requests 

retransmission of lost packets and puts out-of-order packets back in order. Then TCP passes

fibre data links, they also safely power compatible 

PoE devices on the copper side. And now, with 

the addition of Gigabit Ethernet, as well as singlestrand 

fibre models, you have more versatility 

than ever in installing PoE devices. 

Fully compliant with the 802.3af Power over 

Ethernet (PoE) standard, the converters function 

as power source equipment (PSE) to provide 

-48 VDC power via copper wiring to access 

points, cameras, and similar devices in areas 

without nearby power outlets. 

For equipment protection, PoE PSE Media 

Converters offer overcurrent and undercurrent 

detection, as well as fault protection input and 

power monitoring. They also have powered 

device signature sensing to detect when 

an 802.3af-compliant device is connected 

downstream. 

Plus, link-fault passthrough and far-end 

fault detection features keep you from sending 

data across invalid links by alerting you to 

“silent failures” on the fibre side. 

Single-strand models double your fibre 

capacity by enabling you to both transmit and 

receive data over a single strand of fibre rather 

than the two strands required by most fibre 

transmission methods. These converters compress 

both data streams onto one fibre by using a 

technique called Wavelength Division Multiplexing 

(WDM). One unit transmits at 1550 nm and 

receives at 1310 nm. The other unit transmits 

at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm. The two

The Black Box MXU9120M is a more flexible, 

managed version of our MXU9020 LAN 

Extender. With two 10/100/100Mbps Ethernet 

ports and an SFP slot, you can select your 

interface type and upgrade it later if needed. 

The MXU9120M monitors link performance 

and provides extensive statistics as well as alarms 

and other performance monitoring parameters. 

You can manage the unit using OAM, SNMP or 

Telnet, either locally, or remotely over the WAN 

connection. You can also restrict management 

access on a per port basis if you enable VLAN 

support to provide even greater security. 

VLANs are supported in two modes. 

Ordinarily VLAN frames are passed unmodified, 

but when VLAN support is enabled, the device 

supports VLAN-tag based switching, allowing 

access to be controlled by VLAN IDs. 

The MXU9120M ensures a reliable, high 

availability link and easy troubleshooting by 

supporting link state forwarding. A fault on the 

serial port will automatically propagate to the 

user port, thereby alerting the connected 

equipment of the link status. 

It also supports 802.3ah OAM, so the 

Ethernet link can be managed and monitored 

right up to the customer delivery point making it 

perfect for carries and end users alike.
