The <strong>University</strong> Senate has delegated to each<br />

Dean the right to waive any academic regulation.<br />

The Deans’ rulings in academic matters are final<br />

unless overturned or modified on appeal to the<br />

Senate Review Board <strong>Academic</strong> (SRBA). SRBA<br />

is the final body to which <strong>student</strong>s may appeal<br />

certain rulings <strong>of</strong> Deans in academic matters, and<br />

its decisions are final.<br />

At least 1.0 course must be chosen<br />

from each <strong>of</strong> the three categories A, B,<br />

and C. Two <strong>of</strong> Categories A, B, and C<br />

are required in first year. Any outstanding<br />

breadth requirement not completed in first<br />

year must be completed prior to graduation. For<br />

First-Year Program<br />

Students in first-year programs must choose<br />

courses numbered 1000-1999. The 5.0 courses<br />

must include at least four different subjects<br />

with no more than 2.0 courses in one subject.<br />

Students are encouraged to take an essay course<br />

in first year. 1.0 course from two <strong>of</strong> Categories<br />

A, B, and C must be included in first year.<br />

Distance Studies occurs when learners are<br />

separated from the instructor and classmates,<br />

whether across the hall or across the province.<br />

Unlike the courses <strong>of</strong> the past that depended<br />

entirely on written communication through<br />

the mail, today’s distance courses may include<br />

multimedia materials and take advantage<br />

<strong>of</strong> web-based communication technologies.<br />

<strong>Western</strong>’s Distance Studies will let you pursue<br />

university studies if you cannot attend regular<br />

see which courses <strong>of</strong>fer distance options. The<br />

These are the procedures for appealing marks<br />

and other decisions related to individual courses,<br />

for example:<br />

• requests for extensions <strong>of</strong> deadlines for<br />

the submission <strong>of</strong> work<br />

• waiver <strong>of</strong> progression requirements<br />

• accuracy <strong>of</strong> grades on examinations or<br />

assignments<br />

• requests for make-ups or special exams<br />

• requests to have a particular grade<br />

reweighted on compassionate grounds<br />

• appeals against the conclusion that<br />

cheating or plagiarism took place<br />

• appeals against the sanction or penalty for<br />

cheating or plagiarism<br />
